Chapter Twenty Four

I gasp for air. My body felt hot all over. These sheets were suffocating. I hastily throw them off but end up falling off the bed and hitting hard—I hear a groan—something alive.

“Ow.” Jesse says from underneath me. Everything was still black, so I am still blind.

“I’m so sorry, Jesse. Man, I’ve got to stop falling out of bed.” I get up and sit down on the bed. “Why are you on the floor?” I ask.

“Well, we are in a nunnery after all. So everyone has to show proper Christian behavior. And two unwedded people of the different sex sleeping in the same bed isn’t exactly proper Christian behavior.” He explains.

“Makes sense.” I respond. It was nice of him to take the floor instead of going into another bedroom.

“Sister Beth wanted me to tell you when you woke up that you’re moving to another room.” He says.

“What’s wrong with this one?”

“Well, you’re in the hospital part of the convent. I think the bedrooms would better suit you.” I nod and stand up. I start walking forward, but am stop when I run into something hard. I bang my foot and my elbow.

“Yep, no walking by yourself just yet.” Jesse says and then helps me out of the room. “Sister Beth! Athena is awake now!” Jesse yells. We walk a little more down the hallway until I hear the elderly voice—who I guess is Sister Beth—respond.

“Oh good, well follow me.” Jesse guides me to the path of Sister Beth. After a few silent minutes, we stop. “Well this is going to be Athena’s room.” Sister Beth says. I feel a hand pull me from Jesse’s grip.

“You can go now Jesse. I can take it from here.” Sister Beth says and then pulls me into my new room.

“My name is Sister Beth, if you didn’t already know that. I’ve been living in this convent for all my life, so if you need help with anything just call for me and I’ll be here as soon as my arthritis infected legs can carry me. I know about your situation, well I know as much as Kyle told me.”

“Wait, how did Kyle tell you?” I ask.

“Kyle has been coming here almost every night for the past few months now. Hasn’t he told you?” Sister Beth asks.

“Told me what?”

“That he…well maybe I shouldn’t be the one to explain it,” She says. Explain what? What is Kyle keeping from me? “Anyway I have to go tend so other matters, so if you need anything call me or one of the other Sisters.” She finishes, then I hear the door shut. Wow, she just left me like this. I don’t even know where the bed is.

I walk a few steps and then fall onto something cushiony, I guess I found the bed. I groan and get all the way on the bed. Why must things like this happen to me?

Kyle is going have to do some major explaining, though. I knew that he was keeping where he was going away from me, but I never suspected that he would be coming to a nunnery. This is so confusing.

I close my eyes and dream of better days.

I got into a lot of trouble because of what I did to the walls. I got yelled at by the guards and got a week without going to the commons. But that week has past and so has many other weeks. It’s been about three months since I’ve been here. It’s gotten easier. I’ve finally accepted that I have a mental problem and the doctor said that was a step closer to getting out of here.

But the problem is that if I get out of here, then I’m going to jail for about the rest of my life, if not the rest of my life. So my best bet is to keep being crazy.

Another problem is that I don’t believe in any of this bullshit that the doctors have been feeding me.

I’ve become pretty good friends with Jay, also. I’ve learned not to tell people about my other life. The real one. Jay also told me about why he was in here. He also was seeing ghost and talking to them too. His mom got really worried and sent him to a doctor. They diagnosed him with schizophrenia. One day when he was in his room, he saw a ghost and started to get hostile. He kept telling it to go away because he wanted to believe he wasn’t crazy. When his little sister came up to his room and asked him to come play with her, he knocked her down on accident. She hit her head hard enough that she got a concussion and had to be hospitalized for a week. His mom sent him here so he wouldn’t do anymore damage to the family.

I never told him why I was in here. I think he just assumed that I was sent here along the lines and why he was sent here for.

So now I’m in the commons waiting for Jay to get here. I was reading some book that was “approved” for me to read. I have to get everything approved before I can do anything.

I feel the cushion on the couch sink next to me. I look up from my book and see the creepy smiling face of Jay staring at me. “May I help you?” I ask. With that face he’s giving me, I feel like he’s going to murder me.

Jay nods. “Let’s break out of here.” He says with so much excitement.

“Wh-What!? You can’t be serious!” I whisper-yell. But he just nods.

“Yes! Come on, we can do it! You really don’t want to stay here for the rest of your life do you? I’ll be out in a few years, but I over-heard the doctors talking, and they said that you might be here the rest of your life. Do you really want to stay here for the rest of your life, or do you want to be free?” He asks.

“We can’t escape! This is a high-security institute, how are we ever going to get out of here?”

