I glance at my phone, knowing Iâve missed most of my meetings today because of a problem here at the job site. When the contractor and I met with the inspector, he decided one of the beams in the two-story entrance wasnât hefty enough and wanted us to replace it due to the length of the span. I called my old boss, the engineer whoâd approved my structural design so that this wouldnât happen. He said the inspector was going for overkill but suggested we do what heâd asked. Told me it was better to be on their good side than risk more arguments. So, I listened even though itâs going to put us behind at least two weeks while we wait for the new steel beam to be constructed and delivered.
When I get to the office, Phillipâs assistant, who has been handling all my appointments, asks me if everything is okay. While we were meeting with the inspector, I couldnât very well call and chat.
âYeah, itâs fine. We had an issue with a beam. Can you call Brenda at the office furniture company and ask if she can reschedule for tomorrow?â
âSure thing,â she says. âThere are some notes on your desk, and Phillip wants to see you as soon as you get in.â
âTell him to come to my office when heâs free. Iâve got to rework these timelines.â
âCute boots,â she says.
âThank you!â
I quickly make my way to my office, knowing that she could chat with me all day and somehow still manage to keep the office running.
When I get the timeline reworked, I see that the building is scheduled to be finished just five weeks before my due date. Add another week to move in all the furniture, and Iâm down to a month.
I pray there are no more setbacks.
âDanny Diamond on line four,â Peggy says over my speakerphone.
âHey, Danny,â I say.
âSo, how were the cupcakes?â he asks, his deep voice barely above a whisper.
I whisper back, âThe cupcakes were fun.â
âPhillip monopolized all your time yesterday. I need to give you my present.â
âWhy are you whispering?â I ask him.
âSo, my wife doesnât hear me.â
âWhy donât you want Lori to hear you?â
âBecause Iâm supposed to be putting the crib together.â
âWho are you talking to?â I hear Lori say from somewhere in the background.
âNo one, honey. Just singing,â he lies.
âAre you not allowed to be on the phone?â
âI just donât want to upset her.â
âHave you thought of hiring someone to do it?â
âOh, Iâve thought of it, but Lori seems to think itâs something I should do. Like a rite of passage.â
âCan I ask you something?â
âSure.â
âIs Lori mad at me?â
âI donât think so. Why?â
âYesterday was my birthday.â
âI know. I sent a bunch of doughnuts to your office.â
âDid Lori help you with that?â
âNo. Why?â
âShe didnât say anything. Didnât text me. Itâs just unusual.â
âSheâs scatterbrained right now. They say it happens in the last trimester. Who knows? Shit, sheâs coming. Iâve gotta go.â
When Lori and Danny come over for dinner, she still doesnât say anything. Phillip grabs Danny and himself a couple of beers, and I get Lori a bottle of water.
âYouâre not having one?â she asks me.
âNo,â I say as I grab a Diet Coke out of the fridge, pour it over ice, and take a big gulp.
âYouâre drinking that?â she asks with horror, like I just poured poison down my throat.
âYeah. My doctorâwho is also your doctorâtold me, everything in moderation. He said I could have a pop occasionally. This is the first one Iâve had since I found out I was pregnant.â
âHowâs it taste?â Phillip asks, setting plates and silverware on the table next to the bags of takeout.
âFreaking amazing. And I love Diet Coke with Chinese food. It smells incredible, doesnât it?â
âYou seem like youâre feeling awfully chipper,â Lori states flatly.
âI am. No more morning sickness.â
âI wouldnât call what you had morning sickness,â she counters. âYou gagged a few times.â
âI was nauseous and didnât feel good. The doctor called it morning sickness, so Iâm assuming thatâs what it was.â
âOf course she had morning sickness,â Danny says, shaking his head at her. âEnough of the pregnancy talk. I have something more exciting.â
âWhatâs that?â Phillip asks, digging into the fried rice and dishing it onto our plates.
I canât wait to dig in.
Danny pulls an envelope out of his back pocket and hands it to me.
I open what I assume will be a birthday card. One that probably has some hilarious and inappropriate joke that will make Phillip and me laugh.
But, as I open it, I see a university seal instead. Inside the card are photos of what appears to be a skybox.
âWhatâs this?â I ask.
âI got you a skybox. Well, I got a skybox.â
My eyes widen in shock. I glance at Phillip; he looks the same way.
âAre you serious? You got a skybox for the Nebraska games? Ohmigawd! Thatâs amazing, Danny! Thank you! What an incredible gift!â
âWhen did you do that?â Lori asks.
âItâs something Iâve been working on.â
I jump up from the table and throw my arms around him in a big hug. âI love you,â I tell him.
âI love you, too,â he says. âHappy birthday!â
âIâm pretty sure Iâm in love with you as well,â Phillip jokes.
âWell, technically, itâs mine. But you will have seats for any game you want. And, with my schedule, youâll probably use it more than I will.â
âWeâre gonna have fun,â Phillip says.
He and Danny fist-bump across the table as I sit back down.
âI canât believe you bought that and didnât tell me!â Lori yells at Danny.
âWe talked about it before. I just didnât want to tell everyone until it was a done deal.â
âItâs a lot of money,â she states.
âAnd I can afford it.â
â
can afford it, you mean,â she says in a really bitchy tone.
âNo,â Danny says back. âI meant what I said.
can afford it since earned the sign-on bonus that paid for it. It also bought our house and is paying for the remodel. I donât have to ask your permission to spend money I earned before we got married.â
âIâve decided Iâm not hungry anymore,â she says, slamming her chopsticks on the table, getting up, and walking out the door.
âYou should probablyââ I start to say.
Danny holds his hand up. âDonât say it. Iâm not chasing after her. Sheâs being a ridiculous bitch, and Iâm sick of her blaming it on the pregnancy. Youâre pregnant, and you arenât behaving like that. Besides, months ago, I told her it was something I wanted to do, and she was all for it. She knows itâs been my dream since I was a kid. My parents are thrilled, and I knew you guys would love it. Iâm not going to let her ruin our excitement.â
âAnd you shouldnât,â Phillip says, âbecause a skybox is pretty exciting.â
