Dolores frowned-why was he clinging to her as he answered Helenâs call? Did he want her to witness their intimate conversation? She grew strangely melancholy. She struggled hard, but the more she struggled, the more Matthew clung to her and said softly, âDonât move.â
Dolores squirmed again, and Matthew pressed his lips to her ear and said in a warning tone, âBehave yourself while I answer a call, okay?â
Dolores calmed down and didnât dare move. Matthew smiled and was pleased with Doloresâ obedience. His thumb carefully brushed her clothes and pinched her waist.
The call was answered and a man said anxiously into the phone, âMr. Nelson, Miss White had an accident and is now in the hospital for emergency treatment.â
What? Helen had an accident?
Because she was close to him, Dolores also heard what the man said. She turned to look at Matthew and he too was looking at her in surprise, âWhen did this happen?â
âAn hour ago.â
Matthew let go of Dolores, stood up and grabbed his jacket. He walked a few steps and remembered that Dolores was there. He turned to her and said, âI have to go.â
Dolores looked at him, âGo ahead.â
She was his girlfriend and someone he liked. He was in danger and he had to go with her.
He pursed his lips and looked like he wanted to say something, but said nothing. He put on his jacket and continued the call as he walked out.
âAsk for a plane ticket to Country A, next flight.â
Dolores watched his back disappearing out the door and scoffed bitterly. This was her original arrangement, she was herself, and âtheyâ were âtheyâ.
She was the odd one out. They were clearly a loving couple and she was standing between them.
âWhy did Young Master Nelson leave in such a hurry?â asked Coral as she entered.
It was odd that he came back early and why didnât he spend some time nurturing their relationship? Was he always so busy? Coral didnât understand it at all and was very upset. Didnât he have enough money? Wasnât he worried about the importance of their marriage?
Dolores pursed her lips and smiled, âMiss White had an accident and heâs going to go take a look.â
Coralâs expression darkened. They had just had a few days of peace, what had that woman done?
âShe should get the doctor since she had an accident. Young Master Nelson is not a doctor, can he treat her?â Coral did not hide her displeasure with what had happened.
Dolores reached over to remove a blade from Coralâs shoulder and looked calmly at the workers trimming the nearby hedges, âCoral, havenât you noticed Iâm the odd one out? They are truly in love.â
What, Young Master Nelson was in love with her?
Coral was slightly annoyed with Dolores for not fighting for what was hers. Why was Dolores saying her husband was in love with another woman? Was something wrong with Dolores?
âYou were the one selected by Mrs. Nelson to be Young Masterâs wife. You are the one chosen by his parents. Who is Helen?â Coral looked sternly at Dolores, âYou allowed her to leave when she wanted to? Why canât you stand up for yourself?â
Dolores laughed bitterly inwardly, but held out her hand to the lovely old woman. Dolores knew she meant it for her and that she wanted things to be all right for her and Matthew. But Dolores wasnât sure what was going on between Matthew and her.
âCoral, youâre so good to me, what if I canât bear to leave?â
Coral was startled and looked at Dolores, âYouâll go?â
According to tradition, when a woman married a man, she became part of the family regardless of what happened. Since she was married to Matthew, she belonged to the Nelson family. Where did she intend to go?
In Coralâs eyes, Mrs. Nelson had chosen this daughter-in-law and was Matthewâs legal wife. She would not accept any of Matthewâs other wives.
In about ten days, she would be married to Matthew for a month. Then she would leave when that time came.
Dolores clung to Coral, âI want to go for a walk.â
âOkay, Iâll walk with you.â Coral was very familiar with the surroundings and they could have a good talk during the walk.
Dolores returned to her room immediately after dinner. She tossed and turned in bed and only fell asleep when she became very tired.
Country A.
A colleague, Bryan Eastwood, who came with Helen to Country A, was waiting for Matthew outside the airport. He rushed over to Matthew as soon as he saw him.
âMr. Nelson.â
âHow is he now?â asked Matthew as they walked.
âHis condition has stabilized and heâs out of danger. Heâs in the patient ward now butâ¦â Bryan paused as he said and didnât know how to continue.
Matthew said coldly, âGet out of here.â
Bryan looked at Matthew and then lowered his eyes, âMiss White had a miscarriageâ¦â
Matthew stopped walking and his eyes narrowed, âWhat did you say?â
His large presence was overwhelming, making oneâs breath feel stifled.
Bryan swallowed saliva, âMissâ¦. Miss White had a miscarriage due to the accident. The doctor said she was almost three months pregnant.â
It was as if Matthew had been struck by lightning. He clenched his fists in fury, but he didnât know why he was furious. He was walking too fast and Bryan had to break into a jog just to keep up with him.
When they were in the car, Bryan drove in silence. He didnât even dare to breathe audibly for fear of angering the man sitting in the back. They quickly arrived at the hospital.
Bryan stopped the car and ran around the car to open the door, but it was opened by Matthew. He quickly stepped aside. As Matthew got out of the car, he looked at his wristwatch to see the time. It was daytime there while it was nighttime at home.
He reached down, looked at Bryan and said, âLead the way.â
Bryan led Matthew to Helenâs room, âMiss White is inside.â
Matthew paused in front of the door for a couple of seconds and then pushed the door open to enter.
The room had a faint smell of disinfectant and Helen looked faint as she lay on the bed. When she saw Matthew, she tried to sit up, âMatthew, whyâ¦why are you here?â
Matthew rushed over to hold her, âDonât move as you are hurt.â
Helen leaned into his embrace, âHow do you know Iâm hurt?â
Bryan was scratching his head at the door and Helen understood and pointed to Bryan, âDid you tell Matthew?â
âWhen the doctor said your life was in danger, I took the initiative to inform Mr. Nelsonâ¦â
âMind your own business!â Helen threw the pillow at him angrily.
âBryan, leave us.â Matthew hugged the agitated Helen and stroked her back, âWhy did you keep this from me?â Matthew was very conflicted.
Helen lowered her head and tears began to well up, âHow could I tell? I was already two months pregnant when I found out and you were already married to Miss Flores at the time. I thought about giving you a surprise after you ended your relationship with Miss Flores but thenâ¦â
Helen wept bitterly as she said and hugged Matthew tightly, âMatthew, we have lost our son.â
She cried bitterly, âMatthew, Iâm so sorry I didnât protect our sonâ¦â Matthew frowned and felt terribly conflicted.
He was thrilled to have had a son. Every man longed to be a father. This woman had his child and yet he sent her here. If he had not sent her here, she would not have had that accident and her son would not have been lost.
He closed his eyes and said, âThis is not your fault.â
It was her mistake. He had also lost his mind for wanting to pursue a relationship with Doloresâ¦..
