Chapter 90: 89

BURNING LOVEWords: 22861

The grand dining room of the mansion buzzed with the gentle clatter of silverware and the soft murmur of conversation.

Friday evening had brought the entire family together for a much-needed dinner, a chance to celebrate Katia's return and reconnect after a long absence.

Seated at the other of the table were Reagan and Bertha, Lorelei's parents, their faces etched with a mixture of joy and apprehension. Beside Lorelei at the head of the table sat Katiandra, her posture exuding regality, yet her smile held a warmth that radiated throughout the room. In front of Lorelei, just after kayley was Benoit, her friend, his presence adding a touch of familiarity to the formal setting.

Alicia and Kayley, Katiandra's daughters, sat opposite them. Kayley was on their mother's left, while Alicia sat to Lorelei's left. Their eyes sparkled with curiositya as they stole glances at their mother; they hadn't seen her much in the past two weeks.

It was as if they had vanished from the mansion without a trace, the only evidence of their presence being the numerous guards stationed around the west and north wings of the huge house.

Throughout the dinner, Reagan couldn't help but steal furtive glances at Katiandra. He was beginning to understand his wife's reservations about the improbability of his theory. Her every movement seemed calculated yet executed with practiced grace.

Her laughter, when it came, was like a melody that filled the room, but her eyes, bright and intelligent, held a depth he couldn't quite fathom.

She had arrived and taken over the place as if she was always there, and everyone seemed perfectly content with this arrangement. She was undeniably in command of the situation.

Even though he couldn’t stop it, his wife had accepted the situation. Her daughter's happiness was all that mattered.

“I’ve never seen Lorelei this happy,” she had said just two hours earlier.

It was true. The young woman's face was completely transformed. Glowing was an understatement; she radiated on another level. Being around her was infectious, even his skepticism began to waver.

To be fair, he looked at the woman that was the cause of all that change with sort of distance, that put her on another level of thoughtfulness, that over built with the enigmatic stance of each of her gaze.

She knew what was going on, even had build her defense by holding his daughter away from them. Being an excellent lawyer,  Reagan knew her point was made, she knew it as he did.

She had prepared herself for war.

Taking some of his wine, he was pondering on the thought when theirs eyes met again there were a glint in katia crystal green orbs,  one he knew she had let appeared for him to see.

Though something else covered it.

It disappeared the moment she turned to looked at her daughter kayley.

"How are you doing love?" The smile that came from the young woman that started speaking with joy as none of them ever heard her speak made him rethink it all.

What Reagan felt then defied what he had seen in her eyes. Was it respect? Or should it bring more Defiance? It was a thought that sent a prickle of unease down his spine, a feeling he couldn't quite place.

Lorelei, very observant, noticed her father's scrutiny. A shadow of concern crossed her face, a concern Katia immediately picked up on.

With a playful smile directed at Lorelei, Katia leaned in and whispered something that made Lorelei erupt into laughter.

"No, I will not have it tonight. No pastas."

The sound, genuine and joyous, filled the room and momentarily disarmed Reagan.

As Lorelei's laughter subsided, Katia turned to her with a teasing glint in her eyes they had eaten pastas almost everyday for the last week. It had became a joke between them, for tonight none of it was allowed on the table.

To be fair, he regarded the woman who was the catalyst for all this change with a certain detachment, placing her on a pedestal of contemplation, an enigmatic aura surrounding her every gaze.

She really had prepared for battle. Sipping his wine, he was lost in thought when their eyes met yet again, like it could not stop to gravitate on the same point.

A glint flashed in Katia’s crystal green orbs, a deliberate invitation for his scrutiny. Yet, something else masked that spark. It vanished the moment she turned to answer her daughter, Kayley, who had just finished the resume of her life, since she came here.

"That is wonderful. How are you doing at work? Dr Killian told me you rock it there?" The smile that accompanied her words was as radiant as the young woman herself, whose voice held a newfound confidence under the love and interest her mother was showing her.

Even that was calculated Reagan thought, since she strategically chose to speak with the older sister before Alicia, the little sister showing what Porisian thought of Alicia being the only one she care for was not true.

Here she was clearly showing kayley mattered too. Personally she did not wanted to make steps backwards, Alicia who understood turned to Lorelei's side immediately speaking her head off in a lower voice.

What Reagan felt then seeing all of that defied the emotions he had previously ascribed to her. Was it respect? Yes, a lot of it.  A shiver of unease ran down his spine, a sensation he couldn't quite pinpoint.

Lorelei, not obvious of what was happening , kept a hold of her father's scrutiny of her soulmate. A shadow of concern crossed her  glowing face in a micro expression, which immediately was picked on by katiandra.

With a playful smile directed at Lorelei, the Queen leaned in and with the lame excuse of telling her another thing she had her palm caressing her thigh slowly then meeting her gaze she leaned into her side to say.

