Alyssa
Vincent got up from his bed, wincing in pain.
âNo, you need to lie down,â I said.
âI want to see my father; let me see my dad, Alyssa,â Vincent growled.
âI understand how it feels to lose a parent, but you need to lie down,â I stood in his way,â
âLet me pass, Alyssa,â Vincent said calmly.
âYou need to rest; you were in surgery not too long ago,â I shook my head at him.
âDONâT TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO DO!â Vincentâs voice echoed throughout the hospital. âI NEED TO SEE MY FATHER!â
Vincent had never shouted at me; it hit me like a brick wall. I know heâs in pain, but it hurt me.
âGet the fuck out of my way, Alyssa,â Vincent shouted.
We soon heard the door open, and the nurse, Izzy, and Jacob walked in.
âVincent, you need to stay in bed,â the nurse ordered.
âEverybody, stop telling me what to do!â Vincent roared. âI need to see him!â
âVincent, please calm down,â I pleaded.
âSHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP!â Vincentâs eyes flashed white as Astarot was about to surface.
âVincent, get back in that bed or I will be forced to give you a seditive,â Dr. Solus said.
Vincent went from sadness to rage; I had never seen him like this. His eyes glowed brighter.
âThis is your last warning before I sedate you, Vincent. Iâm trusting youâll make the right choice here.â Dr. Solus crossed his arms.
âListen to him bro,â Jacob said.
âEverbody back!â Dr. Solus yelled.
âVincent, stand down!â Alex said, running into the room. âYou guys go outside to Audrey, Iâll talk to him,â Alex said. âI need you to leave as well, Alyssa,â
I left the room with Izzy and Jacob while Alex stayed with the nurse and Dr. Solus.
âGuys, whatâs happening?â Audrey said.
âItâs alright, Audrey. Vincent is taking the news badly,â Jacob said.
âIâm going inside,â Audrey said.
âNo, Alexandria is handling it, itâs best if you stay here,â Jacob smiled.
âIâve never seen Vincent like this before,â Izzy said. âAlyssa, are you okay?â
âNo, I need some air and I want to left alone for a while,â I walked outside to the hospital gardens. It has a lovely lake with fish and a family of swans.
âVincent is greiving. Just give him time,â Dahlia said.
âI guess,â I said.
âYou know he cares about you,â Dahlia smiled.
âAlyssa?â I heard Izzy.
âLeave me alone, Isabella. I thought I made that clear,â I glared at her.
âI know, but Alex said itâs not safe for us to be alone. We donât know who started the fires, or if they are still around.â Izzy said.
âI donât a need fucking babysitter,â I huffed.
âI know that! But I think you need a friend,â Izzy touched my shoulder. âAnd I need my friend too,â
âIâve never seen Vincent like this. He yelled at me,â I covered my mouth and cried a little.
âHeâs lashing out, heâs hurting, he doesnât mean it,â Izzy said.
âI know, but it still hurts,â I said.
âSolus gave him a sedative. Heâll be asleep for a few hours,â Izzy said. âLetâs walk and clear our minds for a while,â
âI know where I want to go,â I said as I grabbed her hand.
We returned to the palace, and Izzy looked confused. âAlyssa, why are we here?â
âI need to see if there is something that can tell us who is behind the attack on Varrfarrinn and the death of King Zayne,â I said.
âAre you sure you want to in there?â Izzy said.
âYou can wait outside then,â I said as I entered King Zayneâs study with Izzy following me.
âOh, merciful Moon Goddess!â Izzy gasped. The floor was covered in blood, Two large pools from where Zayneâs and Rosettaâs blood had lain, and bloody footprints from the doctors.
âWish I could say that I never seen this much blood before,â I looked away from the blood.
âIâll start over there,â Izzy pointed to the far right corner.
âWhoever did this was invited in,â I said. I started looking at the door Izzy and I went through to enter the study and examined the lock. There was no sign of forced entry no markings on them either.
âAre you saying that Zayne and Rosetta let the killer in?â Izzy gasped.
âOr the door was already open, and they walked right in,â I said.
I then looked at the table, papers scattered everywhere and spatters of blood on everyone. âNothingâs been taken; whoever did this was only here to kill them,â
âHow can you tell nothingâs been taken?â Izzy questioned.
âI donât know, but these spatters have no empty spaces. Nothing has been moved,â I said, looking at the papers.
âNever had you pinned for an investigator,â Izzy joked.
âGuess Iâm a nateral,â I joked back.
Last, I looked at the floor and found nothing alarming.
âI hope Queen Rosetta pulls through; Vincent, Audrey, and Alex need their mother,â Dahlia said.
âAlyssa, check this out!â Izzy smiled.
âWhat did you find?â I asked.
Izzy held a piece of paper. âIâm not sure,â
Izzy was holding a piece of paper with a drawing on it. âIâve never seen this before,â
âLet me see,â I said as she gave me the paper. I looked at the drawing and a sense of overwhelming dread washed over me. Oh my god. âWhere did you find this?â
âIt was lying next to the shelf, why?â Izzy said.
âCall Alexandria, NOW!â I freaked out. Izzy grabbed her phone and called Alex and gave me the phone.
