"Not only did you lie to me, you also didn't listen," a voice snapped.
I was in the girl's bathroom, washing my hands when Caitlyn's voice made me look over. She was standing in front of the doorway, alone.
"Are you talking to me?" I asked confused.
She narrowed her eyes. "No, not at all, just talking to the air," she replied sarcastically.
"What's your problem?" I asked drying off my hands.
"I told you to stay away from James!" She snapped.
Music started, filtering in from the gym through the walls. "If you didn't notice Caitlyn, he kissed me not the other way around," I replied.
"I don't care! Touch him again and I'll-" she was cut off as I stepped up.
"You'll what?" I asked placing my hands on my hips.
She didn't say anything.
"That's what I thought," I replied before pushing past her and walking out of the bathroom.
I walked to my English class and sat down, tapping my pencil on the desk. Turning my head, I saw the football boys pile out onto the tennis court.
They were obviously running the court and my eyes watched Chase run back and forth. He seemed the last to finish, running more laps than the others. "Miss Asherton? Would you like me to send you to detention?" A voice asked, bringing me out of my thoughts.
I looked back at the teacher to see her looking at me with an eyebrow raised. Some the class giggled, staring at me. "Sorry," I said, before the teacher sighed and turned back to the board.
We were supposed to be writing a short story for marks, and the teacher was teaching us deeper meanings within author's chapters but the more I dove into the chosen story, the more I wanted to sleep.
I hadn't got much sleep the past few nights. It seemed my parents fighting had got worse. If that was even possible. Finding myself staring out the window as I sat at my desk, I realised that the drive James and I had was probably the only time I wasn't thinking about my miserable home life. I wasn't thinking at all. Just enjoying the prospect of being alive.
Everything was going to change. This whole plan Chase and James had started wasn't even an ideal plan. It left many broken hearts and lost thoughts.
After barely writing anything down, I left the classroom with the other students as the bell went. The hallways crowded up as everyone shifted classes.
I was knocked into by a ton of people, rushing to get to their classes. Suddenly, a hand shot out and grabbed my wrist. Stumbling, Chase caught me. "You looked a little lost," he said, as he turned to face his locker.
I breathed out. "Thanks," I replied, relieved I wasn't in the stampede anymore.
"Hey so I know you're fake dating my brother and all that but I actually really want to start hanging out with you again, I miss our little antics," he said, reorganizing books in his locker.
I raised an eyebrow. "I thought I was too weird to hang out with you?" I asked, mostly teasing.
"Yes, you're weird but I've gotten used to it," he replied, as he closed his locker.
I shook my head and chuckled. "Besides, now that you're sorta with my brother, we'll need to act like one happy family, eventually of course cause James wants to run with this whole revenge idea," he added.
The stampede had slowed down so I fell into step with Chase as we walked.
"And your okay with the whole idea of James and I supposedly being together?" I asked, my grip on my book tightening.
"I mean sure, I already knew he had a thing for you so it makes sense," he replied.
"What? James had a thing for me?" I asked, astounded.
"You're joking right?" I added, before laughing.
It slowly died when Chase gave me a knowing look. "Wait you're serious?" I asked.
He nodded. "During that party, when he and Caitlyn were in the middle of yet another break up," he explained.
"You mean that time he said I was horrible kisser and it was no wonder I didn't have a boyfriend?" I reitered to him.
Chase chuckled as we reached class. "James has a funny way of showing his love and affection, take it from me his adopted brother," he said while still laughing.
I glanced at him. "Does it suck?" I asked, as we took our seats.
He shrugged. "Being in his shadow is worse, everyone including my own parents want me to be as confident and awesome as he is but I know my brother and he's not all he is cracked up to be," Chase replied.
The class started and we began working. His words flew around my mind. I always wondered if James just pretended to be cool and funny, or if deep down he was a shy guy who just wanted to fit in.
James was confident, there was no denying that but even the most confident guys had weaknesses. Chase was very different from his brother. They were like the ying and yang of brothers.
The day dragged on and I finished all my classes with half a mind. Today just wasn't my day to be at school. I met Chase at the front steps and waited for the sound of James's car to appear in front of us. Climbing out, the devilish boy turned around and gave us a huge grin.
"Well if it isn't my little brother and the hottest girl I know," he joked as he rounded the car.
"Can we please just leave," Chase said as opened the back door and climbed in.
"Hey," I said with a tight smile.
James ignored his brother as reached me.
"How was your day?" He asked, lifting his hand to brush some hair back behind my ear.
I shifted uncomfortably. I knew this was all for show, but he was so good at making it seem real. "It happened and I'd rather it be over," I replied.
"Doesn't sound too good, want me to make you feel better?" He asked, a smirk on his face.
His eyes swirled into mine and I felt like I was sinking into the sand. Like I would never escape.
"H-how?" I stuttered.
He swooped down quickly and kissed me, pulling me up to my tippy toes. I heard Chase sigh. James's arms went around me, pulling me flush to his body. His lips were soft against mine, coaxing me into his touch.
Quickly, he pulled away. "I'll drive you home," he whispered before clearing his throat.
He looked away and pulled away quickly, moving back to the driver's side. With a hard swallow, I stepped down off the steps and opened the passenger door, climbing into the car.
My mind was in another world and music started blasting as soon as the car was brought to life. Glancing over at James, I noticed his hands were white knuckled on the steering wheel and his jaw was clenched.
Had I done something wrong?

What do you guys think?
I wonder why James would kiss her and then suddenly be angry.
Maybe he's angry at himself... but what for?
And what about the small tidbit about him liking her during the party?
