Mae leaped out of Elijah's arms as Bianca came storming in the room. Everyone stopped dancing to watch what all the commotion was about when Bitchy Bianca strode right up to my neighbor.
She raised her hand and swung it in a high arc over her head before Elijah could react. His eyes widened as her palm connected with his cheek, knocking his head sideways forcefully. The sound of the smack echoed through the room and the guests heaved a collective gasp. I stood frozen as Mae looked like she was about to cry.
Elijah slowly brought his head back around, flipping the hair out of his eyes that had fallen when his head had been whipped to the side. A dark red splotch was already forming on his cheek. The intensity in his green eyes made Bianca falter. To say he was pissed was an understatement.
Mae scrambled over to my side, almost cowering behind me. Uriah looked ready to step in between his brother and Bianca, but he didn't know if he should.
"I was dancing," Elijah said low in his throat.
Bianca crossed her arms over her chest in a show of nonchalance even though I knew she was nervous. "With that freak?" She yelled, pointing over at Mae.
Mae gawked and sprinted out of the room. I gave Uriah a helpless look and dashed out after her. I couldn't hear what else was going on in the living room, but right now I didn't care. I just wanted to make sure Mae was okay.
Which I knew she wasn't.
I found her crying in the bathroom, sitting in a ball on the toilet. She had shut the lid and sat on top of it, folding her legs and burying her face in her hands. I stopped beside the toilet and placed a hand on her shoulder.
I was so not good at comforting people. Like I said, I've never really had friends before so this was all new to me. I stood there awkwardly while Mae cried silent tears.
"Don't listen to Bianca. She's just jealous-"
Mae shook her head, finally looking up at me. Her makeup was running down her face and I was scared it was going to ruin her dress. I shut the door behind me and yanked a bunch of toilet paper off the roll and handed it to her.
She wiped under her eyes and said, "It's okay, Veronica. You don't have to make me feel better. There's nothing really to say."
I sighed and sat down across from her on the ledge of the bathtub. "No, it's not okay. What Bianca said was so wrong. I'm not letting her get away with this," I said, standing back up.
Mae looked up at me and held out both of her hands, waving them. "Woah, woah. What are you doing?" She asked.
I placed my hand on the doorknob and grinned at her when I said, "Something that I've been wanting to do for a while."
I opened the door as she said, "Veronica, I don't think that's a very good idea..."
I gave her a giant thumbs up. "I know." Then I shut the door and found Uriah standing out in the hallway who asked, "How is she?"
I said, "She's upset, but she'll be okay. Can you go in there with her and talk to her, though?" Uriah nodded, his brown eyes full of concern and went in the bathroom. Then I kept my head up high as I walked through the house with purpose.
I found my target where I had left her in the living room. I had expected her to be arguing with Elijah still, so when I saw the two of them on the couch making out, I froze.
What the hell? They had been ready to tear each other's throats out only a couple minutes ago and now they were making out. Talk about disgusting. Bleh.
It made me angry to see Elijah on the couch sucking Bianca's face. He had just been dancing with Mae and now he was shoving his tongue down another girl's throat as if he had never danced with Mae in the first place. Bianca had even bitch-slapped him, yet here they were making me want to puke.
I clenched my fists and because I knew no boundaries when it came to privacy, I strode right up to the two of them and tapped Elijah on the shoulder. He lazily unlocked his lips from the cheerleader's and locked his eyes that were full of lust on me.
Bianca pouted when Elijah broke away from her. Her frown turned into a look of pure hatred when she saw me. I waved at her, giving her a big smile.
"What do you want?" Elijah growled, narrowing his green eyes on me. He smoothed back his messy hair, making the bottom of his shirt rise slightly.
I refused to ogle his six pack that was clearly visible. His dress shirt had been unbuttoned all the way, display his muscular abdomen. I imagined Bianca's hands running all over his body and felt my hands tighten back into fists.
I took a deep breath and relaxed. "You got a little something right here," I said, twirling my finger around so I was pointing at my own cheek. I smashed my lips together to keep from bursting out in laughter.
Elijah swiped his hand down his cheek where Bianca had slapped him. A smudge of hot pink lip stick in the form of puckered lips had been pressed right on the same spot as where the bruise had surfaced. Oh, the irony.
Elijah took a look at his fingers that were now also bright pink. Bianca smirked.
"You missed a spot," I said. I licked my finger and bent over so I was right in Elijah's face. He stiffened as I leaned closer and swiped my finger down his cheek. I stood back up with a look of disdain on my face as I saw Bianca's lip stick on my finger.
"Ugh, gross," I said, disgusted.
