"Like nothing else matters as long as you're with them. I know love when I see it," I roll my eyes.
"I don't believe in love. I used to, but... something happened," Mrs. D looks at me with sorrowful eyes.
"Honey, don't let your past heartbreaks keep you from learning new love. Love doesn't come and go. It stays with you forever. I haven't heard Winters laugh in years and the way he looks at you. You can tell something in his cold heart is warming," I look at her with glossy eyes.
"He said nothing to me when I asked him if he was willing to sacrifice things for me. This isn't love when you're not willing to give everything up for that one special person," I look at the pile of food on the table.
"Mr. Winters and I are too different to connect. I don't want him to get hurt with being with me," Mrs. D hugs me.
"Being different is like a puzzle. In time, every single different piece connects," I look at Mrs. D. Those words almost sounded like Julie's words. What's up with old ladies and puzzles?
"I hope so," Mrs. D hands me my bag.
"Your phone has been going off a lot. You might want to check it," I sigh. I really don't want to deal with Violet or Charlotte now. I know they're going to pester me about Mr. Winters. I text Violet to come pick me up.
"Is my dress done? Because I have important things to tend to," I see Mrs. D smile.
"I think it has ten minutes left on it. You're leaving soon soon, sugar? You haven't ate a single bite yet," I chuckle.
"The food looks amazing, but I usually don't eat in the mornings and that's okay. You can mail it or have it delivered to my sister's house when it's done. What's the address to this house? I have to tell my sister to pick me up," I see her smile.
"It's 123 Sickamore Ave. Let me walk you out, so the guards won't arrest you," I look at her confused. Guards? I watch her grab a giant bag off the counter.
Mrs. D leads me through the massive house to the front door. She opens the door for me, and I see a huge and long driveway. Holy shit. I hear her laugh as I admire the driveway. She continues to walk as I follow her down the driveway to the gates.
"Thank you so much for the food, clothes, and love you have been giving me today. Also, I must say you do an amazing job at cleaning this house, and your kitchen is gorgeous," I hear her laugh.
"Well, I try my best sweetheart. Here, take this so you don't catch a cold out here waiting for your ride," I see Mrs. D grab a blanket out of her enormous bag. She wraps it around me and hands me the bag.
"I also have some goodies for you to take with you to put some meat on them bones," I laugh.
"You're too kind, Mrs. D," She smiles. I see Violet's car pull up to the gates.
"There's my ride. You better get inside too, Mrs. D, and get warm. Oh, before I forget. The address to mail the dress to is 248 Elmers Ave."
"Oh, don't worry about me darling, I'll be fine. You better get to your ride and warm up," Mrs. D kisses me on the cheek, and I get in the front seat of Violet's car.
I notice Charlotte in the back seat as Violet drives away. It's quiet in the car. Too quiet. Violet stares at the road quietly, not saying a word.
"Hey, sis. There's no questioning me as to why I didn't text or call back?"
"Violet, you might as well as tell her what's going on," I hear Charlotte say.
"Tell me what?" I look worrying at Violet. I see her sigh.
"Dave and I are getting a divorce," The words made my heart skip a beat. My whole body was cheering from the inside, but I couldn't show it to Violet. I try to look remorseful.
"I'm so sorry to hear that, Violet. Are you okay?"
"It's okay. You don't have to sound concerned. I know you didn't like Dave and wanted us to split up," I see a tear fall down her face, and her voice sounding like it's cracking.
"I found out last night that he was cheating on me. Apparently, we came home sooner than he thought. He wasn't home when me and Charlotte came home. HE left MY kids with a fucking babysitter! He knows how much I hate when he leaves MY kids with a fucking stranger," I see her hit the steering wheel as tears strolled down her eyes.
"I wait until that motherfucker came home, and I could smell the alcohol and perfumes of other women on him. I knew he's been going to strip clubs, and I let it slide because you know a man needs a break, but if he's going to bring my children into it, then that's the final straw. Charlotte watched my kids while I kicked the babysitter out and told Dave off when he came home," Violet wipes her tears.
"I filed for a divorce this morning. It'll take a week for it to be effective with the paperwork. Maybe it was for the best. Maybe it's time for a change. MAYBE it's time for a change for you, too, sis. Are you still seeing Dad?" She looks at me.
"Yeah," I look out the window.
"You need therapy. I not telling you, I'm forcing you. Someone has to. It's not healthy to go to his grave in the morning. Have you talked about him to anyone?" I say nothing.
"Honey, it's time for a change. As soon as you get home, start therapy. I know a great therapist that will help you. Also, it might help to change careers, too. You know you still have that associate degree in business school that Dad put you through," I look at her.
