Side Story 22: Debutante (V)
âWell. I donât know.â
âLook closely.â
ââ¦Your Majesty, I am a very objective and fair person.â
Wanting to say something, the emperorâs right eyebrow twitched up.
âIn my opinion, my daughter is much more precious.â
â¦How could it be objective and fair.
The emperor was astounded by Deheenâs cold remarks, but he did not express his thoughts and agreed.
âOf course, I think so too. Sheâs such a lovely daughter, and no matter who she takes, you wonât be able to accept.â
âYes. Iâm not saying this because sheâs my daughter, but sheâs different from kids these days. Not to mention her good character, isnât her ability outstanding?â
âOf course. I will never forget the fact that the empire is still alive thanks to that childâs hard work.â
As the emperor lifted Esther up, the cold expression on Deheenâs expression eased little by little.
âIâm not saying this because he is my son, but Noah isnât a person who fell out of nowhere either.â
ââ¦â¦.â
âArenât you curious how adorable the grandchildren born by those children will be?â
Deheen shook his head in astonishment at the word âgrandchildrenâ, which came out as naturally as flowing water.
âYouâre getting ahead of yourself in front of kids who have just reached adulthood.â
âI heard that the two are officially dating. Itâs not strange for them to have marriage in mind.â
âWhat I gave permission for is dating, not marriage.â
âHow can parents block the will of children who have already reached adulthood?â
Recognizing the emperorâs intention to subtly promote the marriage, Deheen gripped the glass tightly.
âEsther probably doesnât want to get married yet. So grandchildrenâ¦â
As he was speaking bluntly, he suddenly thought of a granddaughter who looked just like Esther, and his mouth blankly remained open.
âWhat about grandchildren?â
âHmm.â
After a few secondsâ¦
Unconsciously, he covered his lips, of which the corners were already stretched to his ears, and forced the smile away, but the emperor had already seen it.
The emperor lightly bumped the wine glass he was holding against Dehenâs glass and calmly proposed.
âHow about having a meal together after this debutante? Letâs talk with the whole family.â
Then, in a blunt tone, Deheen dropped a bomb.
âYour Majesty, I want to have a son-in-law.â
ââ¦Huh?â
Since it was impossible to send the crown prince to the grand duchyâs son-in-law, the emperor was conflicted for the first time and mindlessly touched his chin.
âThatâs difficult, but how about having the Grand Dukeâs family come into the imperial palace and live together?â
âHmm.â
Deheen was seriously contemplating the emperorâs proposal, but suddenly came to his senses as to why he was thinking about this.
âThis discussion is too early. Just because they are dating doesnât mean they are getting married. Kids these days are different from our time.â
âWell, perhaps. I just said it because I liked seeing them together.â
When the emperor quietly withdrew, the empress came to his aid.
âShe is a very lovely child. Our Noah must have fallen in love with her because she resembles the Grand Duke, being wise, clever, and even dignified.â
Itâs fun to brag about oneâs own children, but praising anotherâs children was even more enjoyable.
As the empress continued to praise Esther, Deheenâs eyes became more proud.
Noticing the change, the emperor joined in the praising, refilling Deheenâs empty cup.
Before he knew it, Deheenâs heart opened. While observing Esther, who seemed to be enjoying herself, Deheen slowly said,
âI think a meal will be fine. Set a date for next weekâ¦â
Just then, the music stopped.
And Deheen could clearly see Noah kissing the back of Estherâs hand just before they were about to step off the stage.
Enraged, Deheen poured the wine he was holding into his mouth.
ââ¦No, I canât.â
Seeing that figure, the emperor and empress exchanged glances and shrugged.
âI guess we were in too much of a hurry.â
âI heard that the grand dukeâs love for his daughter is tremendous. Itâs going to be hard to push.â
The emperor changed his plans, to slowly take time with the empress.
Then he poured wine into the half-empty glasses.
Deheen, the emperor, and the empress each raised their glasses.
âToday, letâs just celebrate our children, who have come of age safely.â
ââ¦All right, Your Majesty.â
âThen Iâll do the toast. For the love of both families.â
Choked up again by the empressâ declaration, Deheen downed his wine.
It appeared there was still a long way to go, but the harmony between the two families would naturally resolve over time.
â â â
At the back of the Blue Sapphire Hall where the debutante was being heldâ¦
In a corner of this place where only tables were set and no one was there, a large man crouched down and rubbed his nose, sniffing.
âDo it, donât do it, do it, donât do itâ¦â
The way he was muttering strange things to himself made him look like a madman.
âWhat are you talking about?â
Dennis, who came here to quietly read a book, was startled by a strange noise coming from the corner.
Sneaking up to investigate, it turned out it was a person he knew well.
âSebastian?â
Surprised, he ran off and returned with Judy.
âSebastian is over there.â
âWhat? No way. You must have seen something wrong.â
âReally. Check it out for yourself.â
Judy, who didnât believe Dennisâ words, couldnât hide his embarrassment when he saw the actual Sebastian.
