Phillip is lying across the couch, watching a college basketball game.
I stand directly in front of the TV, arms crossed and foot tapping in irritation.
âWhat?â he asks, trying to look around me.
âDonât me,â I say. âItâs not funny.â
âWhatâs not funny?â
Phillip looks confused. I really thought heâd smile.
âYou moved the gnome to freak me out.â
âThe gnome? No, I didnât.â
âPhillip, do you promiseâswearâyou didnât move it?â
âI swear. What is your obsession with this gnome?â
âHeâs moving of his own accord, Phillip. Youâre the man of this house. Doesnât that concern you?â
âCan you move over just a little?â Phillip asks, still trying to see the game.
I grab the remote and threaten to turn it off.
Phillip leaps off the couch and then pins me to the chaise. âYouâre being a bad girl.â
âPhillip! Stop thinking about sex. I mean, donât stop thinking about sex, just donât think about it right this second. I need you to come upstairs and deal with this.â
He laughs. âDeal with the gnome? What do you want me to do with it? Shall I bring in a gnome from a rival school? Take out a hit on it?â
âYouâre not taking this seriously.â I pout.
He gets off me and pulls me up. âFine. Show me the gnome.â
I tiptoe upstairs and point toward the living room where the gnome has now taken up residence on the back of the sofa table.
âHow did he get there?â
âI have no idea.â
âThis is silly.â
âI know!â
âLetâs wrap him up tight and put him back in the hutch,â Phillip says, going out to the garage. He gets a ball of twine and wraps the gnomeâs legs with it. âThere, he wonât be able to walk now.â
âYou think heâs walking?â
He rolls his eyes at me. â
think heâs walking; thatâs all that matters.â
âBut he has a mono leg. I think he hops, so I donât think the string will stop him, Phillip.â
âFine,â he says, anxious to get back to the game. âIâll tie him into the hutch.â
He opens the top drawer and ties string around my heavy cutlery tray. Then, he lays the gnome down faceup and ties those strings around his legs.
âHeâs not going anywhere now,â Phillip says, shutting the drawer and heading back downstairs.
