Jeffery snorted. âYouâd better take care of yourself first.â
Soon they reached the barbecue stands by Lake H. Those stands offered all the ingredients and condiments, leaving the customers to do the barbecue themselves. Next to the pond, there was a forest. Customers could sit under the shade of the tree and chat.
They barbecued meat and vegetables, ordered a few cans of beer and sat on the grass inside the forest. They were chatting while they ate.
Jeffery said, âIâm afraid we wonât be able to be so idle in the future.â
Jolene sat down next to him, shooting him a look. âDonât be such a fool! Youâre someone whoâs going to do something big.â
âWhat kind of big thing do you want me to do?â asked Jeffery without taking his eyes off his sister.
Jolene replied without hesitation, âOf course, you will become a general to protect our country.â
Jeffery commented that she was too ambitious.
His sister wanted him to be a general.
Eddie was always silent. Jeffery kept chatting with Jolene. As Jolene talked, Eddie watched her.
She always seemed very animated. She was pure and extremely vivacious.
âIâll go get two more cans of beer.â Jeffery got up.
Finally, Eddie had a chance to chat with Jolene. âYouâre too close to Jeffery.â
Jolene propped her chin. âHeâs my big brother.â As if coming up with something, she said helplessly and cheerfully, âWhen I was in elementary school, I didnât have any friends in my class.â
Eddie asked curiously, âWhy not?â
Jolene curved her lips. âBecause I have a brother nicknamed âdevil.â When I was in second grade, my deskmate accidentally pushed me and I fell. I broke my knees and bled a little. When my brother found out, he hit my deskmate.â
âYour brother? He hit a kid?â Eddie gaped.
Jeffery really was someone with a sister complex.
âYes. From then on, everyone knew I had a violent brother in the senior class. No one dared lay a finger on me. Everyone was afraid of my brother.â
Eddie laughed.
Jolene leaned close to him and whispered, âLet me tell you in secret why I had chosen a school far from home. I was afraid he would hit my classmate again, so I couldnât make any friends.â
âHahaâ¦â Eddie burst out laughing.
âDonât tell my brother.â
Eddie teased her on purpose. âI wonât keep it a secret from him.â
Suddenly, Jolene covered her belly, looking quite uncomfortable. Eddie looked at her.
âIâm just kidding. I wonât tell your brother. You donât need to pretend your stomach hurts.â
Jolene covered her belly and didnât speak. She looked very long-suffering.
âDoes your stomach really hurt?â asked Eddie.
Jolene nodded.
âLetâs go get your brother. Letâs go home.â Eddie reached out to help her up. Then he found blood on his pants.
He wanted to remind her and took off his shirt. Jolene was surprised. Since it was quite warm. After taking off his shirt, he was naked.
âYou⦠What are you doing?â
Eddie handed her the T-shirt. Without looking at his body, he reminded her, âYour pantsâ¦â
âMy pants?â Jolene looked down at herself hesitantly. When she looked down, she found blood on her pants.
She blushed instantly. She lowered her head. It was her first rule.
âThere are too many people here. Iâm afraid the others will see it. Tie my shirt around my waist to hide it. Itâs pretty warm today anyway.â
Jolene hesitated a moment and put it on. âThank you very much.â
âItâs nothing.â Eddie smiled.
Jeffery took a swig of canned beer and returned. Seeing that Eddie was naked, he understood that he had done something to Jolene. He threw down the beer and was about to hit Eddie.
âJeffery, wait! Can you stop being so violent?â Jolene stopped him.
Jeffery grabbed Eddieâs neck and roared in anger, âWhat happened?â
Eddie whispered in his ear. âYour sisterâs on her period. She stained her pantsâ¦â
Jeffery looked at his sisterâs flushed face. He let go of Eddie. He said to Jolene, âLetâs get in the car and go back.â
When they returned, Mrs. Harris prepared the brown sugar soup for her daughter, let her shower and change clothes.
Jolene came downstairs after everything was done, and she was wearing the white dress. She wore her hair down. She was quite beautiful and slender. When she smiled, her eyes curved like a new moon, as if her charm emanated everywhere.
Eddie was stunned as he looked at her. His heart was hammering rapidly as if it would burst out of his chest.
Jeffery prodded him, âI know my sister is beautiful, can you avert your eyes from her?â
Eddie hastily lowered his head. He thought he was crazy-how could he fall in love with a teenage girl?
Still, he couldnât help but stare at her every time.
She was so beautiful when she smiled.
Mrs. Harris suggested taking pictures in the yard since Jeffery was leaving.
When they boarded the bus, Jolene was seeing them off. She watched them board the bus. She was only fifteen, but she had been lovely. As she stood on the side of the road, she was too attractive for others to look away.
Eddie felt as if something stung his heart. He was always thinking about her. He planned to pursue her after he retired from the army in a few years, when she had become an adult. He also purposely tested Jeffery and said half-jokingly, âJeffery, could you let your sister be my girlfriend in the future? Then weâd be closer.â
Jeffery thought he was just joking, so he also half-jokingly replied, âOf course. After you succeed in your career and become a man who deserves it, I will.â
Even though he was close to Eddie, he didnât like the way he looked. He never thought Eddie could ever deserve his sister.
In fact, in Jeffreyâs eyes, no one deserved his sister.
As Eddie lost himself in his memories, Jeffery also remembered what had happened that day.
Frowning, he said, âShe was only fifteen at the timeâ¦â.
Jeffery was extremely upset, as if his sister had been insulted by someone.
Eddie was still standing with his back to everyone.
âDad, youâre so disappointing!â Chloe couldnât accept that her father planned for her as much as he did for the good of the family, but she really wanted to fulfill his secret love.
The big father figure in her heart crumbled.
She cried and trotted out of the study.
Mrs. Chambers looked at her husband. âNo matter how remorseful or reluctant you are, it has been many years and you must let it go.â
After that, she walked out of the studio. As she passed Jeffery, she said, âAs the old saying goes, âItâs better to tear down ten temples than to wreck a marriageâ Youâre both crazy.â
Jeffery turned around. Although he had left Dolores behind, he still couldnât forgive Victoria. In his opinion, Victoria had ruined Joleneâs marriage.
The studio was silent. Jeffery had never expected his friend, whom he had known for decades, to secretly love Jolene.
He couldnât know what kind of feeling he had now. In any case, he felt rather uncomfortable.
âYou all said you loved her, what have you offered her? Out of interest, youâve forced her to marry a man she didnât love at all,â Eddie said wryly.
âWeâve done it for her own good.â Jeffery was still insisting that what they had done was right. âThe Lennon Family brat was a bastard son and his mother was a whore, how could he deserve Jolene?â he asked.
âJayden Nelson is tens of thousands of times better than the Lennon Family brat!â Although Jayden had betrayed his sister, Jeffery didnât think it was Jaydenâs fault at all. It must have been Victoria who had seduced him.
As a man, Jayden met all the requirements to be the brother-in-law in Jefferyâs mind: tall, strong, handsome, and capable. Jeffery could tell that Jayden really liked Jolene at that moment.
They were a perfect match.
They deserved each other very much.
Eddie snorted. âJust for your own selfishness. Donât make it so bombastic.â
âIf it were twenty years ago and I knew your thoughts, I definitely would have beaten the crap out of you!â said Jeffery fiercely.