ââ¦What. Why is he here? And why is he like this?â
âHis condition is a bit strange.â
âI will go and find out.â
With narrowed eyes, Judy walked straight to Sebastianâs front.
âHey.â
ââ¦â¦.â
âWhy are you not answering? Itâs me, Judy.â
ââ¦â¦.â
âWhy are you here? There is no one in your family who can participate in the debutante.â
âDonât talk to me. Iâm serious.â
Judy sat down beside Sebastian, who exuded a gloomy vibe.
âHow strange. Somehow Iâm not unfamiliar with this. I have a feeling of déjà vu, like I had been through the same situation one dayâ¦â
As a result of Judyâs barrage of questions, Sebastian finally managed to open his mouth.
âI came to see Esther. I really want to see her debut.â
âDo you still like my sister?â
âI donât want to like her either, but I canât find someone better than her?â
âOh my.â
Judy gave Sebastian a look of sympathy and put his arm around Sebastianâs neck as if to force him to come to his senses.
âThatâs why you should have been nice when you two first met.â
âHaha, I was thinking of confessing, but Iâm just going to fold neatly. I think I should stop my unrequited love now.â
âGood idea. Esther is going out with the crown prince.â
âI knew it when I saw them today.â
With wounded eyes, Sebastian asked in a somber voice.
âAre you okay? You are the ones who cherished Esther the most.â
âHmmâ¦â
Judy jumped up and took a can of beer from the table.
He swallowed half in one gulp and said bitterly.
âAs long as Esther is happy.â
âWow, did you grow up?â
âSebastian, are you messing with me?â
Judy and Sebastian, who threw empty sharp remarks, clashed their beer cans with melancholic faces.
Dennis joined in as well.
âWhat brings you here? Youâre not reading?â
âIâve stopped reading today. See, Iâve closed the book.â
âYou only drink water. This is alcohol, is it okay?â
âToday I want to drink too.â
The twins accepted Noah, but their upset feelings did not disappear even after time passed.
ââ¦You too, cheer up.â
Thatâs how Judy, Dennis, and Sebastianâs gloomy drinking party began in a corner of the hall that was hard to spot.
â â â
The debutante party was getting hotter and hotter.
Esther, who was having a good time, suddenly felt a strong divine power.
âThis should be an elderâs level. Who is it?â
Just in case there was any unexpected issue, she wandered around the hall looking for the owner of that divine power.
Then she noticed someone watching her from the window by the balcony.
The person, who had the hood tightly pulled, ran out of the hall as if escaping when their eyes met Estherâs.
Esther put down the plate she was holding and quickly followed.
The person was surprisingly fast. They were no longer in the hallway, but luckily, Esther found them in the garden.
âWait! Stop there.â
The person paused when they heard Estherâs voice.
ââ¦Right? Sharon.â
ââ¦â¦.â
âDonât even think about lying.â
Sharon sighed and turned around, knowing that she had already been caught.
âLong time no see.â
âWhen are you back?â
âThis morning. Itâs this old womanâs desire to see you come of age.â
Sharonâs calm voice trembled slightly before finding its usual tone.
âCongratulations on coming of age. Itâs very nice to see you happy. I have no regrets now.â
Esther let out a sigh and moved closer to Sharon, pulling off the hood.
The face of Sharon she saw after four years did not change. On the contrary, her eyes became clearer and she did not feel her age.
âThen why did you run away from me? I almost didnât even know you came.â
âBecause I donât deserve it.â
Sharon said that she would live with a heart of atonement for the rest of her life, and she kept it unchanged.
ââ¦Wonât you go back to the temple? Everyone is waiting for you, Sharon.â
âThey are waiting for the saint, not me. There are still many who believe that the temple can make a comeback. If I go back, they will have false hopes.â
âWhich is why, even more so, we have to deal with it. It seems that you are the only one who can change such a temple.â
After the elders, high priests, and other priests who had followed Rabienne were all cut off, the temple barely survived.
As she watched such a temple for the past four years, Esther thought a lot.
It didnât matter if the authority of the temple was reduced, but as long as there was a barrier, the temple was needed for the safety of the empire.
Esther had no intention of returning to the temple, so someone was needed to properly look after it.
Sharon, who was an elder from the previous generation and knew everything, was the most suitable person.
âI think four years is enough time for atonement. Sharon, you didnât know about the corruption either. From now on, please look after the temple and find a successor.â
ââ¦All right. If you wish, I will go back and use the time I have left for the temple.â
âYou have to make the people of the temple aware of the fact that I will never go back. They have to give it up.â
âAh, donât worry. Even if I donât say anything, after today, the story of the saintâs return to the temple will naturally disappear.â
Esther and Sharon chatted and filled the gap of four years little by little.
âOh, arenât you curious about how Rabienneâs is doing?â
Esther gasped in surprise at the long-forgotten name.
âDid you hear something?ân/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
Esther didnât look for Rabienne after the public trial to avoid further entanglement, but when she heard her name, she became curious about her current situation.
Ame: oh⦠Rabienneâ¦
