"This is beautiful," Annie said in awe.
"Yeah?" Andy arched his eyebrow.
"Very."
"Well, I'm glad you like it."
The sight she saw was breathtaking. There was a sizeable river lined with dozens of trees just enough to cast shadows over the calm black water. The glint of sunlight that peeked through the clouds made the slight rippling waves sparkled like liquid diamonds. She could see a huge platform far off in the distance extending out into waters where two small canoes floated.
And so much greenery. Annie inhaled a deep breath. Everywhere she looked it was lush and natural, pockets of forests scattered among the small cabin.
"Come on, let us go in." With a hand on her lower back, Andy led her towards the porch. With a flick of his wrist, he pushed the heavy door open.
"Don't you lock your doors?" She looked up at him in confusion.
"Nope," he smiled. "No need."
"If you say so, big guy. But, from today we will keep it locked."
"Whatever rocks your boat, but we're safe here."
"It's better to be safe than sorry," she mumbled. And she would not jeopardize their safety with an unlocked door. "It has a lock, right? A deadbolt?"
"Yeah, might be rusty, but it should be working."
The creepy feeling might be still lingering at the back of her mind, and she was on the verge of being paranoid, but...
"Annie, look at me." Andy rubbed gently on her lower back; his familiar warmth seeping deep into her bones.
She resisted the urge to relax into his hold. Annie shifted a drooling Reon, so he was between them when Andy turned her so she faced him.
Andy focused his gaze on Annie's beautiful face. God. When she lifted those long, dark eyelashes and looked up at him over the baby's head, he nearly lost his breath. Big dark brown eyes looked up at him in innocence and fear. Using his pinky finger, he brushed an escaping curl from her eyes. "Don't get nervous on me, we'll get through this. Together, okay?"
Her deep pink lips parted, and he nearly swallowed his tongue. God help him, he wanted to kiss her. He wanted to taste every inch, every-
"Yes."
He heard her whispered the words, but for the life of him, he couldn't take his eyes from her mouth. Time seemed to stop when he tore his eyes from her lips and looked into her eyes. The heat in her eyes mirrored his own.
Cupping her smooth chin, he leaned in as though his body had a mind of its own. He felt her body grew still, but the fire in her eyes ignited. She wanted him too. A flash of need zinged through his body at the realization.
His mouth was just an inch from hers, he could almost taste her. For a split second, he wondered what she would taste like. Mint? Wildflowers? Strawberries? A mixture of each? His stomach gave a wild dip and his heart pounded when her soft rose petals lips brushed his.
Reon let out a wail, and that jerked them apart. Their noses bumped as he quickly removed his hands from her face.
He'd forgotten where they were; out in the open. God. He was acting like a randy teenager with his first crush. For Christ's sake, they had a kid together.
Clearing his throat, he said, "I'm sorry, let me get you guys settled down."
Jaysus Christ. Annie had to uncurl her toes in her shoes, her heart was pounding so hard it's a wonder Andy didn't hear it. Her insides almost melted when their lips had touched. Jeeze.
Unbearable heat had pooled in her nether region, she had to be sizzling. Just one touch and she was almost up in flames.
Reon let out another wail. It was like a bucket of ice water on an open fire. Shaking her head, she smiled at her son.
"Mama," he called. His little eyes were heavy with tears.
"Yes, baby?"
He released a string of baby language as tears finally gushed from his eyes.
"Mama's sorry, sweetheart." She placed a kiss on his forehead and rocked him a little.
"What's wrong," Andy asked; worry etched in his face.
She could not look at him yet. Her cheeks would go up in smoke if she did. "He's hungry."
"Oh." Andy moved in closer, he placed a kiss on Reon's curls. "My little man's hungry?"
Annie smiled when Reon spun around at his father's voice. He looked at his father then at her.
"Mama," he said again and his face crumpled.
"I'll bring the things from the car, you guys go in."
Annie nodded and stepped into the place. She didn't have much time to look around because Reon's wails grew louder. She felt like a bad mother. Sighing, she followed the short hallway in search of a kitchen.