âAlyssa, whatâs going on?â Izzy said.
Come on, Alex, pick up the fucking phone!
âIsabella? Why the sudden call?â Alex said as she answered the phone.
âAlex, itâs Alyssa. Iâm at your father study and you can yell at me for that later; where are the bodies of the dragons?â
âThe morgue, why?â Alex questioned.
âI need you to meet there now! And donât make ANY STOPS!â I hung up the phone without further explanation.
âWhat the hell, Alyssa?â Izzy gasped.
âTake me to the morgue!â I demanded.
âWhat is this about?â Izzy said, growing worried.
âNOW, IZZY! We donât have much time!â I walked out of the study.
âAlright, follow me!â Izzy ran ahead, and I followed.
We ran to the morgue as fast as possible, and Alex waited for me. âAlyssa, what is this all about and want to tell me why you were in the study?â Alex asked me.
âLater, where are the bodies?â I said.
âFollow me,â Alex guided me to the four bodies of the dragons; they reverted to their human form. âBrayden, can you come in for a second?â
Brayden exited his office, a slightly older middle-aged man with white hair. âGirls, this is Brayden, our coroner. Brayden, meet Alyssa and Isabella.â Alex introduced us to each other.
I looked at the male body, whose neck was severely broken. The Lightning Dragon I killed. âHave you examined their bodies yet? I asked.
âI was about to start,â Brayden said.
âI need to know if any of them have any tattoos,â I asked nicely.
âTattoo?â Breyden tilted his head.
âCan you just look?!â I yelled.
âAlright, no need to yell,â Breyden then went to look at the bodies.
âAlyssa, what the hell are you getting at here? Maybe explain what you were doing in the study,â Alex said.
âWe were investigating,â Izzy explained.
âI asked you to stay with Alyssa as a safety measure Izzy. Not go and do somthing that we have trained specialists for!â
âLeave her alone, Alex, it was my idea,â I defended.
âWhy does it matter if they have tattoos?â Alex scoffed.
âI got one!â Breyden said.
âLet me see!â I said as I pushed Alex out of the way to examine the body. Brayden looked at Alex with an arched eyebrow.
âLet her have a look,â Alex relented.
This is the dragon Vincent killed. It was a femaleâs body, judging by the burnt insides of her mouth and esophagus. Vincent killed this dragon by holding her mouth open and breathing fire down her throat?! I didnât know Vincent could be this brutal. She was lying on her chest, exposing her entire back for me to see. It was severely bruised, and many cuts were visible. I soon saw the tattoo on her right shoulder blade.
âShit,â I whispered.
âWhat is it, Alyssa?â Alex said
Alex walked over and examined the tattoo herself. âCare to explain what is so special about this tattoo?â
âIzzy, show Alex the picture we found in the kings study,â I said.
Izzy gave Alex the paper she had found in the study. Itâs the same drawing as the tattoo. It was a drawing of Planet Earth, and around her was a dragon with its claws dug into her and a tail wrapped around the planet.
âItâs the same people who held me captive,â I said.
Alex quickly turned to me. âAre you sure?â
âI remember seeing this tattoo on some of them. Itâs their logo,â I said.
âAnd youâre only mentioning this now?â Alex seethed.
âI didnât know it was them until I saw it,â I said.
âThe attack was thoroughly planned. No wonder they had us scattered,â Alex said.
âSo what should we do?â Izzy said.
âNot sure,â Alex took out her phone when it started ringing. âScott, talk to me. Youâre kidding me! Iâll be right there,â Alex hung up the phone. âBrayden, call me if you find anything else,â
âYes, maâam!â Brayden nodded.
The three of us walked out of the morgue and went outside. âThe fire dragon is awake. Alyssa, I need you to come with me,â Alex said.
âWhy?â I asked her.
âIf these people are the same that held you captive. You have the most information on them,â Alex said.
âI donât think itâs a good idea to have her talk to him,â Izzy said.
âIn any other circumstance, I would agree with you, Izzy, but my father is dead, and we need all the information we can get,â Alex explained.
âLead the way,â I said,
Alex led Izzy and me to the dungeons where the prisoners were held; we arrived at an interrogation room.
âWhy are they here, Princess?â Scott asked.
âThere with me, thatâs all you need to know Scotty,â Alex glared. âWhereâs the fucker?â
âTristan is with him on level two, room 203,â Scott said.
âGood; ensure everything remains a secret with the rest of the guards here. Until we know my mother will make it, I donât want anyone to know about my fatherâs death. Iâve told everyone in the hospital the same.â Alex said.
âUnderstood, your highness.â Scott bowed.
Alex led us through the dungeon down to level two. She knocked on the door in room 203, and Tristan soon opened and exited the door. His hands were bloody, and it was not his blood.
âDid he say anything?â Alex said.
âNot a word,â Tristan said.
âOkay, let me do the talking from here on out,â Alex said, and we all nodded at her.
Alex and I entered the prison cell; the man had chains of draconite on both his wrists that were bound to the ground. He also had a metal collar made of the same metal that prevented dragon transformation. Some of his bones were broken, probably when Timothy brought him down to the ground at the north tower. His face was beaten, courtesy of Tristan.
