Chapter Nine

I hid out in the corner of the bleachers throughout the whole practice. I didn’t want anyone to see me. The cheerleaders had their practice while the football team had theirs. So I was at great risk for being seen.

Practice was dismissed and I was now waiting for Jesse to get out of the boy’s locker room.

“Hey.” I scream for the second time today. I turn around to see Jesse smiling at me. His hair was wet from the shower he just took.

“Jesse, what did I tell you about scaring me like that?” I yell at him.

“Sorry, are you ready?” He asks. I nod my head. “Are we just going to take one car?” I ask.

“Yeah sure, lets save the environment!” He says. “Can we take my car, I’m scared that when people see it, they’ll break in and take all my crap.”

He smiles. “Yeah, sure.” We walk over to my car and get in.

We arrived at the library. It was a pretty big library, five floors of books and computers. I used to come here a lot when I was a kid. After watching the movie Matilda when I was nine I wanted to be just like her. So I would come to the library every day and read a new book. It was fun getting lost in a world that was not yours. It would make me forget seeing ghost and having nightmares.

I stop coming after I had my breakdown that everyone in school witness.

“So I’ll hit the information section and you can go by the computers.” I tell Jesse. I like hitting the books more the internet. He nods and walks up to the third floor. The informational books were on the fifth floor. So I take the stairs and not the elevator. Elevators are creepy and I would rather walk up five flights of stairs then ride in a creepy elevator.

I walk up the last few steps and search the room. The only people here were the librarian behind the checkout/help counter and there were a few people reading books.

I walk to the back of the book shelves near the window and search back there. Angels. Demons. Vampires. Werewolves. Ghost. Here we go. Surprisingly there was a big section of ghost and other stuff in that nature. I look over the books that had to do with ghost. I grabbed Spiritual Beings And More, Ghost Uncovered, History of ghost, Ghost Siting in Alabama, and for the heck of it I got Exorcism: Do They Work? Satisfied with what I got I headed over to a nearby table and sat down.

I get out my notebook from my book bag and get a pencil. I open up History of Ghost to the table of contents. I scan through it until I see Why stay on earth?

In the bible of many religions, it has been said that when I person dies, only their body dies and their soul carries on to an afterlife. This is where the ‘so called myth’ is taken place. It has been said that a distressed soul stays on earth until at rest. Which is the cause of haunting and possession.

I write down this information on my notebook and get Spiritual Beings And More. I just turn to a random page Why do people see ghost? Was the first thing I saw. I would like to know too.

Ghosts have roamed around this world ever since death itself happened. Not everyone sees ghost or spiritual beings, but there are a selected few out there who have ‘The Sight’. These people are known as the ‘Chosen Ones’. They are claimed to have violet eyes and a birthmark just below their shoulder blade. This mark is called ‘The Mark Of The Angels’. These chosen ones were warriors, mentally but not physically. They have the power to but souls at rest and essentially send demons back to Hell—forever.

The sight tends to kick in around puberty. The sight is also a genetic gene, mostly common in males. If the sight has not been unleashed parse or used properly then the gift would lead to madness and insanity. This is also mostly common.

Unforchantly in the medieval times most of The Chosen Ones were killed. They were claimed to be witches and were burned to death.

Creepy. At least I know what I am now. I eagerly write this information down. I can’t wait to tell Jesse.

“Excuse me; can you help me with something?” A voice from above me asks. I look up and met eyes with an elderly lady. She smiles at me.

“Um…Sure. I don’t know if I would be much help. You could ask one of the librarians for more accurate help.” I say

“There was no one at the desk when I checked.” The elderly lady says with a trouble look on her face.

“Oh, okay. So what do you need help with?”

“I was looking for books about fish.” She tells me. Not every day an old lady wants to read a book about fish.

“Sure, I think I know where they are.” I got up from my seat and went down a few random aisles with the lady following behind me. When finally reach the fish section.

“Well here you go.” I say pointing to the fish books.

“Thank you so much dear,” She smiles sweetly at me, then turns to the books and then turns back to me. “You know it’s such a shame, you are such a pretty girl.” She says tenderly. I look at her in confusion.

“Excuse me.” I ask.

“Oh Honey, it’s only a matter of time before he takes your soul,” She reaches her hand out and touches my arm. Her hands were cold and lifeless, like the deads’. “But it’s okay though, you didn’t have a chance at fighting anyway.” I push her hand away as she continues on. “You’re just going to burn in Hell like the rest of them.” She finishes with smile on her lips.

“What?” I ask as I step back a little. Granny has got me scared.

“Your soul, its pure white and he likes that. You have the smell of virgin all over you. But it attracts too many of them, you are attracting the wrong kind of attention. He’s going to need to taint your soul in order for them to back off.” I take another step back. Her smile grows wider and she shows her crooked, jagged teeth. Her eyes turn black.

I turn around and run as I hear he laughter behind me. “This was just a warning my dear.” She says. I run to my table and grab my notebook and my book bag. I run straight down the stairs until I reach the third floor. I spot Jesse immediately and run to him.

“Jesse we need to go now.” I kind of yell. The few people nearby look at us with annoyed glances.

“What? Why?” He asks.

“I’ll tell you when we get out.” I grab his arm and pull him down the stairs. “Come on Jesse, cooperate. I can’t pull you down flights of stairs!” I tell him. I let go of his arm and run down the stairs. He follows all the way down the stairs and out of the library.

“Athena tell me what’s wrong!” He raises his voice. I get in my car frantically. He gets in the passenger side.

