Chapter Twenty Six
My headâs bent down, I shudder in disgust. I just recently threw up all the contents in my weak stomachâagain. It's been happening all day. This is the fourth time. I couldn't hold down anything, even water. By the second time I vomited, there was nothing left in my stomach to vomit with. But I guess now my body has found away.
"Are you okay dear?" Sister Marge asks. She had been sent by Sister Beth because Sister Beth had some things to attend to. She had been by my side the whole time I was being sick. I nod and flush the toilet, letting my stomach contents flush away. I feel light headed and nauseous now. Sister Marge was rubbing my back soothingly. I walk weakly to the sink and get out my toothbrush to brush my teeth again for the fourth time of the day. The only reason itâs so easy for me to navigate is because my feet have grown use to walking this route.
As I put the brush in my mouth to cleanse the bitter taste of stomach acid out. Sister Marge tells me she is going to the church and to call her if I get sick again. I nod and continue brushing. My hair is pulled back in a short ponytail so it could escape the sick. Sister Beth decided to cut the ragged ends that Kyle did with his knife. Itâs now a little longer than my shoulders. Iâm still not used to the length of it. I kind of miss the length of my long hair. But I like the new style of it. Itâs easier to deal with.
I spit the toothpaste out after I was done brushing and then rinse the toothbrush. I hear someone enter my room with urgency. The intruder came into the small bathroom and sighs. I put the toothbrush up and try to guess the presence of the strange.
"Athena! Are you okay? I've heard that you were violently sick and I got scared. It took forever to convince the Sisters to let me in your room after what Sister Elizabeth witness last night. But I had to see you!" Jesse speaks frantically. I almost blush remember what happened last night. It wasnât my fault that Sister Elizabethâs room was in the view of us.
I sigh and then nod. "But really, are you okay?" his voice was soft and caring. What did I do to deserve him?
"Jesse, I just don't know what's wrong with me. I'm so hungry, but I canât hold anything down. I'm glad you came to see me." I suddenly feel self-conscious; I probably smell gross.
"Come on, let's get you to bed." Jesse suggest. He picks me up bridal style and carries me to the full size bed that sat at the side of the room. He carefully tucks me in the bed. He was just caring about me. Why did he do all this for me?
"Do you want me to stay with you?" He asks. Of course I want him to stay with me! I didn't feel safe by myself. Not after what happened. I nod and signal him to lie down. I feel the weight of his body sit on the bed.
"What if this is meant to happen? Maybe itâs my time to die." I suggest. It was a good possibility that it was true. I really donât think God likes me too much anyway.
Jesse sighs. "I could be true or you could just have a bug that will blow over soon. Hopefully it's the ladder. I donât want you to die just when weâre on the brink of overcoming this chaos." He says sadly. I rub my hands over my eyes. Oh how conveniently it would be if I could see.
âI think Iâm losing my vision too. My eyes are almost as light as yours and I have to strain to see read anything.â Jesse says. I stiffen, this cannot be happening. If Iâm already blind, and if Jesse is going blind, then that meansâ¦
âWeâre going crazy.â I answer the silent question that hangs in the air.
âI know.â He says with a groan
âBut itâs really starting to happen now. I remember years ago my dad telling me that he was temporally blind for a few years. And now my dadâs mentally disable.â I recall the memory he told me years ago. He said he was about twenty when it had happen but it was over before he was twenty five.
âWell that sucks.â Jesse comments and groans. If I were in any other situation I would have had laughed at Jesseâs comment. But Iâm sick and blindânot a good mix.
âJust more reason to do the transfer sooner.â I mutter. I know that bring this up would bring up Emery, and bringing up Emery will equal to a-not-so-happy Jesse. So before Jesse can respond to my comment I ask a question that Iâve been dying to know the answer to since I had gotten that newspaper article.
âJesse are the people you live with really your parents?â I ask nervously. Hopefully donât trigger any anger or tears. I wouldnât know how to deal with either. But all I get from Jesse is a tired sigh.
âNo my parents died when I was seven. Found at Martinâs Dead Point with multiple stab wounds. I live are my Aunt and my Uncle, and well Milly whoâs my cousin but she thinks Iâm her actual brother. Which is kind of cool, Iâve always wanted a sister.â I feel bad for asking the question in the first place but I needed that answer.
âI think the person who killed my mom is the same person who murdered your parents.â I think out loud. Maybe that wasnât the best idea in hindsight. Jesse tenses and doesnât say anything.
âLook, I know how it feels. My mother was murdered in the same way your parents were, the same place also.â I say as sympathetic as I could, which wasnât much. I could tell by Jesseâs stiffening posturer that Iâm not helping any.
âHow about that weather?â Jesse says suddenly. I canât see the weather; I want to say but then decide not to make the situation more awkward than it already is.
âBut Jessie, Iââ
âWeâre changing the subject, Athena.â Jesse says sternly. Now I feel guilty for bringing it up. I sigh and close my eyes that I even didnât know I had opened. I move my hand to feel for Jesse. I think Iâve find his chest or his stomachâI canât really feel the difference
I move myself so that Iâm up against Jesse with my head on hisâhopefullyâshoulder. I sigh as he pulls my hair out of the ponytail. I start to drift off listening to his soothing heartbeat as he strokes my hair.
I wake up with a throat-hacking cough. I fall off the bed, get back up, and run for the bathroom that became my new found best friend for the day. I pull my hair out of my face and feel for the toilet. I canât believe that this is happening again for the fifth time today.
My body tries to throw up but all that comes up in dry heaves. I cough more and feel wetness on my arm where I have been coughing. My headâs pounding so hard I feel like itâs going to burst through my skull.