Alex approached the man while I stayed hidden in the shadows. There is something familiar about him.
âI canât remember, but we know him,â Dahlia shuddered.
âI hope my friend treated you well,â Alex smiled. âIâll get straight to the point, my friend. Iâm not as patient as my friend who just left. So tell me what you know, or youâll be joining your friends in hell and kiss your ticket to enter the Goddessâs Promised Land goodbye. You undestand me?â Alex said.
The man stood there, never saying a word. Alex grabbed the manâs broken hand and squeezed. The man screamed in pain, and I felt my insides turn cold. âI said, do you understand?â Alex growled.
âYes!â He winced.
Alexandria released his hand, and the man held it close to his chest.
âGood, we have an understanding. Hereâs what I want to know. Who are you? Who are you working for? Why did you attack the Kingdom of Varrfarrinn? Why are you experimenting on magical being?â Alex voiced many questions.
âFuck you, whore,â The man hissed.
Alexandria sighed. âWrong answer!â Alex punched him hard and knocked him down. âDO YOU THINK IâM HERE TO PLAY GAMES?â Alexandria kept beating the living daylights out of the man.
âAlyssa, you have to stop her! Sheâll kill him before we learn anything!â Dahlia gasped.
âAlexandria, stop!â I grabbed her arm before she made another punch. âHe wonât tell us anything if heâs dead,â
Alexandria reluctantly stepped back. The man was lying on the ground, and by the look of his position, he had a few broken ribs. When he got up, I recognized him. I donât know if I should feel sorry for him; after all, he is getting the same treatment that the man he works for gave me.
âDevin???â I said.
âYou know him?â Alex growled.
âAlyssa?â Devin said. âWhat are you doing here?â
âI could ask you the same damn thing,â I glared.
âOutside, now!â Alex then dragged me outside. âYou know him?â
âWhat?â Izzy said. âYou know that fucker?â
âEveryone, chill. I donât know, Devin. He was held captive around the same time as I was. But I had no idea he was a dragon.â I quickly explained.
âWhy where they holding him?â Alex asked.
âI donât know; they put him through the same tests as me,â I said.
âHereâs what I want you to do. Talk to this Devin guy; we need to know what he knows,â Alex said. âYouâll be safe; he has draconite around his wrists and neck. He wonât be a threat and we are out here in case you need us.â
âOkay, but only because this is a last resort, and we have no other option,â I sighed.
I opened the cell door and closed it behind me. âLong time, no see,â I said with disinterest.
âSame to you as well, Alyssa. You bear the mark of a mate, tell me who marked you,â Devin asked.
âNone of your fucking business. What the hell happened to you?â I said. âWhy are you working for those animals? They tortured you!â
âI could ask the same to you, why are you working for them? The zealots that still worship the Moon Goddess. Stuck in the ways of the old religion,â Devin yelled.
âYou mean the friendly people who helped me after I escaped that hell hole? Wonder why?â I scoffed.
âYou stupid bitch,â Devin growled.
âSays the guy locked up,â I laughed.
âWe need information, Alyssa, making is angry will get us nowhere,â I felt Dahlia rolling her eyes.
âTell me, what happened to you?â I crossed my arms.
âThey made me more powerful than I could imagine,â Devin smiled widely. More powerful than the so-called Moon Goddess made us. She made us weak, told the first generation of dragons and beyond to protect the innocent, to be the guardians of the planet,â Devin said.
âYou call hurting innocent people being powerful or strong?â I gasped.
âNo one is innocent, Alyssa. Anyone that stands against us is an enemy of my master,â Devin smiled.
âLetâs get out of here, I have a bad feeling about him,â Dahlia said.
Heâs brainwashed; he was offered power and took it in exchange for his mind and free will. I donât know what they did to him to make him like this.
âWe donât know enough, Dahlia,â I protested. âWho is âUsâ?
Devin gave me a cold smile with his bloody lips, eyes locked on mine, and I felt my heart sink.
âSozin,â Devin said as he raised his hand and broke the draconite chain of his neck.
I stared in shock as his eyes glowed red. He had draconite around his neck and wrists. I bolted for the door, but before I reached it, a stream of fire hit it, melting it shut.
How could he use magic in human form? This should be impossible.
I heard Izzy banging on the door and calling out my name. I looked back at Devin; his face started to turn. He screamed in pain as he was shifting. âNot elegant, but effective,â Devin said. His voice was deeper, rougher, and his face deformed. His eyes were red with yellow slits, his skin growing blood-red scales. His nose lengthened along with his face, and his mouth was more enormous, and I saw sharp white teeth. His body was still the same, and his hands were still chained to the ground.
How is this possible? Devin has a head of a dragon but the body of a mortal man. Oh, Goddess.
âI think itâs time we have a little alone time,â Devin cackled. I watched as the fire began building in his throat. He fired at the corner of the room, destroying the camera that Alexandria and the others were watching through. I could still hear the banging on the melted steel door.
âOh no, weâre stuck in here with him,â Dahliaâs voice was laced with fear.