I took my finger and swiped it down the length of Elijah's white dress shirt, leaving a streak of hot pink down the length of it. I tried to not pay attention as his muscles rippled under my touch or to how warm his body felt. Instead, I stood up triumphantly and beamed at him.
"What the fu-"
Bianca cut Elijah off. "You bitch!" She yelled in her high pitched voice that she used for cheerleading during sports' games. She certainly wasn't rooting for my team right now. Oops.
Elijah started to get off the couch and I took that as my queue to get the hell out of there. I saluted the both of them with my middle finger and said, "Carry on."
Then I bolted for the bathroom. I may have just barely escaped with my life, narrowly evading death. However, if I didn't get out of here soon, I wasn't sure I could be so confident about the previous statement.
I barged into the bathroom, startling Mae and Uriah with my urgency. Uriah fell backwards into the bathtub, making Mae crack up. I reached a hand down to Uriah to help him out since it was my fault he had fallen in. He grabbed my hand with a mischievous grin and yanked on my arm. I tumbled in the bathtub beside him, nearly landing right on top of him. My blue dress rode up my thighs and I tugged it back down.
"Guys, we gotta get out of here!" I said, jumping out of the bathtub.
"I told you it wasn't a good idea!" Mae said.
"What do you mean, Mae? What wasn't a good idea?" Uriah asked looking at Mae then at me. I smiled sheepishly.
"We don't have time for that right now. Just follow me!" I yelled, grabbing each one of their hands. I dragged them out of the bathroom and out of Bianca's mansion into the chilly night air. I didn't stop running with them right behind me until we reached Uriah's car where he had parked it down the street.
We all got inside and they both said at the same time, "What'd you do, Veronica?"
"Let's just say that your brother didn't appreciate it when I interrupted his make out session with Bianca and then tried to turn his shirt a different color." I smirked.
Uriah and Mae gawked at me as if I had two heads. "What?" I asked.
As if on command, they both burst out laughing. I couldn't help but join in with them with how stupid that had sounded. Clutching my stomach, I said, "He's probably looking for me right now. Go, go, go!"
Shaking his head, still laughing, Uriah put his keys in the ignition and started the car. He drove Mae home first. When she got out of the car, I stuck my head out the window and yelled to her, "Mae! I had a great time tonight! Don't worry about Elijah. He's a jerk. You can do so much better than him!"
Mae beamed at me from the top of her driveway as she shouted back, "Thank you!"
Uriah backed out of her driveway and drove us to our houses, once again pulling up in my driveway even though our houses were right next to each other. He came around and opened the door for me, offering me his hand. I placed mine in his as he helped me out of his BMW.
When I got out, I realized I was missing something. My shoes. Well, they were my mother's shoes.
"Crap, I left my shoes at Bianca's house," I groaned. Uriah chuckled and looked down at my feet.
"In that case, I guess I'll just have to..."
Uriah's arms came up under my legs as he scooped me against his chest. He held me above the ground, making sure my dress didn't scrape along the gravel driveway as he carried me to my front porch. He gently set me down in front of the door.
"Thanks, Uriah. I had an amazing night with you," I blushed. Uriah's deft fingers tucked stray pieces of hair behind my ear as he cupped my chin in his other hand. I was pretty sure my blue eyes looked wild and my blonde hair was a mess, but he didn't seem to mind. I looked into his warm eyes and my heart beat picked up. He leaned in, closing his eyes and I stilled, readying for the kiss.
Uriah placed his lips against mine, and I melted against him. I kissed him back with passion. We broke apart, breathing heavily. "This was the best night I ever had," Uriah said. "Oh, and I'll text Elijah to look for your shoes before he leaves. If he can't find them, I'll go over tomorrow and grab them."
"You don't have to do that," I said.
Don't get me wrong, I thought it was sweet and all that Uriah was willing to find my shoes for me, but I didn't like the fact that Elijah would be the one to get them for me. I did not want to confront him when he brought me my shoes after what I did to him. Knowing him though, I doubted he would even bother to look for my shoes.
"It's alright, I don't mind." He smiled with his dimples.
"If he can't find them," which I prayed he wouldn't, "then I'll come with you to look."
"Okay," Uriah said, giving me one last kiss on my forehead before walking back to his car. I walked inside my house full of mixed emotions.
My mother wouldn't be happy that I had lost her shoes, so I dashed up to my room before she could see me without them. I ran past her bedroom door that was shut and realized that she must be asleep.
I carefully took off my dress and hung it up in my closest. Then I put on my pajamas and fell right asleep, staring out my bedroom window into Elijah's empty room.