“I’ve got a plan. This place isn’t as ‘high security’ as they say it is. The cameras are just there for decoration. They don’t even work! All we have to do is get past the guards and the gate, and I have a plan for that.”

I look away from Jay and at the muscular guards standing at all the door ways. Could I really get past two-hundred pound guards? I don’t have a lot of faith in that.

“I don’t know—“

“You can’t really be undecided! We have a chance to be free! We can escape from the people who think we are insane. We can have a real life and we can go back to our families.”

“I don’t have a family to go back to.” I say in a curt tone. Jay looks surprised for a moment and then goes back to him smile.

“That doesn’t matter; we can have our own family. Just please, run away with me. I can’t do this myself.” He says pleadingly. I think for a moment. What do I have to lose?

“When do you plan on leaving?”

“Three months from now. That would be enough time to get the doctors full trust; and enough time to plan everything out thoroughly.” Jay smiles bright and takes my hand in his.

I just nod.

When I awake from my nap, I feel the presence of someone staring at me. “Ah! Oh my god!” I say jumping off the bed and onto the floor for the second time today.

“We have to talk.” Kyle says and then sits down on the bed. I feel the bedside and lift myself up.

“Okay, cool. But that doesn’t mean that you have to stare at me while I sleep!” I raise my voice. I can practically hear Kyle roll his eyes.

“We need to talk about me.” He says and then stops. “I’ve been withholding information about my whereabouts for the past few months. So now is good time to tell you the truth. Just keep in mind it was really hard to keep this from you, even though I can be a jerk sometimes, you are still my best friend and I love you.

“I’m in love…” Kyle says. Well, I didn’t expect that. “…with a nun.”

“Um…wow.”

“I know.”

“Aren’t nuns supposed to not have relationships? Isn’t that whole point of being a nun?” I ask.

“Not really, but kind of. Almost every night I have been coming here just to see her. I don’t know how it happened, but it just did and now I’m in love. She’s just so perfect and I don’t know what to do.”

“Wow.”

“I know.”

“And why did you take us here?” I ask, trying to processes this information. My best friend is finally in love.

“Well since the other sisters here know about our predicament, and I’ve talked a lot to the elder sisters. I’ve told them about what was happening with you and you situation. So the elders agreed if you ever needed their help then all you have to do is come here. Thus is why you here.” He explains.

“You are like the bestest friend ever for taking me here. That was smart; well besides keeping from me THAT YOU’VE BEEN IN LOVE FOR MONTHS NOW!” I yell and then hit Kyle in what I think is his arm.

“Ow! I’m sorry. It was really hard keeping this from you, but I felt like it wasn’t just right to tell you until now.” He apologizes, but I already forgave him before he apologized.

“So what’s her name?”

“Delilah…” Kyle says dreamily. This Kyle is going to take some getting used to.

“Like Samson and Delilah…I get it because she’s a nun.” I laugh a little at my own joke.

“Yes, Athena. She’s a nun; she’s going to have a name from the bible.” Kyle says slowly. I have the urge to hit him again.

“So how old is she?”

“Sixteen, but I think that’s enough questions for now. How about we talk about what’s going on with you? Going crazy much?” He turns the questioning on me.

“I don’t know honestly. I rather not explain it into I know what to explain; and being blind isn’t helping me much either.” I rub my hands over my face.

I feel Kyle put his hand on my back. “Well if it helps you any, we both have damned love lives! Okay, well maybe not. But if ever need someone you have me and the blonde pest.” Kyle offers. It is apparent that he still doesn’t like Jesse.

“He’s not the blonde pest, Kyle.”

“Then what is he?”

“I don’t know.” I say truthfully. I knew what Kyle meant, if we were together or not.

“He’s your little blonde pest boyfriend, isn’t he?” Kyle says, I can hear his smirk.

“Ugh, shut up Kyle.” I say hitting him again in his arm.

“Okay, okay I’ll stop. Just don’t hit me again, you’re really strong.” He says with playful pain in his voice.

Bonding with my best friend again was always the best, until I suddenly pass out.

“You’ve got to stop doing that.” Emery says when I wake up on top of him. I groan and get up.

“What happen?” I ask rubbing my hurting head.

“You passed out and fell on me. Not that I’m complaining, but it just took me by surprise.”

“How long was I out?”

“About five minutes. But that doesn’t matter now; I have to get you ready for dinner.” He says and then rushes me up to the room I’m staying in.

“Dinner?”

“You know the last meal of the day.” Emery says while going through the closet full of big dresses.

“I know what dinner is, but why do I have to prepare for it?” I ask walking over to Emery who was still looking for something.