Footsteps echoed as Andy brought the bag into the kitchen. He didn't stick around; he placed the bag onto the wooden countertop and left.
Annie hurriedly made a bottle for Reon the best way she could with one arm.
A long sigh burst from her lips when the sound of his mouth suckling on the nipple of the bottle filled the silence. She was such a bad mother, she almost starved her baby. She quickly swiped the tear marks from his face.
Later when she settled in, she would prepare something solid for him. Now, she had to get familiar with the place. Her eyes scanned the small kitchen: wooden white cupboards lined the walls, top, and bottom. A small wooden stove nestled in the corner near a small sink. Wooden spoons and metal pots hung on hooks nailed to the wall. A small island with another sink sat in the kitchen's center.
Despite the unfamiliar surroundings, she felt at home.
She followed where she came through to get back into the hallway. As she approached the living room, she heard Andy's voice. He was on the phone.
She looked around the room, taking in everything. A comfy looking couch sat in front of a massive fireplace. And a huge patchwork rug covered the floor, it was so soft, Annie almost sank her weary body into it.
From the corner of her eyes, she saw Andy pointing toward a doorway, probably the bedroom. When she looked down, she saw Reon was fast asleep, the empty bottle was forgotten.
Annie made a beeline for the bedroom. She pushed the door open to a freshly made bed, and a dresser pressed in a corner. Not a speck of dust anywhere which was surprising. She'd have to ask Andy about the cleanliness of the place later.
She smiled when she saw her bags sitting on the foot of the bed. Annie quickly rummaged through the diaper bag for a blanket.
****
It was late in the afternoon after they had gotten themselves settled in. She'd taken a bath before cooking lunch. Unpacked their bags and now she was curled up on the couch next to Andy as they talked. While Reon was fast asleep in the bedroom.
He'd told he called Kyle and his parents earlier. She didn't want to hear about Kyle or his parents just yet so she'd changed the subject.
"You okay?" he asked nudging her shoulder.
"Yep, I'm fine," She gave him a tiny smile as she eyed his still damped hair.
An awkward silence passed between. She opened her mouth to ask him where exactly they were and if he told anybody, but his phone rang that same time.
"Hello?" Andy answered and leaned forward. "Oh, hi Gregg."
Annie was all ears now. Her heart sped up for a second and her eyes went to the room where their son slept for a moment.
"We're okay," he paused and listened for a moment.
Annie almost fell off the couch when he raised his voice.
"What do you mean the man who attacked me is part of a gang?"
What the hell? Gangs?
"No, I've had no dealings with gangs. What do you mean he's dead?"
"Why-" he paused again.
"Okay, call me back if you find anything more."
Andy clicked off the phone and leaned back into the couch. Nobody said a word, and the silence was killing her. When his eyes met hers, she realized they both had the same thoughts. This was more violent and unpredictable now they know it involved gangs.
"What are-"
"No matter what," he said cutting her off, even though he knew it scared her. "I will protect you and our son with my life, he vowed."
He hugged her close and as she laid her head against his beating heart; she begged God to protect them.
If only it was that easy.
*****
The day ended without another call from Gregg. Maybe he found nothing else, Annie thought as she made her way back into the living room. Reon had woken up once, and she'd rocked him back to sleep. Annie was grateful he slept most of the day. God knows she needed it.
She found Andy pacing back and forth in front of the fireplace.
Oh, no. Something was bothering him.
He must have heard her walked in because he looked up and asked, "Is he asleep?"
"Yes."
"Annie?" his tone was soft and somewhat pain-filled.
"I need you-no, I want you."
This time his words were bold; it carried strength, the strength she needed right now.
It was as if he knew what she wanted. What she craved.
Annie wasn't sure how she ended up in his arms. All she knew was that she wanted to be right there, soaked in his warmness. As she looked up into the passion sparkling in his eyes, she felt drawn to him like how she'd been before. Her body ached to be in his arms. The heat started from her shoulders the traveled down igniting every sensitive cell in her passion-filled body.
She ran trembling hands down his face, needing him, wanting him as she always had.