I guess Sister Marge had heard my cries because sheâs immediately by my side. I collapse into the poor woman with a groan. I feel like Iâm going to die any minute. âKillâ¦meâ¦â I choke out into her shoulder but she just laughs like Iâm actually joking.
âNo, no weâre not having any of that.â She says with glee. How could this woman be happy when I feel like Iâm about to spontaneously combust this instant? She lays me on the bed and hoist me up with multiple pillows.
âIs she alright!?â I hear my brotherâs voice ask urgently. Sister Marge sticks something in my mouth, which I assume a thermometer. The thermometer beeps and Sister Marge checks it.
âDear oh Dear looks like weâre going to make a trip to the hospital tonight. Miles, please tell Sister Beth to call Father Steve. Oh and get Kyle of Jesse in here also.â Sister Marge says with urgency. What temperature could the thermometer have had read for Sister Marge in need of the Preacher?
I would have asked but I couldnât move anything. I think about what could have caused this sickness, but nothing came up. I didnât think I was eating any weird foreign foods that could cause food poising.
âWhatâs wrong with Athena!?â Jesseâs voice booms through the room. I almost smile because of his presences. How disgusting Iâm becoming. I always thought I would never be one of those girls who were obsessed with romance and love. I donât really think I believe in love.
âI really donât know but with a fever of hundred-and-seven I think we need to go to the hospital.â Sister Marge replies. A HUNDRED-AND-SEVEN! My brain could fry that! I start to panic; the possibility of me living is almost none. âI need you and Kyle to help me get Athena into Father Steveâs car. Where is Kyle anyway?â Sister Marge asks.
âHeâs with DelilâSister Delilah. He said heâll be down in a few minutes.â Jesseâs voice seems panicky. I want to get up and comfort him but Iâm stuck.
âThat boyâ¦â I hear Sister Beth mutter. I almost laugh at how whipped Kyle already is. I feel arms pick me up and cradle me.
âAthena are you okay?â Jesse asks with concern and worry. I lay into his shoulder and sigh.
âJust a little under the weather.â I manage to get out. It hurts to speak from the acid that burnt my throat but I deal with the pain. Jesse chuckles as he carries me. I start to doze off until when Jesse shakes me.
âI think it would be best if you donât sleep at this moment. You never know what could happen in your sleep.â Jesse says shakily but tries to hide it with a fake laugh. I know what he meant though; he didnât want me to die in my sleep. I feel myself being sat down into a cold seat. I cough in my arm again and feel the same wetness.
âYouâre coughing up blood!â I hear Miles yell. I realize Iâm in a car when the engine starts to roar and the driver puts their foot on the gas. Someone grabs my arm and I make no move to stop them. I couldnât move anyway. Iâm too weak to do anything but fade in and out of consciousness.
âWell shit.â Kyle mutters. Since when did Kyle get in the car? I donât remember anything it seems.
âLanguage!â The male driver scolds at Kyle. Kyle ignores him as he wipes the blood with something cold and wet, well I guess itâs Kyle. I shiver violently. It must be the effects of the fever coming through.
âOh my godâ¦â I here Jesse groan. The driver scolds Jesse for using the Lordâs name in vain. I shiver and huddle up to the person who is closer to me, Kyle. I keep shivering into Kyle whoâs wrapping his arms around me.
âGod, youâre so cold Athena.â He says and wraps something around me. I guess itâs either a jacket or a blanket but I did me nothing good, I still feel like an iceberg. I feel warm hands pull me from Kyleâs body and I shook violently from the loss of warmth. That is until Iâm pulled into another personâs body.
âIâve got this from here.â Jesse says curtly to Kyle. This is no time for jealousy, Jesse, I want to say but my throat wouldnât comply. I huddle closer to him and this time actually feel a difference in my body heat, even if itâs slight. I squeeze closer to Jesse and hold him tightly. Sweat forms on my body as I still shake. How could I be shivering and sweating at the same time? When are we going to get to this damn hospital?
âCan you drive faster please?â Miles asks with a slight attitude.
âWe wouldnât want another car crash, now would we? Weâre almost to the hospital anyway, thereâs no need for extreme measures that could put our life in danger.â The driver says and then does a sharp turn. I try to pull closer to Jesse but I think thatâs impossible considering how close we already are. I still shake and sweat still forms. Iâm a sweaty, shivering, disgusting mess; oh how attractive I must be right now.
âWeâre here.â The driver announces. I cough violently again into my arm that Iâm barely able to move. Everyone gets out of the car in a hurry. I just bury my head into Jesse and wish for this to be over; even if it means death.
When we enter the hospital Iâm put into a gurney and rushed down the hospital hallway. The rest is a blur. I drift into my own dream world.
âMaâam, I have to ask you to stay awake, itâs too dangerous to sleep until we get you stabilized. Just please stay with us for a while longer.â An urgent voice instructs. I ignore the voice for disrupting me from my sleep. I shiver and cough at the same time, which Iâm sure caused me some internal damage seeing how much it hurt my lungs.
My eye lids are force open and a struggle to close them but Iâm too weak to. âPupils arenât dilated, drugs arenât affecting anything. But the pupil doesnât follow the lightâ¦â Another voice says. I wish that I could roll my eyes at this nurse/doctor.
âThe people who brought her here said sheâs blind.â A voice informs. Iâm going to pass out any minute. Iâve never been so close to death in my life except for that time that that lady tried to kill me.
âLet me in there!â A voice yells. I think itâs Jesse but I couldnât be sure because itâs too far away. Itâs getting harder to breathe for every breath I take.
It could have been the blood thatâs filling my lungs rapidly or the just the fact that Iâm giving up now.
âWhoâs that?â A voice above me asks.
âSome blonde boy who wants to see this girl. Says heâs her boyfriend or something.â A voice replies boredly.
âWe should probably let him. I know I would want to be there for my girlfriend when she takes her last breath.â
