My phone was buzzing when we got to the hotel that night.
I checked my texts, taking a seat in the lobby. As soon as I got up to the room, who knew what Iâd be walking into. Taking a call up there sometimes was useless. Atwater ran naked through a bunch of connecting rooms one time. Other times, Wes would already be sleeping.
There were a bunch of texts from my teammates, from classmates. Miles Gaynor. Other guys. Girls, but no Mara. I knew our deal. Iâd loved our deal when she presented it at first because I didnât need a girlfriend. Hockey took too much of my time, along with my family. Girls tended to need attention and I didnât have it to give. I got the benefits of sex without the other needy shit. It was a win win, at least for me. I didnât know why Mara was how she was. Weâd been doing this thing since the end of September, but man, I kinda wished we could amend it a little so we could be friendly at times. I got her worries. Well⦠I didnât. She never explained why she didnât want to be friends, but that wasnât a stretch. Friends meant feelings could get involved and with sex already involved, I knew the dangers. Though, if anyone could pull it off, it was Mara. She had a steel wall around her heart, I swear, but the girl was cool.
Laid back. Funny at times. There was never any grief.
Fuck it. The most sheâd do is tell me not to text her.
I chuckled.
I frowned at that. That wasnât like her.
I hit send, and a couple seconds later, my phone came alive.
Whoa.
I stood, answering it, âHey.â
âWhat is this?â She sounded hella frustrated before adding, âIâm not trying to be a bitch, but I canât play games right now. Whatâs your endgame with this?â
âWith texting you?â
âYes,â she bit out. âAnd asking if Iâm okay. Like, do you actually care? For real? Or is this just some new head game because I really like what we have and if youâre starting to change the rules, justâ¦donât. Please.â
I was taken aback, and for a moment, I wasnât sure what or how to respond to that. Noticing the front desk worker watching me, I said, âHold on.â
I went outside and moved down a little from the entrance in case anyone recognized me. âOkay. For full transparency here, I just wanted to text you. I thought the worst that would happen is youâd get pissed and tell me not to do it again. As for head games, I donât do that shit. Weâve been messing around for three months and three weeks, and I donât know. I kinda feel that if any chick in a situation like ours who could handle a little texting would be you.â
âYou want to be friends?â Her voice got a little quieter. âYou want to know random things about me, that I like laundromats? Things like that?â
âMaybe texting buds? I mean, we donât want to get too carried away.â A pause. âLaundromats, huh?â
âFuck off.â
But she was laughing as she said it. That made me grin. Talking to girls was like walking a minefield. I wasnât sure where to step. One wrong direction, and kaboom.
âI know your policy on personal questions, but for realâyou okay? Something happen tonight?â
I was waiting, bracing, if I said the wrong thing.
She didnât say anything, not for a few seconds and a few more. I was sweating at this point.
Finally, in a quiet tone, âYou know Flynn Carrington?â
Gut check.
Red alarms blared, but I kept it restrained. âUh. Yeah. Why?â
âI was at Alpha Mu tonight, and he saw me. Not a big deal, but Miles warned me about him when we left. Said the look he saw from him wasâ¦â
I could guess. Miles was doing her a solid, warning her about him, but all the guys knew.
I still couldnât say the word, not for her. It was guy code, which was fucking odd in this situation.
âWhatâd he say?â
âHe said Carrington was looking at me like a predator.â
Fuck to the no, no, no.
âWhatâs your plan on handling him?â
She let out a nervous sound, like an exclamation. âHell if I know? Gavinâs already texted me, asking when Iâm going back for their next party. I was planning on avoiding the frat, you know? But Gavin can lay on the pressure.â
I wasnât liking hearing that from her, but hell if I could say anything about that.
âMillerâs going to lay it down until heâs put in his place. Heâs just built that way.â
âI know. I can handle Gavin, but Iâm a little worried about Carrington. And I feel stupid saying that because it was a that someone else saw, but I know how guys are. I know how they can be.â
âNo, man. Chicks are like deer. Some know exactly when a hunterâs got you in their scope. Trust that.â
âWhat? Youâre not going to âfixâ this situation for me? Be a typical guy?â She was teasing or I was hoping she was teasing. There was a bite to her tone, a little bit of one.
âIâm a little worried that would violate the new amendment to our emerging treaty right now so⦠no?â
She laughed, carefree and I relaxed. Slightly.
âThanks for that.â
âYeah, no problem.â
I had no clue.
âItâs kinda too bad youâre four hours away.â
âProbably for the best. After our talk, Iâd come over and have slow sex with you and we are not slow sex people.â
She laughed again.
That kept me smiling.
She said, âNo, we arenât. Hot, sensual, and hard sex. The best kind.â
âRight.â
Another laugh.
I was all the way scoring here. âI should let you go. Got a feeling if I donât head back to the room, Barclayâs going to send out my own hunting party.â
âHey.â
âYeah?â
âCan Iâbefore your games, do you like being told âgood luckâ? Whatâs the proper protocol for you?â
âItâs like you know some hockey players?â I teased. âUh, no luck, but I always like a text that says, âWin, asshole.ââ
She burst out laughing. âAre you serious?â
âYeah. Just nothing that indicates I need luck. Iâm not one of those guys.â
âOkay. So for tomorrow, win, sucker.â
âThatâs better.â
âAll right. Bye.â
âBye.â
I liked that a lot.
My phone buzzed when I was heading inside.
I read the text as I got on the elevator and started laughing.
I was still laughing when I got to the room.
