-Evangeline-

"I can't use the stairs. I'm pregnant, remember?" Mr. Winters walks towards me and pushes the elevator button in front of me. I get on the elevator, and he gets in after me, standing close to me. His aroma fills my nose, bringing back memories. I scoot a little away from him, hoping he doesn't notice.
My watch beeps, and I look at the time. Lunchtime. Finally!
"Well, it was nice touring with you, Mr. Winters, but it's lunchtime. I'll meet you back at your office for the rest of the tour," I press the button to the first floor for the cafeteria.
"You're going to the cafeteria?"
"Yeah. I didn't get a chance to pack my lunch because I didn't know I was going to be working today."
"I can take you to get lunch, if you want," I chuckle.
"Mr. Winters, I only have thirty minutes of lunchtime. If I go and get something to eat, then I won't have time to eat. Plus, I don't think my boss would like me late from lunch," Lying, thinking of ways to decline him because I don't want to be next to him any longer. Mr. Winters chuckles.
The doors open, and I get out, walking to the cafeteria on the first floor. I grab some food and pay my last five dollars for it. I walk to the elevator and go down to the parking lot. I get inside my car, lock it, and put my phone on the dash, on speaker, calling Charlotte.
"Hey, did you know that the pregnancy magazine says you get heartburn from the baby because the baby is growing hair," I laugh.
"Yeah, I know. I've been having heartburn all day. Charlotte, tell me something. When you made this interview for me, did you know who owned it?" I hear Charlotte say nothing.
"Charlotte?!"
"I may have known Hunter Winters owns the company, but I didn't know that Mr. Winters's brother owned it too?"
"Oh, you think!? I had to get a tour by this really sweet girl named Candy, and she tried to introduce me to Mr. Winters, but I ALREADY know him!" I hear Charlotte laugh. I lay my head on my steering wheel.
"Every time I look at him, I get butterflies in my stomach. My heart flutters and his dreamy smokey-blue eyes make my knees weak. He touched my cheek earlier, and it made me want to melt into his arms, wanting all my problems to disappear. Now, I'm stuck with him as my tour guide. I honestly don't think I can do it, Charlotte. I'm going to go back in there and quit."
"You still like him! Plus, you'll be fine, and you need this job. Don't do it for him, but do it for Johnny," I hold my little boy in my stomach.
"Of course, I like him, but like Violet said you can't change history, but that doesn't mean I can't be angry at him for it, and you're right. For Johnny. I'll only do it for him," I grab my food and take a bite.
"So, what are you doing now?"
"I'm eating lunch from the cafeteria," I hear Charlotte gasp.
"The cafeteria?! I would have made you lunch! Do they at least have decent food?" I laugh.
"Well, I didn't know I was going to work today, so I didn't pack a lunch. I think this is some sort of chicken nugget ball with french fries on the side. Also, I'm working tomorrow, so I'm going to probably eat the same thing again."
"Ew, It sounds horrible. I'll make your lunches from now on," I laugh. I jump from knocking at my window. I look out my window and see Mr. Winters.
"Shit. This man's everywhere I go," I roll down my window.
"Who's that?" I hear Charlotte say.
"Good evening, Mr. Winters. How can I help you?" I fake smile at him.
"I heard you screaming. I wanted to check to see if everything okay," I chuckle.
"Why wouldn't it be?"
"It's Mr. Winters?!" Charlotte yells. I roll my eyes.
"Goodbye, Charlotte."
"Wait! Get some man- " I hear her say as I hang the phone up.
"I see Charlotte is still herself," I chuckle.
"Of course she is," Mr. Winters looks at me as I take a sip of water.
"You know, I just so happen to get an extra sandwich, if you want it?" I look at the sack holding two styrofoam containers Mr. Winters holds up. The smell of the food makes my stomach growl.
"You know. I don't think my boss will like me eating late into the working day," Mr. Winters chuckles.
"I insist, come have lunch with me," I roll my eyes and get out of the car.
"Fine, only because you insist," That and I know these stale four chicken nuggets aren't going to fill me. I follow Mr. Winters into the elevator. He pushes the 54th floor button.
"I didn't know we had a 54th floor?" I hear Mr. Winters chuckle.
"We have 55 floors to be exact. The 54th floor is my office and the conference room," I look at Mr. Winters, confused.
"What's on the 55th floor?" Mr. Winters looks at the elevator, seriously.
"The third owner of Mr. Winters's industry," The elevator doors open. Mr. Winters walks out, and I follow him, passing a large conference room with glass walls. He walks up to two big polished doors and opens them. I follow Mr. Winters into a huge room with a large desk in front of large windows connecting to the other walls.
"We're eating on your desk? I wouldn't want to make a mess on it," I look at all the important paperwork on his desk. Mr. Winters chuckles.
"Don't worry about making a mess. You can move the paperwork into a pile," I grab the paperwork, stack it neatly, and hand it to Mr. Winters.
He grabs the paperwork, places it into a pile by him, and hands me my container. I sit down in the chair across from him and open my container. The smell hits me and makes me crave it even more. It may be just a turkey sandwich, but to a pregnant lady who's hungry as hell. It's everything. I grab the sandwich and take a big bite. Mr. Winters stares at me, and I look at him with a mouth full of sandwich. I cover my mouth.
"Sorry. I don't know what you're used to or expecting, but I don't eat like a lady," Mr. Winters chuckles as I chew my food.
"I don't expect anything from you. I'll do anything to feed the little one," I put my sandwich down and swallow. I wipe my mouth with a napkin and stand up.
