Chapter 29: Fake hope

The Secret Of My Father's DisappearanceWords: 9786

Jan turned to Mark and asked: When we first found Max, how did she react?

He said: like anyone who found his father after years. What is this question?

Jan said, "The strange thing is, he is not Max!"

he wondered: What do you mean?

Jan: Do you remember Grandpa's words about having twins, one of them (Dan), Jane's father and Mary, and the other (Art), Sarah's stepfather?

He nodded: What about them?

He replied: What we know so far is that Art left the country after his involvement with the creditors who took revenge on Dan. Then we found (Art) lying in one of the centers after returning from the United States, there is a big gap between the events. Mr. Tan told us this is true, but he still hides a lot.

He thought for a moment, then said: Hey, hey, are you saying that Sarah knew he wasn't her father when she met him? And she hid it from all of us?

He replied: Perhaps not at first. Her feelings were real. I think she discovered something later.

Mark muttered, "But she didn't tell me."

Jan: We have to wait until she recovers.

Saturday, 9th May

The nurse entered the room and opened the curtains to let the sunlight in, Sarah woke up, and the nurse approached her, smiling: Good morning, Miss, how are you feeling today?

She stared at her for a few seconds and then replied: "I'm fine, thank you... Where am I?"

She replied while making the beds: You are in the capital hospital; you were transferred with several patients last night after the care center had a fire accident.

She raised herself to sit up and said, surprised: A fire accident!

She thought to herself: This can't be an accident, these guys are crazy, I'm sure they set the fire to bury everything they have done under the rubble.

She said to her: Excuse me! Was there a patient named Max?

She thought for a moment, then said, "No, no foreigner has been transferred but you."

Then she said, "What about Art?" He is a man in his fifties.

She smiled and answered: Oh yes, he is lying in the next room, is he someone you know?

She removed the blanket and put on the slippers, then said: Yes!

And she left the room to see him, she knocked on the door, but no one answered her, so she entered and saw him on the bed and the appliances around him, she approached him and sat on the chair looking at him.

She looked at the door, then at him, and said, "Mr. Art, can you hear me?"

The detectives go back to the police station and they're still trying to question Kyle, trying to figure out who he works for. They entered the room and Jan asked the commander: Are there any updates?

He replied, "Unfortunately, Kyle still adheres to his right to remain silent."

Jan: This is going to take a lot of time.

The commander turned to him: I don't think so, the commissioner sent a letter ending the case and sending it to the prosecutor's office as soon as possible.

Then he took the file in front of him and said, "Zhao has searched for SJ Construction." There have been articles about Steve's merger with another company called M&S Construction, but the owner of the company was found dead.

He continued, "It was stated in his autopsy report that he died in October. His body was found in his home, but it was tampered with to appear as an accident."

Jan: Was M&S Construction a competitor to SJ Construction?

The Commander nodded and said, "Yes, and they had a dispute over government contract bids. Steve tried to get the manager of M&S to merge, but he refused, so...

Mark: So, he sends someone to teach him a lesson.

The commander said: Yes, so he sent his right hand, to intimidate, threaten and kill the manager, the two companies merged and today its name is SJ Construction Company.

Jan: Who is the director of M&S Construction?

The commander replied, "You won't believe it, it's Jack."

Mark: You mean the same Jack whose body we found at Max's house!

The captain replied, "Yes, that's to be expected, because you gave Kyle the order to find Jack."

Jan: So, the data he brought that day was nothing but fabricated information.

Mark: Because if we get the right information, Steve's name will come out and we'll investigate him and then his tricks will be revealed, but there's still a missing link between them.

Jan: This is how they found out where Mary and Sarah were, the arrival of that gang wasn't just a coincidence.

Mark looked at the captain in amazement: Wait! You said Jack was killed in his house?

The Commander nodded, and Jan said, "That means it's not Max's house." I wonder if Mr. Tan says anything but lies.

Mark: He cheated on her from the first moment, I can't believe it!

They were interrupted by the ringing of Mark's phone. He pulled it out and answered quickly, anxiously, "Sarah, are you awake?" How are you? Did something happen?

She smiled and replied, "Everything is fine." I called because I wanted to talk to you about something important, do you have some time?

Exclamation: Important?! Yes, I'm done with work. I'll be right there.