"Maybe you're right. I'll start therapy as soon as I get back, and when the time comes, I'll find a new job, but for now, I wanna say I'm proud of you, sis. I'm glad you're getting rid of that asshole, but can we stop somewhere? The car is making me nauseous," I see Violet look at Charlotte in the mirror of the car.
"You're feel nauseous?"
"Yeah. I must be still throwing up from drinking last night," Violet laughs.
"Yeah, you did drink a lot," I sigh.
"I had a lot to drink about. From a person I was close to dying before I came here to about guy problems. I just wanted it all to go away by drinking it away," Violet pulls into a gas station.
"We have one mile to home, you sure you can't hold it until then?" As soon as Violet parks, I rush out of the car to inside and run into the bathroom, into the stall.
I feel the acid burn my throat as I start barfing my stomach out. Welp, there goes the good coffee I had at Winty Pooh's place. I hear the bathroom door open.
"Evangeline, are you okay?" I hear Violet say, sounding worried.
"Yeah. I'm okay," I flush the toilet and wash my hands.
Violet feels my forehead and cheeks. You don't feel warm. She feels my stomach and around my body. Violet looks me in the eyes mad.
"You're not pregnant, are you?" I look at her like she's crazy.
"Hell no," Violet looks at me like she doesn't believe me.
"Okay, but if you're not feeling better by tomorrow, you're taking a pregnancy test, like it or not," I roll my eyes.
"Fine," We grab some snacks from the gas station and then go to Violet's house.
"Kids are at school, so go get in bed and rest," I enter her home, and go to my bedroom and cover in bed. Before I know it, my eyes start to get heavy, and I fall asleep.
I feel a sudden startle at my arm as I see Charlotte trying to wake me up.
"Here, you need to eat," She hands me a bowl of soup with salty crackers and juice.
"Violet says it's the best thing to eat when you're sick. Call me if you need anything," I watch Charlotte leave. I eat the soup and put it on the nightstand. I lay back in bed and fall asleep again.
"Evangeline, wake up, the bus already left," I startle awake, looking around, realizing I graduated high school eight years ago. I hear Violet laugh.
"It still works on you," I roll my eyes.
"Those were some traumatic days where Dad used to yell at us if we missed the bus," I hear Violet laugh.
"Here, take some medicine and eat supper. I made grilled chicken and broccoli with lemonade to see how that does on your stomach," Finally, some real food. I watch Violet leave before I start scoffing down the food. The food mixed with the lemonade tastes like heaven.
I take the meds and put the empty food on the stand where the other bowl used to be. I lay back in bed and fall asleep. The bright sun shines on my face as I open my eyes. I get up and stretch. Damn, that sleep is just what I needed. My stomach rumbles as I feel vomit start coming up. I run to the restroom and start barfing in the toilet. Damn it, not again.
"You're barfing again?" I turn and see Violet in the doorway in her pajamas.
"I was feeling fine yesterday after I barfed."
"That's it," I see her open the medicine cabinet, and grab two tests, and set it on the counter.
"You're taking it," I look at the test and Violet.
"Why are there two?" Violet sighs.
"I'm going to take one with you. You're not the only one who's been having morning sickness," I look shocked at Violet.
"Fine. I'll take it," I watch Violet leave the restroom and close the door. I flush the toilet and wash my hands.
I grab the box and look at the instructions. I sit on the toilet and take out the test. Well, here goes nothing. I pee on the test and set it on the counter. I flush and wash my hands, and open the door to Violet standing outside.
"Your turn. Be careful. My test's on the counter," I see Violet roll her eyes and enter the restroom. I wait for what feels like forever outside the restroom. The door opens, and Violet steps out.
"Okay, now that that's over with. Let's go eat breakfast," I look at her confused.
"What about the kids?" I hear Violet sigh.
"The kids are at Dave's mother's house today. I figured it would be good for them to spend time with their only grandma whilst this whole thing is going on," I nod. I see Charlotte come out of the bedroom yawning.
"What's going on?" I laugh.
"I'll explain the whole thing to you when we eat," I see Charlotte confused. I explain the whole thing to her as we eat fruit for breakfast.
"So, there's a chance both of you could be pregnant?" I nod.
"It's not something I'm excited about, but yeah," Charlotte looks at me seriously.
"Did you tell Violet who the dad could be," I see Violet look at me with wide eyes.
"Um, no?"
"Who might be the dad, Evangeline?" I look down at my fruit, not wanting to see Violet's mad face.
"Mr. Winters," Violet's jaw drops. I see her run out of the kitchen, and I run after her.
"Violet!" She runs up to the restroom and looks at the test. I see her frozen. I look at both tests with two plus signs on each of them. Shit.