“Because very important people are going to be there, and we have to dress to impress.” Emery pulls out a dress that looked like the 1700’s needed it back. “This will do.”

“I have to wear that thing?” I ask with disgust.

“Yeah, so deal with it and go put it on. I’m not going to make you wear a corset, but you’ll be expected to wear one in the future.” He pushes me into the bathroom of the bedroom and closes the door. “Hurry up!” He says.

Corset? There was no way that I was ever going to wear a corset. I hurry up and put on the godforsaken dress. It was so complicated to get on. There was so much fabric and not enough of me. When I finally get the dress on with my all my extremities in the right place, I look at myself in the full length mirror.

I looked stupid with this dress on but that’s not the thing that caught my attention. My hair ended at the bottom of my shoulder blades, the length of my hair after it caught on fire.

“Are you almost done? We have to go soon.” Emery yells. I open the bathroom door and Emery smiles.

“You look stupid.” He says laughing a bit.

“I know.”

“Servant twenty three!” Emery calls. A young girl rushes in the room and bows. “Yes master?”

“Make her look presentable for the royals.” He commands the girl.

“Yes, master.” She says. Emery leaves the room and the girl gets up from her bow. She walks over to me and starts to brush my hair. Her hands shake every time she brings the brush down.

“I’m sorry if I hurt you.” She says in a small voice.

“Who are you?” I ask the frighten girl.

“Servant twenty three.” She says in a shaken voice. I furrow my brows.

“What’s your name?”

“Servant twenty three.” She answers still frighten.

“No, what’s your real name?”

“That is my real name.”

After about thirty minutes of hair and face preparation Emery came back up and dismissed servant twenty three. “Are you ready to go down?” Emery asks.

“No.”

“Too bad, let’s go.” Emery grabs my hand and lifts me up from the bed. He takes me down a flight of stairs with his arm around my shoulders, keeping me in place. We reach the bottom of the stairs and we walk into the dining room together.

About twenty faces look our way. Every face was beautiful and flawless. Every person—or should I say demon—look snide and cold. Mostly everyone in the room smirks at me. All eyes are hateful and curious. Not good mix.

“So this is her, Lucifer? She’s beautiful little thing.” Says a woman who stood up and walked over to me while speaking. She grabs my jaw with her long finger nails that dig into my face. “So young and innocent.”

Emery pushes her off of me. The woman just smirks. “Yes, and that is why she is mine.” Says Lucifer. He sits at the very end of the table. He has the biggest and most elegant chair in the room.

I look around the room once more and find the woman who pretended to be my mother.

“What is she doing here?” I ask Emery in a whisper. He just shrugs, “She’s a royal.” He says.

“But why does she still look like my mother?” I whisper harshly.

“I don’t know, I guess she really likes your mother’s skin. Now let’s sit down.” Emery says and then sits me down opposite to Lucifer. Emery sits next to me.

There was already food on my plate and wine in my cup. The food consisted of meat and more meat. I didn’t know what meat it was, but I wasn’t taking my chances. And I wasn’t too sure that the wine was actually wine either. So I didn’t touch anything. All the “royals” were eating there meat like starved animals. It was really disgusting to watch.

While the royals ate with their hands and extremely sharp teeth, they also conversed about “royal business”.

My hands start to itch real badly, they also start to clench. This only could mean one thing, I need to draw now. I haven’t had the urge to draw since the drawing of Lucifer. And I didn’t have anything to draw with either. What bad timing.

My hand was aching so bad that I had gripped my thigh in order to get it to stop. My hand didn’t cooperate. My nails dig into my thigh hard enough that the fabric of my dress tares. I put my hand under my dress to prevent anymore dress tarring. My hand still grasps my bare thigh causing it to draw blood. My finger nails start to cut lines into my skin. I can’t stop my hand from doing it’s artwork, so I just try to block out the pain and pretend that nothing is happening.

For about five minutes my hand was doing non-stop drawing on my leg. I could feel blood start to stain my dress. But I just ignore it until my hand stops. Which when it does I ask where the bathroom is.

“Servant sixteen will show you.” Emery says. Another young frighten girl rushes over to me and says she’ll show me the bathroom. She leads me to a big bathroom and then leaves quickly. I rush into the bathroom and lift up the skirt of the dress. My whole thigh was a bloody mess. I take the hand drying towel (which looked to be priceless) and wet it in the sink. I gently wipe the blood off my thigh (which really sung a lot). After a few minutes of torcher trying to get the blood off I finally get to see the picture that my hand was desperate to draw.

It was a big cup. The inside of the cup were filled with my blood. At the center of the outside of the cup was a diamond shape thing. I didn’t know what this cup meant, but I hand a feeling that it was important.