He hung up and said, "Commander, I'm going to see Sarah."

He nodded, "Okay, I'll tell Zhao to check on SJ Construction."

Jan came forward, saying, "I'll come with you."

Mark turned to him and laughed, then said: "We will leave first goodbye."

In the evening, she was sitting on her bed nervously waiting for him to come. There was a knock on the door, and she turned towards it. She got up and smiled: Detective Mark, it's good that you came there...

She noticed Jan's enter, so her expression turned to anger. She approached him and kicked him, saying: You prankster! Oh, I can't believe you did this to me! I thought we were a team!

Jan held his leg in pain, saying: That's why you called us here?!

She pulled her hair back and sighed angrily: I'm angry! Isn't it enough that I hear lies everywhere since I came to this country!

Jan: Is that why you laughed every time you looked at me?!

Mark smiled, "I can't be beaten alone."

She sat on her bed tired, so Mark approached her worried: Are you okay?

She said angrily: Get away from me!

Jan advanced, saying: What happened that night was nothing but a fabricated plan, we were ambushed, and they drove the car, so that you would be fooled into thinking that we left you and went.

She said: A fabricated plan!

He said, "Yes."

Mark looked at her and quoted her sarcastically, "We have to trust each other if we're going to work together."

They turned to him in astonishment, and he said in a sharp tone: This is what I said after I questioned you as a suspect, I can't believe you questioned me.

She coughed and said: I was kidnapped and when I saw your car leaving, I couldn't help but think like that. Because everyone has been lying to me since I arrived, I thought ...

Mark interrupted her: I've already promised you, and I'm not someone who breaks his promises.

She looked at him and smiled, then said to them: I am sorry for hitting you both.

Jan: What's the important thing that you mentioned on the phone?

She replied in a serious tone: It's about whoever we found in the care center, it's not my father Max.

They looked at each other and then Jan said: We doubted this too.

She was surprised: Really! At first, I thought he really was my father, but when I visited him the second time, he told me about the center and...

Jan interrupted her: Wait! He talked to you. I thought he was in a coma.

She replied: That's what I thought too, but he waited until we were alone and then he told me that he was being held in the center and needed help, I wanted to tell you but that ... I mean Jane called me.

Jan: And right after that you were kidnapped.

She nodded, then Mark said, "He's going to put the pieces together until we get the big picture."

Jan: Where is he now?

They went to his room, and found him lying, Mark asked her: Are you sure he spoke to you?

She stares at him, then he says: Don't look at me like this! I just want to be sure.

She approached him and said, "Mr. Art, it's me, Sarah. You can open your eyes."

They stared at him for a few minutes, then he opened his eyes, and Mark said, "Oh my God! He is moving!

Jan pokes at him and says sharply, "CUT IT OUT! you're embarrassing me."

They approached him and introduced themselves and then sat down on his left side after they helped him to sit down. She sat on the right side and said: Mr. Art, tell them what you told me this morning.

He turned to her and said in a calm tone, "First of all, I must tell you something, miss. My name is not Art, but Dan."

Their expressions were steady as if they were expecting this, Mark said: This explains why Mr. Tan didn't say anything about it.

Dan looked at him: Mr. Tan? This man is my little brother's friend, Art, he used to follow him everywhere, I told him so many times that he was nothing but a cheat and a bad friend, but he didn't hear my words.

Jan: Mr. Dan, can you tell us what really happened over the past years?

He took a deep breath and then answered: It all started in 2012 when my little daughter Mary found out about the nature of her sister's work Jane.

He added: I didn't know what happened to my father-in-law or my two daughters, until Jane herself came and told me that everyone lived happily, I needed treatment so I couldn't be sure. She would visit me every week and bring good news, but I soon found out that she was lying, making me think my family was still fine.

His tears fell and she took his hand and smiled, saying: Mr. Dan, your daughter Mary is alive, and she is in this hospital too.

He looked at her with tears in his eyes: Are you sure?

She nodded, and Mark said, "Sarah was the one who saved her."

He said to her: Oh, Miss! How can I express my gratitude to you.

She smiled with tears in her eyes: It's fine, I can understand your feelings Mr. Dan. What happened to you was not fair, your family was separated because of greed and covetousness.
