After scrolling for over a minute, she finally found the voice message sent by Ringo.
However, the email was too large to be previewed online.
It took Rayna several minutes to download the audio clip. After reducing the volume, she held the device beside her ear.
The audio clip began with only the sound of footsteps before various other noises joined the cacophony as if somebody was watching television.
Rayna sped the clip up.
After listening for a while, she put the playback speed back to normal when she detected the sound of somebody opening the door to enter the room.
âI bought you some strawberries and cherries, Kristie.â A low male voice sounded from the audio clip, followed by the sound of footsteps. âIâll rinse them in the kitchen, then watch television with you. How does that sound?â
Kristie hummed her assent.
Having listened to the dialogue, Rayna assumed from Kristieâs state that it was during the interval when Curtis brought her back from Yartran.
Why did Ringoâs people plant a bug in Kristieâs place at that time?
She did not delve into it but instead pressed the phone against her ear and listened intently.
Curtisâ tone was gentle when he spoke to Kristie, but she merely responded with noncommittal grunts no matter what he said.
Rayna could sense how awful Curtis must have felt.
Feeling awful herself, she once again sped up the clip.
After a while, Rayna heard the sound of the doorbell, followed by Jeremyâs and Wyattâs voices.
The group chatted a little while until Jeremy suddenly said, âHave James come over, Curtis. You saw how much Kristie wanted to see him when I showed her his photograph.â
âThatâs unnecessary. I donât need outsiders to be concerned about my sister.â
Silence befell the group.
âMs. Garland called me, Curtis. She wants to help Jefferson, but she requires the signatures of the politicians who attended the party. It just so happens Iâm on that list too.â
âWe have long since severed ties,â Curtis said blandly. âThereâs no need to consider my feelings.â A while later, Curtis asked Jeremy, âWhen is the party?â
âTwo months from now.â
âInform James of the time and place,â the man said coldly.
âYartran is Arnaudâs turf, Curtis. If you send James, we may not be able to rescue him if heâs captured.â
âEnough! Leave if thereâs nothing else to discuss.â
The audio clip ended at that point. Raynaâs eyes were wide with disbelief.
Only then did she understand how James could have gotten such an accurate inkling of Arnaudâs movements and how he had managed to ambush the latter from his vantage point atop the building.
Turns out it was Curtis who told him all of that!
Her phone vibrated at that moment.
Rayna tapped open her new WhatsApp message and felt her head splitting open when she saw the image Ringo sent.
It was a photograph of an emerald pendant smeared with blood.
She had gotten it at the temple for James. She would recognize it even decades later.
I canât believe he had...
Gazing at the photograph of the emerald pendant, Rayna almost collapsed when her limbs gave way.
It was my mistake for what happened to Kristie. How could Curtis drag my brother into this and send him to exact vengeance on Arnaud by himself? How could he be so wicked?
Raynaâs heart broke when he thought of the manâs cruelty.
She let go of her hand supporting herself against the wall and fell limply onto the floor, startling the others who were eating.
Carl turned around. When he saw Rayna on the floor, he leaped off his chair and ran over. âMs. Rayna, whatâs wrong?â
Seeing that she had fainted over, he calmly ordered Kristie, who was passing by, âAunt Kristie, hurry up and get a doctor!â
When Rayna awoke, she saw the sun shining outside the window. It looked as if it was already morning.
She remembered fainting the night before.
Prompted by the recollection of the prior night, Rayna scrambled to locate her phone but could not find it despite her prolonged search. When she pulled open the door to exit the room, she ran into Jessica, who was coming in and nearly knocking the latter to her feet.
Rayna grabbed her arm with a look of panic. âWhereâs my phone?â
âThe screen is smashed. Carl took it for repairs.â Jessica helped her back to the bedroom. âThe doctor says youâve been working too hard lately, Nana. You need proper rest.â
âI donât want to rest!â Rayna flung her arm away to head outside. âI have many things to do, and Iâm going over for a look. Ringo must be lying to me.â
James canât be dead!
Jessica dashed forward to grab her. âCalm down, Nana. This isnât good for the baby.â
Baby?
Having returned to her senses, Rayna gazed down at her belly, and a horrible feeling rose from her chest. She blinked, and her tears began flowing down her cheeks.
âWhatâs wrong, Nana?â Jessica scrambled to wipe her tears. âWhat happened?â
Rayna hugged her and cried even louder.
Jessica did not ask anymore. She only patted her back in consolation.
When Rayna had cried enough, Jessica pulled her to sit by the bed and poured her a glass of warm water. âWhatâs going on?â
Shaking her head, Rayna forced a smile. âI just feel horrible at the thought of what happened to Jasmine.â
âMe too, but we canât do anything to help.â Jessica sighed. âMr. York is there for them, so donât worry. Take good care of the babies and yourself.â
âOkay.â
âGet some more rest,â Jessica said gently. âWhat would you like to eat? Iâll make you some.â
âWhen did you learn how to cook?â
Jessicaâs gaze turned grim. âItâs not hard to cook,â she said with a pout. âIt just takes practice. All right, go lie down for a bit. Iâll call you when itâs time to eat.â
Jessica left quickly.
Weighed down by the immense burden of her unspeakable secrets, Rayna tossed and turned on the bed without being able to fall asleep.
The bloodied emerald pendant remained stubbornly in her mindâs eye.
She kept telling herself that her brother was too smart to be in mortal danger, and he must have lost the emerald pendant during his flight. The blood must belong to someone else.
Despite her words of self-consolation, she could not stop her tears from falling. She was afraid that she might see the cruel truth.
Unable to fall asleep, Rayna pulled open the bedroom door and went outside, where she vaguely heard Kristieâs indignant voice.
âCurt is too much. How could he do this? Iâm going to denounce him as my brother!â
âWatch yourself. Nana is still asleep,â Jessica cautioned. âYou donât want to wake her up.â
âRayna canât hear us,â Kristie muttered, lowering her voice.
Jessica said, âDonât concern yourself with that. Besides, Nana has broken up with Mr. Faymon and no longer cares about his life.
Do you understand?â
Kristie snatched her phone and said scornfully, âCurt must be blind! This woman is not as beautiful as Rayna!â
âThatâs enough out of you! Donât let Nana see this news.â
Rayna had already come over while they were discussing. âWhat were you guys talking about? What news am I not supposed to see?â
Kristie whipped around reflexively. Startled by Raynaâs appearance, she hid her phone behind her back. âOh, just some tabloid gossip!â
âLet me see.â Rayna stretched out her hand to take the phone.
âN-Nah,â Kristie stammered as she took several steps backward. âThereâs nothing to see.â
Rayna noticed her screen was still alight and strode over in two wide steps.
Taking advantage of her lapse of vigilance, she snatched Kristieâs phone.
Raynaâs pupils dilated when she saw the news.