"You are very beautiful tonight. I love you."

Feeling emotional hearing that Lorelei made a face that had Kayley playfully rolling her eyes at them though with a happy smile, while Benoit and Alicia clapped their hands up then on the table making everything tremble on it, like they were in an arena. Unable to frown at them, Katiandra's eyes diverted to them in a false furry

"Where do you think you are dear." She voiced exasperation in her voice, only to be met with more clapping this time even Kayley was involved.

Being the courageous one Benoit who had bonded with Katiandra's one week ago after the had accidentally met in the garden, looked right at her his beaming smile on.

" We just love to see people in love your magic majesty. You look like a big teddy bear by the way." At that everyone started laughing, even Katiandra's who could not denied it.

The genuine and joyous sound that came out of Lorelei's after that filled the room, a sound all of them loved to hear. As her laughter subsided, Katiandra turned to her with a teasing glint in her eyes.

To stop all the fuss on here being in love, she leaned her head to the side a soft smile on her lips.

"Lorelei, my dear," Katiandra said, her voice dripping with mock seriousness, her gaze sweeping the opulent dining room, its walls adorned with gilded mirrors and finest oil paintings.

"You simply must tell your father about the time you snuck out of the museum to attend that infamous bakery competition!"

Lorelei's eyes widened in complete shock. "Katia!" she exclaimed, a playful blush creeping up her cheeks. "You wouldn't bring it up here!" The crystal chandelier above cast an ethereal glow on her face, accentuating her features.

They had chose to dine in the bigger dining room that was designed in a castle way allowing modernity to couple with all pertaining to royalty.

Lorelei had never like to eat in the room because it was the only one of the mansion that automatically brought the reality of her soulmate to her mind. But for this occasions she had been the one requesting the dinner to be held there.

The room erupted in laughter, even Reagan, momentarily caught off guard by the unexpected banter, found himself smiling. The sound of their merriment echoed through the large space.

It was a strategic move on Katia's part, a calculated act of lightheartedness aimed at disarming his negativity. It seemed to work.

"A Bakery? What for?" Benoit's genuine interest was palpable, his eyes wide with curiosity. The soft glow of the candlelight illuminated his features, highlighting his intense focus on Lorelei.

"Seriously, wait!" Alicia voice cutting whatever her friend tried to say, "Why do I know nothing about it? I thought we were best friends? A bakery? How? Why?" Lorelei's head shook from side to side, a playful exasperation evident in her tone. The intricate silver cutlery on the table seemed to blur in her peripheral vision as she focused on her family, she could only lift her hands at Alicia shocked expression.

Completely caught off guard by everyone's interest, Lorelei's eyes sent playful daggers at her soulmate after, urging her by her body language to continue with her revelations.

"Okay, you all know how good she can be, with herself. She had made a promise to be there. It was almost traumatizing to not know where she was, a good thing Sloan didn't leave her side. She even volunteered for all the day." The room, with its high ceilings and ornate moldings, seemed to shrink as the tension dissipated with each shared joke and heartfelt story.

Ten minutes after the dinner was off, they had all migrated in the living room to relax when the Queen decided to take that moment with her daughters who have already left for the terrace.

"I will be with the girls." A suave voice said behind Lorelei's head, while soft hands rolled on her shoulders from behind, their warmth comforting to her soul.

She was discussing with Benoit about his involvement in the restaurant.

Looking up, she almost kissed Katiandra, their faces inches apart. The intimate atmosphere created a sense of seclusion in the grand and comfortable  room.

"Okay, I have to talk with Dad afterwards."

"Hmm, I love you." With a tender kiss at the corner of the young woman's lips, the older woman left them, her silhouette disappearing into the hallway. The lingering scent of her perfume filled the air.

"Love you," Lorelei returned, smiling fondly. She turned halfway to watch her depart, her eyes tracing the graceful sway of her hips. A sense of awe washed over her as she admired the woman she loved.

The moment she disappeared, Lorelei's eyes met Benoit's amused gaze. "What?" she asked, a playful challenge in her voice.

"Nothing. I mean, you’re a completely different person. Like, seriously, to score that woman?! Come on, you have to teach me because there's no hope for me. How did you do that?" Lorelei laughed earnestly, shaking her head despite her happiness.

"She’s out of humans top league. It's not like you're not amazing yourself. It is not fair. You two are really good together, you know. I’m so happy for both of you, you have no idea. You deserve to be happy too."

Lorelei’s gaze met Benoit’s for a moment, her smile still lingering. He was more than a friend; he was the brother she never had. They stood in silence for a moment before simultaneously rising to embrace.

"I don’t want to be scalped. She looks like the jealous type." Holding her on his torso the French man says, Lorelei could hear a huge smile on his face.

