Chapter Eight

You know that feeling that you’re being watched? Yeah, well that’s how I feel right now. I was in my car in the school parking lot. It was like déjà vu from yesterday.

Emery was waiting at the front door again looking around the parking lot. I didn’t want to get out, I was too scared.

When I read the poem last night, I first thought of Emery. Then doubt came, I am one-hundred percent sure that it was not there when Emery left my room. It couldn’t be him. I knew it showed up between me going downstairs for dinner and me coming to my room to draw my bunny.

But I was still going to question the hell out of Emery. For all I know Emery might have come in my room when I wasn’t there and put it in there. Why would someone do something like that in the first place? What kind of sick joke was Emery trying to pull? All these questions rush in my head after my state of shock.

Sure, Emery might be really annoying, but why would he try to scare me? As much as I want to, I can’t rule Emery out.

After that poem, my body and mind kicked into full paranoia mode. Every sound I hear I had to second guess what it was. It was eating me alive, I hate it.

I really need to man up. I need to get out of this car and face my inner demons (no pun intended). So, I take a deep breath and step out of the car. I start walking step by step, taking my time. This wasn’t so bad.

I felt a hand on my shoulder. I scream and jump about five feet in the air. I whip around ready to fight. I might not be any Chuck Norris but I can bite.

“Calm down Athena, it’s just me.” Jesse says.

“Jesse, what did I tell you about sneaking up on me?” I say through clench teeth.

“I’m sorry! But you seem really tense, You okay?” Was I going to tell Jesse about the poem? Can I trust him? I told him I would give him a chance, so why not?

I sigh. “I’ll tell you in free period. I’m just really paranoid so don’t scare me.” He nods as we make are way to the front doors were Emery is.

Oh god, I was getting closer to Emery. He was grinning like an idiot, I just really want to smack that smile off his face.

“Hey Athena, last night was fun.” Emery says smiling. I think someone might need to hold me back; I was about ready to drop kick Emery. The way he says it makes it sound like…well you know…‘it’.

Jesse raises an eyebrow, Emery just stood there looking like an idiot. “Um, Emery just moved into our neighborhood and mom invited him and his parents over for dinner.” I say quickly. I didn’t want Jesse to get the wrong idea or Emery to have the satisfaction.

“So Athena are you sure that you can’t go out this weekend.” Emery asks. I roll my eyes.

“I already told you once, I am busy. Get. It. I. Am. Busy.” I say lowly.

“Okay, I understand, well I’ll see you in Religion class.” Emery says as he went into the school doors. I groan. He is so annoying.

“Are you two….together?” Jesse asks. I snort, he was funny.

“There is no way in hell I would ever go out with Emery.” I said. Jesse look relieves.

“Thank god, I don’t like him. He seems suspicious, I don’t trust him.” He says. Someone understands!

“Thank you! You don’t know how happy you just made me. You and I buddy are the only people in the school who think of Emery this way.” I said. Finally, someone gets it!

“I know! Now let’s go, class starts in a few minutes.” I take a deep breath. Another case of Déjà vu comes to me.

“Are you sure that you want to do this? People are going to talk about it; I don’t want to risk your popularity again.” He looks at me with a pained expression.

“I don’t care about my popularity, I’ve already told you. You are more important than my popularity definitely:” He opens the door and walks in. “Well come on.” I took a hesitant step forward. It was like yesterday, people were staring, glaring, whispering, and even growling. I don’t know how people growl but they were doing it.

Jesse looks calm about the whole thing. He was smiling and acting like nothing was happening. We reached my locker and people were still staring like we were the most interesting thing in the world.

“I’ve got to go to English, So I’ll see you in homeroom.” He says smiling. I wave him bye and as soon as he starts walking people started to whisper like crazy.

Did they know how loud they were, I could hear every word they were saying.

“Freak.”

“Why is he talking to her?”

“I think hell is freezing over.”

They were really annoying. I just roll my eyes and head off to Religion class. There was no teacher here today and they were currently trying to find a substitute. So now was the perfect time to interrogate Emery.

I spot Emery talking to some blondes sitting in the corner. Of course he would be there.

“Can I speak with you?” I ask Emery impatiently. Emery looks up and smiles.

“Sure, my love.” He answers. The girls just glared at me. “Now please excuse me ladies, my good friend, Athena and I would like to have a talk.” He says shooing them away. I smirk, they just got owned by the school freak.

“So did you finally come to your sense and agree on a date with me?” He asks. I just roll my eyes and snort.

“The day that I go on a date with you is the day that hell freezes over.” He frowns a little.

“Okay, so what did you come here for?”

“When you in my room last night, did you leave something?” He raises an eyebrow. “What kind of something?” I pull out the poem from my pocket and shove it at him.

“This! Did you leave this at my house?” I whisper-yell. He reads the paper and his eyes widen a bit.

“This is really creepy. Who gave you this?” He asks. Well played Emery, well played.

“Well I was thinking you. After all, you were the only one in my room last night.” He looks like he’s in shock. He was a really good actor.

“Why would I give something like this to you? Do you know how creepy this is? If I were you I would have called the police.” This guy deserves an award.

“No one else had accesses in my room last night but you. So you’re telling me that the tooth fairy came into my room and left this message on my desk?”

“I was thinking more like the Easter Bunny but the tooth fairy sounds more like a bitch.” He says back.

“This is not funny, Emery. This is serious; you know how scared I was last night to sleep?” I whisper-yell again.

“I understand but I’m not lying, I didn’t put that poem in your room. I would never do that.” By the look on his face I could tell he was telling the truth. If he was telling the truth then I was screwed. I was no step closer to finding the psycho who put this in my room.

