Kevin Clark had no choice but to sit down on a chair nearby.
Since he was small and afraid of hurting Charlotte Lane, he would find a place to sit down and hold her in his arms whenever she wanted him to hold her.
Old Master Lane placed little Lila in his arms. She immediately grabbed onto Kevinâs clothes, lying in his arms, staring at him with big eyes and smiling.
âLila really likes Arthur,â said Tom Wayne with a smile.
âYes, she always wants him to hold her when she sees him.â Old Master Lane laughed. âMaybe itâs their destined fate.â
Tom Wayne laughed.
As Kevin listened to their conversation, he looked down at the little thing in his arms: What kind of destined fate was this? A fate destined to babysit?
Thinking about it, Kevinâs mind began to wander.
Just at that moment, the little one in his arms suddenly nibbled on his face.
Old Master Lane, Tom Wayne, and William Lane were all watching, making them witnesses to the scene.
Kevin was startled and shook involuntarily.
Charlotte let go of him, smiling happily and her eyes full of innocence.
As for Kevin⦠his face covered in drool.
Tom Wayne⦠watched Kevinâs stunned expression and laughed so hard he couldnât stand up straight.
Kevin was in a mess in the banquet hall: ââ¦â¦â
Seeing Tom Wayne laugh, Old Master Lane also laughed after a while.
William Lane, however, stared with a darkened face, full of resentment.
Everyone thought Charlotte had given him a peck on the cheek, but only Kevin knew that he had been nibbled on.
To be more precise, she seemed to have sucked on his face. Her small teeth even touched his skin, causing a little pain.
âElder Brother,â Little Lila called.
William Lane handed Kevin a tissue paper, held Charlotteâs little hand, wiped the saliva from her mouth saying, âThis is Uncle, I am your elder brother.â
âElder Brother,â Little Lila still called.
William Lane: ââ¦Uncle.â
âElder Brother,â Little Lila insisted.
William Lane: ââ¦â¦â
â¦
Lila loved to stick to Kevin. Whenever he visited the Lane Family, she would ask him to hold her. Sometimes, he would hold her for a long time.
There were times when Little Lila would fall asleep in his arms.
Kevin didnât like children, but when it came to Lilaâ¦he would do almost anything for her.
It wasnât the same treatment he gave to his own sister, Elina Clark. As for Elina, he could express his thoughts freely and do what he wanted.
But he wouldnât do that with Lila.
Because his father, Arthur North, told him that Old Master Lane was his benefactor, and he should respect and care for his family.
So, he also tried his best to be good to Lila.
And so, day after dayâ¦
Lila grew up slowly and became more and more beautiful.
Both Kevin and William developed quickly, taller than their peers, and becoming increasingly handsome.
After starting school, Kevinâs visits to the Lane Family became less frequent.
However, every time he came, Lila would come to see him and ask him to hold her.
The little girl, who initially called him âElder Brother,â started to call him âBrother Arthur.â
Kevin hadnât visited the Lane Family for a week, and the three-year-old Lila thought it had been a long time since she had last seen him. So, one afternoon when she and William were playing on the swing in the courtyard, she asked him, âElder Brother, I havenât seen Brother Arthur for a long time.â
âItâs because of Third Uncle.â Williamâs voice was still childlike.
âNo, itâs Brother Arthur.â Lila corrected in her sweet and milky voice.
William picked up a strawberry from a round table nearby and fed it to Lila, âWhy do you like him so much?â
âYes.â Charlotte Lane said.
William Lane smiled and pinched her little face: âSo, do you like Elder Brother more, or Kevin Clark more?â
Charlotte continued eating her strawberry without speaking.
William Lane patiently waited for her to finish the strawberry, and asked again.
Charlotte looked at him: âCanât I like both?â
âNo, you must choose one that you like more.â William insisted.
Little Charlotte thought seriously for a while: âBut I really like both.â
âThen if both of us fell into the water, who would you save first?â William threw out a difficult question.
Little Charlotteâs eyebrows knit together, her chubby cheeks puffed up: âWhy would you both fall into the water?â
William Lane: ââ¦Itâs just a hypothetical situation.â
âWhatâs a hypothetical situation?â Charlotte asked innocently.
William Lane: ââ¦â¦â
Charlotte Lane looked at William Lane, and after a while, suddenly laughed: âElder Brother, youâre being petty.â
âSo what if Elder Brother is petty?â William grumbled.
Charlotte laughed and, after a while, said: âElder Brother, I want to play on the swing.â
âAlright.â William jumped off the swing and pushed her on it.
Perhaps in response to Charlotteâs call, Arthur North came with his father to the Lane Family that night to deliver some things.
When he arrived, Charlotte was playing with toys upstairs with Aunt Cruz. Upon hearing Arthurâs arrival, she immediately ran downstairs.
âBrother Arthur!â Charlotte started calling from upstairs, then ran all the way down.
Arthur was sitting properly on the sofa, but stood up when he heard her voice.
Then he was pushed back onto the sofa by Charlotteâs hug.
Little Charlotte ran straight into Arthurâs arms and pushed him, who was standing next to the sofa, back into it.
Once Arthur was seated, she clumsily climbed onto his lap and sat in his embrace.
A small flame was burning in William Laneâs eyes.
Adults didnât think there was anything wrong, used to the two children being close. Sophie Ortiz just reminded: âCharlotte, be careful, donât hurt your Brother Arthur.â
Charlotte looked up at Arthur, her bright eyes asking if he was hurt.
Arthur, like a little adult, held her shoulder to keep her from falling and said to Sophie Ortiz: âAunt Sophie, the sofa is soft, itâs okay.â
The adults chatted while the children sat nearby.
Charlotte looked at Arthur and said: âBrother Arthur, you havenât been here for a long time. I missed you so much.â
William rolled his eyes.
âIâve been practicing piano music recently, so Iâve been a bit busy.â Arthur said.
âDid you miss me?â Charlotteâs little voice was fragile.
Arthur didnât say anything for a moment.
He watched as the little girlâs bright eyes lost their luster bit by bit, and the upward curve of her mouth began to sink, then immediately said: âMhm.â
Charlotteâs heart was filled with light again: âMhm means you missed me?â
âMhm.â
Charlotte immediately smiled, rubbed her head against his shoulder, and suddenly said: âBrother Arthur, you smell so good, even better than before.â
âItâs Eaglewood.â
âEaglewood?â Charlotte asked curiously, then sniffed him again after asking.
âDo you like it?â Arthur had long accepted the little girl who had forcefully stepped into his life, and had been getting used to her presence, used to having her around.
âMhm.â
âIâll bring some for you next time.â Arthur said.
âOkay, thank you, Brother Arthur.â Charlotteâs little head leaned back on his shoulder, and she listened to their conversation.
