âMaâam?â The bodyguard whispered when he saw that Dolores wasnât moving.
Dolores waved her hand and walked towards Jessica.
The bodyguard followed close behind her.
âMom.â Some distance away, she whispered.
Jessicaâs body stiffened for a moment. She turned and looked at Dolores, who was standing not far away, forcing a smile. âLola, why are you here?â her face looked better than before.
âI should be the one to ask you, why are you wearing patient clothes in the hospital?
What happened to you?â Her voice was low and she was afraid to hear bad news.
Victoriaâs death had come as a great shock to her.
But with her children and Matthew at home, she couldnât show her sadness. She was afraid she would have a mental breakdown if anything happened to Jessica.
Jessica approached. Noticing that she was wearing baggy clothes and flat shoes, she smiled and said, âBoyce told me youâre pregnant?â
She was unwilling to cooperate in the treatment. She displayed a negative attitude and had no will to live. Boyce had no choice, so he told her that Dolores was pregnant. At that point, Boyce said, âShe has suffered a lot with you. If you donât care at all about her life or her death, then donât cooperate for treatment.â Then he left.
He recalled that he had followed her into a strange environment when she was ten years old. They had a hard time for a living and had huddled against each other for warmth. Her life then was both bitter and sweet.
Now that she was pregnant, she thought she should get along with Matthew, and thought he might have a chance to see her embrace her happiness. It would be nice to take care of her children for her if she could live longer.
So knowing that Dolores was pregnant, he began to actively show his cooperation for treatment.
After seeing her suffer, he hoped to see her happy.
He held Doloresâ hand. âIâm fine, donât worryâ¦â
Dolores shook his hand. âI want to hear the truth.â
He was obviously deliberately hiding it from her, that it was definitely not a minor illness.
Knowing she couldnât hide it, Jessica sighed deeply. âLetâs go back to the room.â
She stayed in the VIP single room and was quiet. There were too many people in the park.
Dolores didnât utter a word and agreed to his suggestion. He followed her to the hospital and to the room where she stayed. He walked in and opened the window.
There was a park between the ward and the building she was staying in earlier.
âHow long have you been here?â he asked her.
âA couple of days.â Jessica sat down next to the bed and greeted her, âCome here, Lola.â
Dolores went and sat down next to the bed. Jessica grabbed her and shook her hand. âIâm glad to hear youâre pregnant.â
Dolores gently lowered her gaze.
âMy illness is due to something hereditary, but donât worry. The doctor said that as long as I cooperate for treatment, there will be no problem for me to live a few more yearsâ¦â
Dolores hugged her tightly and choked suddenly. âWhy, donât you know that I will feel sadâ¦. â
Jessica patted her on the back. âDonât be sad, Lola. I will cooperate for the treatment and help you take care of your son in the future. Boyce said that as long as I cooperated for treatment, he would help me find someone to commute my sentence. After I receive treatment for a year and a half, and you give birth, I will be able to take care of your child like I did with Simona and Samuel.â
Dolores said nothing, she felt dejected. âMom, what do you think is the most painful thing in oneâs life?â
Jessica thought she was sad remembering the past, so she comforted her. âThe past is past, and you will live a happy life in the future.â
Dolores shook her head. âThe most painful thing in life is that you have no idea when your family is in front of you. Thatâs why itâs so unforgettable when you lose them.â
Jessicaâs body stiffened a little. âHave you, have you heard anything?â
The emotion Dolores dared not express at home revealed itself to Jessica undisguised at that moment.
She paid no attention to Jessicaâs words.
She was thinking about the tragedy between Victoria and Matthew.
Jessica sighed. âLola, Iâve always seen you as my own daughter. I couldnât help it then either. He was my fatherâs son before he married. It was embarrassing to talk about his motherâs identity and he is a son born of love. He had not shown his face in public. No one knew he was one of the Lennonsâ¦â
âMom, what are you talking about?â Dolores wiped the sweat from her face. She couldnât understand what he was saying. She reached out and touched Jessicaâs forehead, thinking maybe it was a relapse of psychosis.
Jessica pulled her hand away. âIâm fine. Didnât you say something about not knowing your family standing in front of you just now? Isnât knowing who your real birth parents are the most painful thing in life?â
Dolores sat motionless next to the bed. She had lost the ability to move. She stared at Jessica with glassy eyes. It took her a long time to find her voice. âBiological parents? Youâre my mother and Randolph is my father.â
âRandolph is not your father.â Even though Randolph was dead, her hatred for him didnât go away. She even thought he didnât deserve to be called father by Dolores.
Speaking of which, Jessica didnât want to hide it anymore. She took Doloresâ hand and said, âLola, your fatherâs name is Stanley Lennon. He is my brother from another mother who shares the same father with me. Only the family knows his identityâ¦â
Dolores stood up abruptly. âMom, what nonsense are you talking? I am your daughter. I havenât heard or seen any Stanley Lennon.â
She couldnât accept it right away.
âLola.â Jessica knew the truth was too sudden and she couldnât accept it for a moment. She couldnât help but sigh. She thought she had figured it out and wanted to tell him. Unexpectedly, however, she didnât know at all.
âYou must be tired. Get some rest. I have to get back. Samuel and Simona are still waiting for me.â Dolores refused to listen to her any longer and headed for the door.
Jessica didnât force her. âCome see me when you want to know. The necklace youâre wearing was left to you by your birth mother.â
Dolores paused slightly as she was holding the doorknob, then quickly opened the door and stepped out.
She walked quickly and the bodyguard followed her. âPlease slow down, maâam.â Dolores didnât seem to hear him. She just wanted to get out of there quickly.
She didnât want anything to do with Jessica.
As she got into the car, she said, âLetâs get out of here quickly.â
The chauffeur started the car and the bodyguard looked at her with concern. âAre you all right, maâam?â
Dolores reacted and shook her head. âIâm fine.â She seemed to have thought of something and added, âDonât tell anyone Iâve been out today, do you hear me?â
Both the chauffeur and the bodyguard agreed.
She was in a trance all the way, as if having an unreal dream.
When she returned to the villa, she went upstairs and headed for the bathroom. She soaked a face cloth, folded it and lay down on the couch, putting it on her forehead.
He must have been feverish until his brain went numb, so he had auditory hallucinations.
Stanley Lennon is her father! she scoffed. She had never even met him. How could that be?
