A gentle breeze blew by, causing the lotus flowers to sway softly in the wind.
Charlotte Lane looked at Wilton Edwards and asked, âUncle Edwards, is something the matter?â
Wilton shook his head, then walked over to the edge of the lotus pond and gazed at the distant lotus flowers, saying, âLady, time flies, doesnât it?â
Charlotte looked at him, her hands gripping the swingâs rope tightening involuntarily: âYes.â
âYoung Master has grown up so quickly,â Wilton reminisced.
Charlotte remained silent.
Wilton was silent for a while before speaking again, âLady, have I ever told you how I came to be by Edward Kirstenâs side?â
Charlotteâs thumb gently brushed the swingâs rope as she softly responded, âMm.â
âRobert Kirsten and I were originally from an orphanage. When we were ten, we were chosen by Michael Kirsten, Edward Kirstenâs father, to participate in a training program. Over thirty of us were training together, eating and sleeping in the same place,â Wilton slowly recounted. âIn the orphanage, we often went hungry, but at the training camp, we didnât have to worry about being fed or clothed. Those days were the happiest times for Robert and me.â
âWhat happened after that?â Charlotte asked.
âWe continued that life for eight years,â Wilton said. âAfter that, we were taken to a martial arts arena we had never been to before. Michael Kirsten, several years older than me at the time, said that out of the thirty of us, he only needed five. Whoever survived until the end was up to their own abilities. That was the first time I killed to stay alive â my victims were the friends who had been by my side for eight years.â
Charlotte looked at him: âFortunately for you, both you and Robert Kirsten survived.â
âYes,â Wilton calmly said, âAfter that, we became Michael Kirstenâs assassins.â
âUncle Edwards, you donât seem like an assassin,â Charlotte remarked. âYou have too many personal feelings.â
âLady, you are right. I have always longed for a peaceful and stable life,â Wilton said with a faint smile. âBefore Michael Kirsten passed away, his orders were for us to take care of and protect Henry Kirsten and Lady Kirsten, to follow their commands.â
âRobert Kirsten and I grew up together, and he knows me well. He took over my share of the tasks, allowing me to stay at home and take care of Henry Kirsten and Lady Kirsten,â Wilton continued after a pause. âBut Young Master Henry Kirsten has been distant since childhood, both towards his father and us. He doesnât need anyoneâs care. He knows what he wants and what he needs to do. All he needs are obedient subordinates. So my main task is to take care of Lady Kirsten.â
âSo you have deep feelings for Lady Kirsten,â Charlotte remarked. âYou treat her like your own daughter.â
âYes.â
âWhat about Charles Amos then?â Charlotte asked. âDo you love him too because of her?â
âInitially, it was because Lady Kirsten gave her life for him, and he is her continuation,â Wiltonâs voice grew slightly hoarse. âBut later on⦠I really came to love him.â
âI know,â Charlotte said softly. âThatâs why⦠I never worried that you would hurt Charles.â
âSo⦠thatâs also why you let me stay with Young Master Charles after you returned to the city,â Wilton looked at Charlotte.
Charlotte looked at him but suddenly couldnât speak.
âI wonât hurt you either,â Wilton said as he watched her.
Charlotte looked at him and whispered, âBut the person you want to harm is the one I love most.â
Wilton was taken aback for a moment before lowering his head and smiling, âLady, youâve always been like this, always putting others before yourself.â
Charlotteâs lips reddened, and her expression turned cold. She continued to look at Wilton before asking, âWhy would you do this?â
âLady, I am an assassin, and I have been loyal to my master my entire life,â Wilton replied with the same calm, gentle tone as before. âUnless I die.â
âSo⦠when you brought Charles out of Continent A, you were following Edward Kirstenâs orders?â Charlotte asked coldly.
âYes,â Wilton said. âEver since you first tried to leave, Henry Kirsten told me that you were too smart for him to keep by his side, and he was afraid he would lose you one day. If that day ever came, my task would be to follow you, take care of you, protect you, and listen to you. Even if it meant becoming enemies with Henry Kirsten without a specific order.â
âWhat is a specific order?â Charlotte asked.
âHenry Kirsten would send someone to contact me and give me orders,â Wilton explained. âI havenât been in touch with him for many years, and I donât know anything about his situation. So my task was to follow your orders completely. But a while ago, Henry Kirsten sent someone to contact me.â
âSo you leaked our whereabouts, our trip to Mountain Sea Continent,â Charlotteâs voice grew colder.
âYes. Lady, Iâm sorry,â Wiltonâs eyes reddened. âBut I never intended to hurt you, and Henry Kirsten wouldnât hurt you either. He just wants you to return.â
âReally?â Charlotte Lane looked at him, âDo you know that? Alice Eugene defied our orders and tried to kill me.â
Wilton Edwardsâ pupils trembled: âWhat?â
âHowever, itâs not a big deal. I killed her.â
Wilton Edwards paused again.
Charlotte Lane observed his reaction, realizing that he really didnât know.
It looked like Edward Kirsten had indeed only kept in touch with him.
So it was pointless to ask any further questions.
âWilton Edwards, your understanding of me is too one-sided,â Charlotte Lane said, âI wonât just kill Alice Eugene, if I go back, I will kill Edward Kirsten.â
âLadyâ¦â
Charlotte Lane shifted her gaze and looked at Lotus Pond, âWhy tell me all this voluntarily?â
âDidnât Lady already guess? The Clark Family sent someone to protect the Young Master and did not allow me to take him out alone. While Lady knew but didnât say anything, you had someone monitor my whereabouts.â Wilton Edwards paused for a moment, âThe Clark Family has always been good to me, and Third Master has given me enough respect. After leaking your whereabouts, I felt extremely guilty. However⦠I had to do it. I cannot betray Henry Kirsten.â
Everyone has their own master.
Charlotte Lane did not respond.
âIt is even more torturous for me if Lady does not expose the truth. Rather than this, itâs better to tell everything.â After saying this, Wilton Edwards pressed his eyes, âLady is doing this because there is no direct evidence and wanted to force me to confess.â
âDo you know the consequences of saying this?â Charlotte Lane asked.
âWill Lady take my life?â Wilton Edwards looked at her.
Charlotte Lane looked back at him, and the two stared at each other for a long while. In the end, Charlotte Lane averted her gaze and plucked a lotus beside her.
For the past eleven years, Wilton Edwards had been like a father to her.
She respected, cherished, and trusted him.
Taking his life was something she couldnât bear to do.
âLast year on M Continentâs Koymoon Island, I met Robert Kirsten.â She said quietly.
Wilton Edwardsâ whole body tensed up again: âHeâ¦â
âHeâs always wanted to see you, but I didnât allow it,â Charlotte Lane said, âIt seems Iâve hindered your reunion.â
âLady is also protecting me.â Wilton Edwards asked, âHow is he now?â
âIn M Continent.â Charlotte Lane said, âI had someone break his legs.â
Wilton Edwardsâ lips trembled, and his breathing quickened.
âYou go take care of him, perhaps he can live a few more years.â Charlotte Laneâs voice was cold to the extreme, ruthless and numb.
Wilton Edwards gazed at her blankly.
âSay goodbye to Henry Horton today.â Charlotte Lane got up from the swing, âI will have someone send you away tomorrow.â
Wilton Edwards stood in place without a word.
âItâs up to you how you say it to him.â Charlotte Lane said, âHeâs grown up now, he should learn to face separation.â
After saying this, Charlotte Lane left.
Wilton Edwards stood there for a long time before he left.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