"Look, I get that you're wanting to help with my child, but don't. I know you're only doing this out of feeling guilty for not wanting anything to do with him. You made it very clear that you didn't want anything to do with him," I grab my container of food and walk to the elevator.
"Wait! Evangeline that's not what I meant," I enter the elevator, looking at Mr. Winters as the elevator doors close.
I finish lunch with Candy and go up the elevator. I walk to my desk as some people glance at me. I sit down and open my notebook, lying on my desk, to the first hardback page. I stare at the ultrasound and sigh. I'm doing this job for you.
I flip through my notebook as I see other employees glancing at me. My heart starts racing as I see all my work endings are gone. I see Mr. Winters walking by everyone, checking to see if they're working. I type on my computer, trying to pretend to work, feeling nervous as I feel Mr. Winters's shadow over me. I see him move on to check on other employees and then go to his office. A slight relief sways over me as he goes inside his office. I organize my work and pretend to work for the rest of the day, not knowing what to do. I start to pack as it's time to go home.
"Evangeline," I hear Mr. Winters call from his office.
"Oooooo," I hear other workers say, teasing me. I roll my eyes. Oh, shit. Is he going to fire me?! Feeling nervous, I walk into his office and close the door. I see him gesture with his eyes to take a seat. Butterflies fly in my stomach as I sit down. Mr. Winters throws a ball in the air and catches it.
"You've been working here, for a month, right?"
"Before you start saying anything about me doing nothing all day, all my paperwork endings were gone," Mr. Winters chuckles.
"You know, Evangeline, I don't take people not working lightly. I've seen normal people copy and paste from the internet and place it on a Word document in the computer and then print it out, but you. I've never seen a person look up the subject on the internet, write it on Notebook paper, and then print it out," I chuckle.
"How else am I going to tell how much work I've done? I know how much this company means to you, so I promise I'll take my work home and stay up and work until I find the rest of the endings, even if I have to redo all the work. I'll get it done," Mr. Winters chuckles.
"Oh, I know you will, Evangeline. You can go home now," A smile forms on my face at the sight of relief. I leave his office. I grab my two bags, my notebook, and my book from my desk and go inside the elevator as I put earphones in. I walk out of the building and into the parking lot while listening to my music.
"It's been awhile since I've seen the way the candles light your face and it's been awhile. But I can still remember just the way you taste," Singing the song and humming the tune to myself as I walk to my car. I finally reach my car after the long, tiring walk. I catch my breath as I hear my phone ringing. I accept the call from Violet.
"Hey, Violet what's up?"
"Hey, Eve. I'm going to be working late. I have two more surgeries I have to do before I get home. Can you make sure the girls eat supper and go to bed on time?" I chuckle.
"Of course, I will. You know Charlotte doesn't get to bed on time. Make sure you don't overwork yourself. You're pregnant, too, remember?" I unlock my car and throw my bags into the passenger seat, making a loud thud. I hear Violet laugh.
"What about you? You're bringing work home, again?" I chuckle.
"Valid point there," I hear Violet laugh.
"I'll see you at home, sis. I love you."
"I love you, too, sis," Violet says as I hang the phone and get in my car. Damn, being pregnant and carrying all this stuff, isn't it. I turn the key in the ignition, but the car doesn't start. I try again and the car just makes a weird erring noise. Shit!
I try to look at the buttons on my door, but I can't see them. I open the door to use the street light to see the buttons. I jump at Mr. Winters standing next to my car.
"Car problems?" I roll my eyes and hear Mr. Winters chuckle.
"You know my house is just down the road," I smile.
"I know, I've been there before. Several times," Mr. Winters looks at me, pretending to be confused.
"You have, when?" I laugh.
"You know, when you took me home and I tried to you know. Have sex with you," I put two fingers in between each other to indicate it. Mr. Winters laughs.
"Well, if you want to, we could go to my place, and I don't know. Maybe watch a movie?" I chuckle.
"Are you asking me out on a date? Because I don't know if I'll have time with all the work I have to do tonight. My boss got onto my ass pretty hard today," Mr. Winters chuckles.
"It's up to you," Mr. Winters walks away. I look at my car and my stuff. As much as I don't want to, I seem to have no choice in a ride right now. My car's dead, and it's too long of a walk for me to walk. I'm sure it'll be fine with my stuff in it. I get out and lock my car.
"Wait up!" I see Mr. Winters walking slowly. I walk up to him and give him my keys.
"If I'm going, you're driving," I say sarcastically. Mr. Winters leads the way to his car. Of course, he parked near me.
Mr. Winters goes to the driver's side an old-looking truck. Finally, he gets a normal car. He stares into my eyes as he goes into the fancy truck next to it. I roll my eyes and try to go to the passenger side. When I walk in front of the truck, Mr. Winters backs out. I could tell he was smiling from the window view.
"Haha, very funny, a pregnant lady can't walk far, you know?" I walk to the passenger side, and he lets me in inside the warm truck. I buckle in, and he starts driving.
I listen to the soothing music and lay my head on his shoulder. I put my hand on my belly as I imagine what it would be like with our little one on my lap. The warmth of his shoulder and the warmth of the car remind me of times, like this, which is why I lov- LIKE him. Like him. I don't love him. There's no way. It's not possible.
Mr. Winters drives to his house and parks by the gate. I look up and gasp as I see his whole long driveway destroyed and his house being bulldozed down the rest of the way.