It was lunchtime and I was sitting at my table again, alone. I haven’t seen Kyle since Monday and it was just getting me mad. Why was he avoiding me? I know that I ditched him by accident, but that didn’t mean that he could avoid me.

The worst part was that people were staring and whispering again. I hate it, I hate feeling alone and betrayed.

Then someone sat down in front of me. Of course it was Jesse. Everyone gasps like it was the most confusing thing they saw, it probably was.

“Hi.” He says.

“What are you doing here?”

“I told you yesterday if you were sitting alone then I’ll come and sit with you.” I roll my eyes, him and his promises.

“Yeah well everyone is staring at us, or more like you, like you’re crazy.”

“Yeah well I don’t care.” He says. Everyone gasps again. Sounds like they can hear us.

“They can hear us.” I say in a whisper.

“Yeah I know and I don’t care.” The he looks at me. “Where’s your lunch?” He asks worriedly. Why is he worried?

“I don’t eat lunch; I’m never hungry for it. Where’s your lunch?” I ask.

“I’ve already ate it.” I open my moth in shock. Lunch only starts like two minutes ago. He just rolls his eyes. “Athena, I’m a teenage boy. I can eat a lot of things in under a minute.” Of course he can.

“Who are you?” Someone says from above. I look up and see Kyle. Well finally he comes back.

“I’m Jesse, duh. Who are you?” Do they really not know each other? They’re both insanely popular.

“Yeah, I know. But why are you in my seat?” Kyle didn’t answer his question. What a rebel.

“I’m in this seat because no one was sitting here.” He says kind of rudely. Boys and there tittle of manliness.

“Yeah well I’m going to sit in my seat now, so move.” Jesse just rolls his and moved to the seat next to me.

“Kyle where have you been?” I ask rudely.

“I’m sorry that I missed yesterday, I couldn’t go to lunch. I had some work I had to make up.”

“Do you know how hard it was to sit here by myself? People were staring and whispering. You should have at least told me.”

“I told you I’m sorry.”

“Whatever. Just don’t do it again.” Even though I hated Kyle for leaving me, he was still my best friend and my only friend.

“Really Athena, you’re just going to forgive him. He left you to get bullied by everyone and he didn’t tell you why.”

“Jesse, really it’s okay.” I said. I can already tell that Kyle is not going to be besties with Jesse.

“Who are you to tell Athena she shouldn’t forgive me?” Kyle asks. He was pissed, I could tell.

“I’m Jesse, keep up.” I smell I fight in the near future

“You know what, I think I’m going to go to the library. ‘K bye!” I wave and left. I didn’t want to be caught up in that drama.

“Athena, wait.” Jesse says as I walk down the hallway. “I’m sorry for talking to Kyle like that. I just—it was a jerky move for him to ditch you.”

“I’m fine with it Jesse, Kyle has been my best friend since I could remember. I can’t hold a grudge on him.”

Jesse sighs. “Okay, I understand. I’m sorry.” We reached the library and it was vacant, as always.

“Okay, so are you going to tell me why you’re so uptight today?” Jesse asks. I sigh; I guess I was going to tell him. A guy that I truly known for three days was about to know my secrets. The bad thing is that I trust him.

“Yeah, I guess. Just try to keep up.” I lead him into the secluded corner of the library and sat down at one of the tables.

“Athena, before we start can I ask why there is a bruise on top of you eyebrow?” Jesse asks. I guess my eyebrow bruised when I hit my head on the steering wheel.

“I’ll get to that later. So why I am I so shaken up? Well let’s start on the events of yesterday.” I told Jesse about what happen in the car. The radio, the demon, and the radio again. I didn’t tell him about what happen when I tried to burn my picture. I was going to hold that back for some reason. I showed him the poem and he flipped out.

“That thing is so scary, Athena.” He says. He pales and his eyes look like they were about to jump out of his head. That was kind of my same reaction when I first saw it.

“I know, but I don’t know who wrote it. It was like one second it’s not there, but then another it’s like boom, a creepy poem!” I say.

“Was there anyone in your room last night?” Jesse asks. I was a little hesitant on telling Jesse that ‘Creepy Emery’ was in my room. I didn’t want him to get the wrong idea. So, I also decide to keep that to myself.

“No one but me. It’s so creepy, didn’t sleep last night because of it.” I say. Telling Jesse this was easier than I expected it to be.

“So has anything happened to you?” I ask. I sure some creepy things have been going on with him.

“The demon you saw, I think I might have met him to. Evil grin, sharp teeth, red skin, horns, and red eyes.” He explains. I gasp.

“Yup that’s him. How did you meet him?”

“Well I was taking a shower and in the middle of it and I hear a noise. Like glass cracking noise. I poke my head out of the shower and look at the mirror. In the mirror was the demon smiling at me. It scared the crap out of me. But what was written in the mirror was even creepier. It says ‘I’m watching you’. I swear Athena, I almost had I heart attack right there.

“And then there were the phone calls. The number ‘666’ would always call my cellphone. When I would answer it there were no words but just breathing on the other end of the line.”

“You know that 666 is the holy trinity. That number is pure evil.” I tell him. He nods his head.

“I have come to the conclusion that we need to figure this out and fast. So we need to plan this out. We need to cover all source; the library, internet, book stores, and physics mediums. We need all the help we can get. How about today we go to the public library?” It doesn’t sound like a bad idea. I totally agree on trying to figure this out.

I nod my head. “Okay, I have to go to football practice until four.”

“I’ll meet you at the library?” I ask.

“Um…Can you stay for practice? I want us to go together and also I want you there at practice.” Why does he want me at practice with him? This is weird, but I just nod my head.