“Someone old lady told me that someone was going to take my soul.” I start the car and pull out of the parking lot.

“What?” He asks.

“Exactly, so shut up and I’ll explain when we get to my house.” I told him firmly. He rolls his eyes and doesn’t talk. Good.

I pull in the driveway and get out of my car.

“Come on Jesse. You’re too slow!” He slowly gets out of the car. I run over to him and grab is arm for the second time today and pull him to the front door.

“For a girl you are really strong.” He said. I punch him in the arm. “Ouch!”

“Don’t insult my sex, blondie!” I open the door and Jesse follows me in the house.

“Jesse?” Someone from behind asks. I turn to Miles looking at Jesse in confusion.

“Hi Miles!” Jesse says and smiles. What a weirdo.

“What are you doing here?”

“Athena invited me over.” Miles looks at me in confusion and disgust. “Why?” He asks and Jesse shrugs.

“Miles why aren’t you at practice and where’s mom?” I ask. I didn’t want him to over here while Jesse was.

“They canceled practice and mom went to the grocery store.” He answers rudely. Jerk.

“Okay whatever. Let’s go to my room.” I tell Jesse. I pull Jesse by the arm up the stairs. “Again Jesse, you’re going to have to help me out here. I can’t pull you up the stairs.” He rolls his eyes and climbs the stairs.

“How many floors are there in this house?” Jesse asks.

“They’re four floors and it has a basement and an attic.” I told him. The house was pretty big.

“Not too bad.” He responds back. I walk into my room and I notice that Jesse stopped before going through the door. “What?”

“Before I go through this door, will there be anything in here that will scar me for life?” He asks seriously. I roll my eyes and jump on my bed. He sits down next to me on my bed.

“There’s no dead bodies, so I guess that a good thing.” He said. I get up from my bed and hit him again.

“Ow! Can you please stop hitting me?” He says while grabbing his arm in fake pain.

“I don’t harbor dead bodies!” I yell.

“Can you now explain why you rushed me out of the library?” I sigh. I tell him about the lady looking for a fish book and how she went crazy grandma from Hell on me.

“Creepy.” Was all Jesse says. Yeah, no way.

“So what info did you get?” Jesse opens his book bag and hands me some notebook paper with writing on it.

“I highlighted everything that I thought was important.” Jesse says. He looks proud of himself.

“Why is everything highlighted?” I ask and look down at the yellow sheets of paper. He shrugs, “I thought everything was important.” I roll my eyes. He is not the smartest person I ever met.

“You write like a girl.” I told while laughing. He glares at me. “Whatever, what information did you get?” He asks rudely. I pull out my notebook and shove in his hands.

“I figured out what we are!” I say proudly. He reads over it and looks at me in shock.

“This is awesome! The information I found was better though.” He said. “Yeah sure, I would read it but it’s too bright to read. Maybe if you didn’t highlight everything I can decipher it.” I tell him. It was true, I couldn’t read a word.

He rolls his eyes. “It basically says that when a ‘Chosen Child’ is born, nine out of ten times, a demon picks that child and basically stalks them until they get what they want.” He says.

“What does the demon want?” I ask. He was right, this was good information.

“Their soul,” He says seriously. Crazy grandma told me it was only a matter of time before he had my soul. Is this what she was talking about? “Female ‘Chosen Ones’ are rare so demons pick them the most because it’s not only the soul they crave; it’s also the body they want. It has been known that demons would rape these children—boy or girl.” I shiver. That was some creepy stuff. Children being raped then killed getting their soul taken away from them.

“So that means that—“I start.

“—we have a demon stalking us.” He finishes.

“Oh god.” I say, that was so creepy. So there actually was a demon stalking us.

“The information I got says that we have the ability to send demons back to Hell.” I tell him. “But we first need to learn to ‘embrace’ are powers first because if we don’t then it could lead to insanity.” It all makes sense now.

“My dad.” I whisper. It all clicks now.

“What about your dad?” He asks.

“My dad lives in a mental institute because he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. The ‘Chosen One’ gene is genetic, so that means that the reason my dad is legally insane is because he was a ‘Chosen’, he just didn’t embrace his power.” I tell him eagerly. “Jesse, we are going to have to make a trip to see my dad.” He nods and smiles. We were finally getting closer to fighting this cruse!

“High-five!” He yells. I smack his hand. I was so happy.

“I’ll be back.” I tell him and left my room.

I went to the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water. I can’t believe that we are getting closer. I also can’t believe I’m starting to trust Jesse. I have never trusted someone fully in my life besides Kyle and my dad. I‘ve known Jesse for like three days and I almost trust him. I don’t what’s got into me.

I walk back up to my room. I open the door and see that Jesse is staring at my bulletin board. I walk up next to him; he was staring at it intently.

“What?” I ask him. I was confused why he was looking at it weirdly. He turns to face me.

“Did you draw that?” He asks. He points to something on my board. I look at my board and see a drawing.

It was the drawing of the demon I drew Monday. The big, bold, black letters that read ‘YOU CAN’T GET RID OF ME THAT EASILY’ seemed to get bigger and bolder. I look down at my desk drawer that I put the picture away in. The drawer was ripped open and the black X was torn off. There was a piece of paper at the bottom of drawer. I bend down and pick it up. I read it and my eyes widen.

“Jesse…” I whisper and show him the paper. He took it and whispered “It’s only a matter of time before I have what I want.” As it read on the paper.
