“Can you understand what the TV is saying?” I asked him.

He shook his head. “Oh.” (No)

“But you learned a new word from the TV,” I said.

“Yes.” He nodded.

It suddenly occurred to me that perhaps Dacia could be rid of me now and rely on some tools to continue learning human knowledge.

For example, television, internet, books, etc.

Ever since I started working and came home from work every night, I could see that Dacia had improved.

She was like me. We were both new to the company and were sort of partners. We were pretty close.’

“Of course not. You kept it a secret. Why haven’t I seen your boyfriend come pick you up?” Mandy asked.

“He… has a job, too,” I lied.

What else should I say?

Should I tell her that my boyfriend was a mermaid and could only hold on for forty minutes without water?

Even driving would take half an hour from my house to the office.

If he was here to pick her up from work, all I would see was a mangy fish covered in spots and dying of thirst.

“Lily, is her boyfriend really handsome?” Mandy was very gossipy.

“Your boyfriend’s a designer? A model? Or some fashion magazine editor?” Mandy guessed.

I shook my head with a wry smile. “Neither. Stop guessing.”

He was a mermaid!

“Annie, bring your boyfriend to my house for dinner next time!” Lily said enthusiastically.

Mandy asked quickly, “Can I go?”

“Of course!” Lily had no idea what she was talking about.

At that moment, Daniel’s client left.

He saw that we were chatting happily and walked over to us. “What are you guys talking about?” he asked with a smile.

“Daddy, can you invite Annie and her boyfriend to our house for dinner?” Lily asked while hugging Daniel’s arm.

“Of course we can,” Daniel agreed readily.

“When? Can we do it tonight?” Lily asked expectantly.

I was startled. Daniel wouldn’t actually say yes, would he?

Daniel obviously saw my dilemma and stroked Lily’s head. “Not for the next two days. We’ll have to wait until the weekend.”

“Okay, then Annie must come to my house for dinner this weekend!” Lily said to me.

Beside her, Mandy secretly pointed at herself. Lily immediately understood what she meant.

“Mandy is coming too!”

“Can I? Would it be too much of a bother?” Mandy tried to sound modest.

Daniel laughed heartily. “It’s all right. The more the merrier.”

I stood at the side and didn’t say anything before I was arranged to go on a weekend date. This was ridiculous!

Was my suggestion not important?

At work that afternoon, Daniel gave us a meeting.

After the meeting, I gathered up the meeting notes and sent them to his office.

His phone rang when I walked in. “Good work,” he told me. “Please wait.”

Then he picked up the phone.

“Hey, I’ve said this many times. This matter is non-negotiable and I can’t interfere. Tell Lili yourself. Don’t you understand what I’m saying? It’s none of my business!”

The more Daniel talked, the more agitated he became. He angrily hung up, making me feel awkward sitting next to him.

“Sorry to scare you.” Daniel said while feeling embarrassed.

“It’s okay,” I comforted him.

He wiped his face with his hands and adjusted his mood. “I’m ashamed to say this, but the person who called me was my ex-wife, Lily’s mother.”

I was a little surprised that Daniel was divorced.

“She got into marijuana and ran off with a drug dealer. She didn’t even care about Lily’s grandmother anymore.” Daniel looked exasperated.

“I’m sorry.” I didn’t know how to comfort him either.

“Alright, let’s not talk about this anymore. Actually, I wanted to ask you something.. Regarding the dinner at my place this weekend, do you want to reject it but feel embarrassed?”