"Moron, she’ll never harm her in-law. She knows you’re my brother. So use it as much as you want with her." Benoit squeezed her tighter, relishing the feeling of belonging. He knew these words meant more to Lorelei than just mere comfort.

"Thank you for taking me in. I’ll never let you down." Sinking in the embrace he murmured resting his face in her neck like child, it was not a joke how he looked like a teenager sometimes, his small body gave that vibe.

"Don’t say that, sometimes family does. But we always find a way out. Never thought I could eject you from my life because you weren’t my perfect idea of a brother. We’ve got each other’s backs."

Breathing in her scent Benoit nodded doing his best to not cry. The way she smelt had always felt like home for him, she was the longest person than has shown him love in this life, when he felt lost he knew he could just run to her and find her there like a rock.

"That we do, Lo. But let me be on my best behavior. I really believe your wife won’t think the same."

Lorelei playfully pinched his cheeks and messed up his hair. "Nah, she’ll come around. Give her time to focus on other things than me. She started with her daughters after it will be you. Do not play the surprise one then. Why the big eyes, dear? I required a lot of attention."

They both laughed, the warmth of their friendship filling the intimate space of the grand living room. The soft glow of the chandelier light dancing shadows on the walls as they talked, their laughter echoing through the room. Lorelei gave in the joy of their moment, her role as the protective older sister becoming increasingly natural.

Later that evening, after the rest of the family had retired, Katia retreated to their bedroom, leaving Lorelei to find Reagan alone in the library, a solitary figure lost in contemplation.

A half-empty glass of brandy swirled idly in his hand, casting dancing reflections on the polished mahogany of the desk. He looked up as she entered, his face etched with a mixture of weariness and concern.

"Can I talk to you, Father?" Lorelei asked, her voice soft but carrying a determined edge.

Reagan nodded, gesturing for her to sit beside him. The formality of addressing him as 'Father' instead of the more familiar 'Dad' was a clear indication of the seriousness of the conversation.

Lorelei sank into the plush armchair, her gaze unwavering as she met her father's. "Father, I know you have reservations about Katia and me.

A flicker of discomfort crossed Reagan's face, a subtle reaction that didn't escape Lorelei's notice. He quickly masked it, but the brief flash of disapproval was undeniable.

"Reservations? Not at all, Lorelei. I'm just..." He trailed off, his grip tightening around the brandy glass.

"Concerned?" Lorelei finished his sentence, her voice steady.

Reagan sighed, the weight of his worries evident in the lines etched around his eyes. "Yes, for everything" he admitted, his voice laced with sincerity. "Also about you, Lorelei... I want you to be happy, to have kids, but..."

"But you don't understand?" Lorelei interrupted, her voice rising slightly with frustration.

Reagan leaned forward, his expression earnest. "Perhaps not entirely," he conceded. "The political implications are significant, what..""

Lorelei's voice softened. "Father, Katia makes me happy. She sees me, not just the genius the world expects me to be. She gives my life meaning beyond all this Anãda thing. We have a connection, a soul-deep bond that transcends titles and politics, I know that, you think... with pragmatism here. But life is more than that. My life is more than that father. You know that no one should condemn me to life a tasteless life when I bring in do much for the world. I refuse to let what it says of my relationship determine who I should love. People are so quick to chant religious formula bringing in the Christ  teaching -

' love is the accomplishment of the law' or ' do not judge'- butt yet they are doing it in a daily basis."

Bitterly she looked up to meet her father contrite facew he like to think he was a Christian, but most of those things he thought lenient written in the Bible he had always been afraid could not protect people in real life will sometimes reproach his wife to be too good. Once years ago, he told her she was the reason why their daughter was overly good with people for her own sake.

But lately he had witnessed spirituality like never before, he knew Lorelei was protected, he understood signs he had witnessed before that mean nothing to him, but now had more resonance, like the light that seemed to shine around her or the warmth that subside where she always is like a presence that force people around here to recover from any form of negativity.

Reagan listened intently, the fire crackling nearby casting flickering shadows on his face. A battle raged within him - the protective father against the pragmatism the society obliged to take in consideration.

The love and determination in Lorelei's eyes began to chip away at his resistance.

"You live by Christ teaching, why don't you believe in them dad?"

Touched by her reasoning and the way she looked at him right there her eyes full with love and understanding of his worries urging him to trust the Christ his so quickly said loved without abiding on his terms.

"I am save you know? I love her, that love is sane, it is blessed whatsoever people think. They should mind their own lives and relationship with the divine. I refuse for you to be of that part..."

Breathing out aware she was giving him words of wisdom, he nodded understanding.

"Perhaps," he said finally, his voice filled with a mixture of hope and resignation. "Perhaps I need to give her a chance. I, you are right, I am not good with those rules. I, I try..."

