Chapter Twenty Seven
Iâm getting tired of this shit. I really am. It has been a half a year since Iâve been in the hellhole. Jay has been nothing but nice to me and some of the workers have warmed up to me. The whole part of staying here isnât the problem.
Itâs the fact that I canât escape my mind.
Insanity has seeped its way into me and made a long term home there. Every night I think of things I shouldnât. Murder. Death. Blood. How good it would feel to have someoneâs blood on my hands. The rush of killing. The same rush I felt when I killed my mom, Miles, and Kyle. It felt so good and I canât even compare anything to the feel.
I wantâno, need to do it again, just for the high. No one knows of my secret addiction of course, if they did Iâd have to wear a nice jacket that disables the use of my arms. I wouldnât want that to happen because I wouldnât be able to feel the rush again.
Today is the day where Jay plans to escape. Weâve been going over his plan every day since he told me about it. I know all the details and steps by heart.
I leave my room and walk to the commons to meet Jay. He sits at the small round table with a square-folded paper in his hands. We are practically the only people in here, everyone else is sleeping. We had gained the guards trust enough that they left out doors unlocked at night and they let us in the commons late at night. It took a while but we managed it. So much for a maximum security mental institute.
âAre you ready, darling?â He asks with a smirk. But I could tell heâs nervous by his slight tremble of his voice. I sit down and nod. This is going to end tonight. We discuss the plan once more. We go over every step and move. The adrenalin is starting to pump into my veins as we discuss the last steps and finish the plan.
âGod, Iâm so ready.â I groan in pleasure of the thoughts of the aftermath. As long as I get to kill again Iâll be satisfied with any and every result. Jay reaches over and grabs my hands. I squeeze back. I feel like weâre Bonnie and Clyde.
âYouâre really ready for this arenât you? I guess Iâm ready also. I canât wait to eat actual food again.â Jesse says. I grin, Iâm so beyond ready.
We get up from out seats and Jay tucks the folded plan into his shirt. Itâs time to start step one of Plan: Escape from Red Oaks Maximum Security Mental Institute.
I move closer to Jay and pull him to me by his shoulders. I look into his violet eyes and sigh. I grab his shirt and my lips meet his. I kiss hard and so does Jay. We werenât doing this for affection though, just for attention.
âHey! You two! Stop it! You know thereâs no public affection in the commons!â A guard yells. I smile into the kiss and keep doing what Iâm doing. Itâs working! I pull Jay closer to me and run my fingers through his hair. Jay groans and grabs me by the waist.
âHey! I told you two to stop! Stop it before I break you two apart!â The guards instructs again but we keep ignoring him. The kiss gets deeper as I hear the guards footsteps get closer. Iâm yanked from Jay and I smile at the guard. This is going just as planned. I kick the guard in his male anatomy and punch him in the stomach. The guard groans and falls to the floor.
âOw!â I say shaking my aching fist. Jay grabs the guardâs keys and gun. Why did the guard have to carry around a gun? I didnât know but Iâm glad he did. Jay gives me the gun and we now head into step two.
We open the exit of the commons that lead into the reception hallway. We run when we hear the sirens go off. Guards start to run after us but we keep running until we reach the main doors that lead into the actual reception room. We close the doors behinds us and I jam the lock by hitting it with the gun. It would give us a few extra minutes from the guards.
Step three. I run behind the receptionist desk and knock out the receptionist who was already too stunned to see two rebel patients to do anything. Jay unlocks the door behind the desk. Thatâs the control room. No one is in there to my fortune. I turn the keys that controlled the power the other way so that they all are off. The lights turn off and so does the ear piercing alarm.
Something hits my side. I turn around and glare at the elderly woman whoâs hitting with me with a hardback book. âStop it! Help!â She screams. I try to restrain her arms from hitting me but she keeps flailing. I grab her old arms and push them behind her back. She manages to get one of her arms free from all the struggling. She hits me in the face.
Thatâs it bitch. I push her into the wall and draw my gun from my back. I aim the gun at her head. âNo please! Donât shoot! Please! Iâve got my grandchildren to take care of! Please donât shoot me! Please!â She cries out.
Well you should have thought about that before you attacked me.
I pull the trigger. She slides down the wall, unmoving. I smile at the feel I got. It tingles throughout my body like pleasant electricity. Who know murder could feel this great? The high of the feel gets me all jittery and happy. I feel I could do anything now. I run out from the control room to meet Jay who was waiting at the entrance doors.
âDid I just hear a gun shot?â He asks nervously looking at my right hand that held the handgun. I grin widely at the memory of the womanâs death. Her bloodâs probably on my clothes. I nod at Jay while grinning like I won the lottery.
âSome old woman got in my way.â I open the entrance doors and run into the security check room. I stare at the glass exit doors. Just a few more yards and Iâm free!
âThat doesnât mean that you had to kill her!â Jay exasperates, following behind me. Weirdly, no security people are in here, they must be all sleeping. This is way too easy. I ignore Jay and run towards the doors that lead out of Red Oaks Maximum Security Mental Institute. Jay follows behind me. Since the power is off the doors are no longer automatic. So we can leave through the doors without having someone letting us in.
I run out the doors and spin around at the feel of fresh air. I breathe deeply and almost drop to my knees at the feel of freedom.
âUhâ¦A-Athenaâ¦â Jay trembles at his words. I keep spinning around and breathe like Iâve never breathed before.
âYes Jay?â I chortle. I look at him and see the fear in his face. Whatâs he afraid of? Shouldnât he be happy that weâre finally free?
âT-turn ar-around.â He says with his voice still shaking. I turn my head to see what the fright is all about. At least seven police cars block our way of moving any further. All policeman and woman have their guns drawn and pointed our way.
âDrop your weapons put your hands on your head with your knees on the ground.â A policeman shouts through a megaphone. Laughter bubbles up again. I smile wider and laugh harder.
âAthena what are you doing!? Get on the freaking ground!â Jay yells. He has his hands on his head and is kneeling on the ground.
âDonât you see it Jay? Weâre finally free! Get up from that silly position and join in on the fun! This is just the beginning!â I yell in glee with my arms wide open.
âDrop your weapon!â The person on the megaphone says. I ignore the voice and flail my gun around.
âThis weapon?â I ask innocently holding the gun up to the sky with my index finger on trigger. I stop flailing it and point the gun to temple. My fingerâs positioned on the trigger.
âAthena! Put the gun down! Donât do this, please!â Jay pleads, his eyes glistening. I look into the bright and blurring headlights and sirens. The police weâre getting ready to shoot.
But Iâd rather kill than be killed.
âMaâam this is the last time we are going to tell you to drop your weapon. If you do not comply in the next ten seconds we are going to open fire without hesitation.â The megaphone guy says again. I laugh as the count down from ten.
Nine.
Eight.
Seven. âAthena just drop the weapon! Please!â Jayâs voice cracks.
Six. Silly boy, this is no time for tears. I keep laughing at the irony of all this.
Five.
Four.
Three. The policeman position their fingers on the trigger, ready to pull at any given time. I press the gun harder into my temple.
Two.
One. I pull the trigger and laugh one last time.
I hear the yell of Jayâs and the policemensâ frantic voices when I fall to the ground. They donât shoot like the promised me. Probably because they know Iâm already dead or at least getting there very quick.
The rush feels so good.
Iâve killed once more with my blood on my hands.
The world turns black for the last time.