A genuine smile spread across Lorelei's face, her eyes sparkling with gratitude.

"Thank you, daddy,"

she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. She hesitated, considering whether to mention the topic of grandchildren, but decided against it. The time for that conversation hadn't arrived yet. For now, she focused on the progress they had made.

"That's all I ask," she said, her smile widening. The evening ending on a note of tentative understanding, a fragile bridge built between  them pleased the young woman who leaned back on her seat breathing freely,  she had come fearing a harder confrontation which have been avoid.

The future remained uncertain, but for now, hope illuminated their relationship, ignited by their shared vulnerability.

To say she felt better was lighter, smiling Lorelei nodded leaning her head to the side, just looking at him for a while before pulling herself up.

"Good night, Daddy. I love you, you know, God allow human to find him by many trials. Trying is all is important." Lorelei whispered, her voice soft and filled with affection.

Walking towards him, she enveloped him in a warm embrace, her arms finding comfort around his broad shoulders. Reagan reciprocated, holding her tightly, his eyes closed, savoring the moment.

"I forget sometimes how wise my daughter is. Though I have one request." He mumbled in her ear as he hold her against his chest.

The familiar warmth of her body against his brought a surge of contentment. It was a profound shift that showed she was angry with him before; the fact that she no longer addressed him as 'Father' put a smile on his face.

'Daddy' was her term of endearment, a proof that support their bond. He understood the depth of her affection for her partner, the unspoken language between them now showing they were on good terms.

"Even if you are angry with me, always call me Dad. I love you too much to make anything that could harm you. We will speak about it and find a solution. You are baby."

Nodding her head on his shoulder she sighed softly happy to hear him say those things.

"Never forget that I love you more, baby. I love you more," he responded, his voice filled with tenderness as their eyes met. With a playful nudge to her nose, a gesture as familiar as the rhythm of his heartbeat, he released her, his gaze lingering on her face.

The crystalline laughter that escaped her lips right  away echoed in his mind,  contrasting completely with the tense atmosphere that had prevailed minutes ago.

The argumentative Reagan had prepared was momentarily eclipsed by a man deeply touched by his daughter's love. His wife was right; their daughter was their greatest treasure, a gift from the universe.

Standing as judge of who she could love will profit no one, creating unnecessary pain, she had already gone through much without their input, letting her go he kept his gaze on her back until she turned to send him a kiss in the air like the child she had always been for him. A smile on, he waited for the door to close before drinking all the wine in his glass.

Closing the door behind her, Lorelei's eager feet led her to her bedroom where she had to stop in front of the closed door, eyes focused on the figure standing before it.

"Sloan! Really my dear, for God love... do me a favor dear, go find your bed please... Huh huh! It was not a request, this is an order. Use whatever technology you want but I do not want you standing at my door like you have nothing better to do with your life," she announced, her voice laced with playful authority.

Sloan, a tall, imposing figure, stood motionless for a moment, his face a mask of amusement. "But, this is my work," he replied, his voice low and steady.

"Hmmm, I respect that, but it’s a waste of time to be standing here all day. You get my point. This house is already a fortress by itself. If you continue like that, there will never be a woman in your life. A real waste," Lorelei retorted, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

The slender bodyguard couldn't help but smile at his boss's candidness. "Come on, at least take a break. We will be on our best behavior. Go," she said almost pushing him away with the little success he allowed her.

" Your choice boss. "

His voice filled with resignation he nodded. With a salute, Sloan turned and left, a wry smile playing on his lips as he contemplated his boss's words.

Satisfied that she was alone, Lorelei slipped into the bedroom, her movements fluid and graceful. Katia was seated on the edge of the bed, her attention focused on the tablet, a digital  guarding their privacy, she had the power to see everything with it.

"You are dangerous for your own security," the older woman teased, her voice soft but carrying a hint of concern for what she just witnessed. She had gathered Lorelei's security details were never near her inside of the house which was a real concern for her after what had happened to Arthur.

Katia glanced up, a playful smirk curving her lips feeling exhilarated to be in the same room as her soulmate,

'it will  never get old' she thought.

While her eyes roamed the fitted body, her mind was still pinned on the matter at hand.

She knew better than to underestimate the security measures surrounding their home but she like it too when someone was at hand.

Lorelei, ignoring the subtle warning, kicked off her shoes and launched herself onto the bed, straddling Katia's thighs. With a swift movement, her lips captured the Queen's in a passionate kiss.

Katiandra's initial surprise quickly melted away, replaced by a desire as intense as Lorelei's. She set aside the tablet promising herself it was not over, her fingers finding their way into Lorelei's hair as she deepened the kiss. A low moan escaped her lips, a sound that was both surrender and invitation.
