âI have an entire evening planned,â I blurt as we walk out of the office, my hand holding Tally firm. I feel like Iâm hopped up on speed after seeing my baby for the first time, and Iâm beyond desperate to get the woman I love home to prove how much I miss her.
âDo you?â Tally offers me a smile, but itâs forced, like most of her smiles lately. In fact, the first real one Iâve seen since the whole Charlotte debacle was when she gazed at the monitor and saw our baby.
Our baby.
Itâs crazy, but itâs so right. I always knew I wanted kids; I just didnât want them with Charlotte. But with Tally, thereâs no hesitancy. Only joy.
Along with the sneaking suspicion that my gorgeous girl is going to make me jump through an array of hoops to earn back a place in her heart.
âI called in a takeout order from the best Italian restaurant in town, and Iâll have a bubble bath ready for you the moment you arrive. Or just leave your car here. Let me drive you.â I donât know if Iâm speaking at the speed of light because of excitement or fear that sheâs going to say no to date night.
Her face scrunches in confusion. âHold up a minute. Who are these plans with?â
âYou, Darlin. Iâm getting us back on track.â
Tally laughs, but itâs not her husky chuckle of excitement. No, itâs as stilted as the rest of her responses today. âThanks for the offer, but I canât tonight.â
âWhy not?â
Her eyes widen at my pointed question. Good, at least itâs a genuine response. âExcuse me?â
âI asked why not?â I repeat, crossing my arms over my chest. âThis is a big night, Tally. We just saw our baby. Donât you want to celebrate with me?â
She falters, but itâs only for an instant before the mask slides back into place. âI have a prior engagement, Owen.â She lifts onto tiptoe, offering me a bland kiss on the cheek. âEnjoy your dinner. Iâm sure you can find company, should you require it.â
âWho are your plans with? Let me guessâDan?â
She rolls her dark eyes at me, her full lips pursed in annoyance. âIâm going to pretend you didnât ask me that question.â
âIs there something going on? Heâs been very devoted.â My questions are clipped and harsh, but Iâm finding it hard to contain my rage.
âScrew you, Owen.â Tally turns on her heel, yanking open the car door.
I have a ton of things I want to say in response to her blow off. Scream in response, at this point. But all I can manage is clenching and unclenching my fists as she drives off, with nary a backward glance.
Iâm so screwed.
Iâm halfway to my car, stomping like a furious toddler, when I catch sight of Stefani walking off the elevator banks across the garage. âStefani!â I bellow, waving my hand as I jog over. If anyone knows whatâs going on in Tallyâs head, itâs her best friend.
âHi, Owen. What can I do for you?â Her brows raise. âDonât tell me you missed the sonogram appointment.â
Jesus, what these women think of me. The worst part is knowing that Iâve earned their skepticism. âI didnât miss the appointment.â
âIs everything okay with the baby?â
I smile, despite my frustration, as I lean against her car. âThe baby is perfect. It was such a trip, seeing him on the screen.â
âHim?â
I shrug, offering a dry laugh. âToo early to tell definitively, but Tally and I both think itâs a boy.â
Stefani leans next to me, giving me a nudge with her elbow. âThat a trip. But itâs not why you ran across the parking garage, either.â
I know that I should make small talk, but I donât have that kind of time.
I need answers.
Now.
âIs there something going on between Tally and Dan?â
Stefani wrinkles her nose at my direct question. Thatâs not a good start. âWhere in the world did that idea come from?â
âThings have been shit between me and Tallyââ
âAnd youâre blaming Dan?â
This is definitely going as smoothly as I hoped. âNot exactly. I know that theyâre friends, but I wondered if heâd made a move on Tally.â
Stefani stretches to her full height, only a few inches shorter than me. âFirst, Dan and Lu are just friends. Period. Theyâve been friends for years. Second, Dan has been keeping Lu company because her life has been crap the last few weeks. Third, and most important, Lu is pregnantââshe pokes me in the chest with her fingerââwith baby. So perhaps the strain in your relationship is less about Dan and more about how busy youâve been entertaining your .â
I do appreciate her candor. Now at least I know that Dan isnât a threat, and my girl hasnât moved on.
Yet.
I run a hand over my scalp, shooting Stefani a rueful glance. âYouâre right. This training center and business with Charlotte has hijacked all my free time. But I allowed it. I was the asshole who let her get away with it, while Tally paid the price.â
Stefani fiddles with her keys, and Iâm uncertain I want to hear what more she has to say. âOwen, is this some battle of wills? Lu is my best friend, and she deserves to be treated with care and courtesy.â
âI agreeââ
âThatâs the trouble,â Stefani cuts me off, raising her hand when I open my mouth to retort. âYou say that, but look at the situation. How would you feel if the roles were reversed, and Lu was hanging out with an old flame several nights per week? An old flame that wanted her back?â
I have to hand it to Stefani; she has a way of cutting to the quick. âI would have mopped the floor with his ass by now, set him straight.â
âExactly. I know this situation is different, with the success of the training center contingent on your participation, but that doesnât diminish the fact that Luâs heart is hurting. And you did it.â Finally, she raises her gaze to meet mine. âI really hoped you would be different. You seemed different.â
âI different. I have a ring for Tally, remember?â
She taps my chest with her key, narrowing her gaze. âThen might I suggest you treat her like the woman you love, and less like the woman who you think will be waiting when your business with Charlotte is finished? I have to go.
and I have a date.â Another pointed glance.
Message received. Iâm way the hell off.
I open Stefaniâs door, forcing a smile. âHave a good time. You two make a good couple.â
âOwen, you and Lu were relationship goals. Seriously. Iâve never seen two people so intoxicated with one another. But she will not be sloppy seconds, even for a man like you.â She slides the car into reverse, pausing with her hand on the shifter. âTo be fair, she really is busy. Packing up her apartment and discovering sheâs pregnant has usurped most of the real estate in her brain these last few weeks.â
âMoving?â As I eke out the syllables, my heart sinks. Is Tally making good on her threat to relocate?
âShe lost the lease on her apartment. The landlord needs the space for her grandson, so Lu is packing and trying to be out by this weekend. Iâm going to help her tomorrow.â
âNo need. Iâll hire movers.â I offer a wave goodbye before making a beeline for my car.
My destination?
Tallyâs soon to be former apartment, and if my girl is lifting heavy boxes, Iâm spanking every inch of her sweet ass.
I push open the door, my ire growing as I watch Tally fumble to hoist a box above her head.
âIf you donât put that box downââ I order, marching across the room and grabbing it from her hands.
âOwen, what are you doing here?â
âThese are your plans? Packing? Why didnât you ask me for help?â
Tally lifts herself to her full height, more than a foot below me, and I canât help but smile at the size difference between her and Stefani. âMaybe I donât need your help.â
âMaybe itâs not up for debate.â
She throws up her hands, flopping onto the couch with a pout that Iâm tempted to suck off her lips. âYou canât just walk in here and order me around.â
I bite back a grin. Tally may be ready for battle, but this time, Iâve got my armor on, too. Sheâs not winning this fight. âYes, I can.â I punch in a number on my phone, my gaze resting on her perturbed expression.
The woman is too damn delectable when sheâs mad.
Within five minutes, Iâve hired a moving company. Theyâre even handling the rest of the packing. Tally has enough stress. She doesnât need to spend her downtime wrapping plates. âAll done. Theyâll be here on Saturday.â
âGreat, that solves part of my problem,â Tally states, chewing her lower lip.
I sink next to her on the couch, close enough to feel the energy sparking between us. âWhatâs the other part of your problem?â
âI havenât found a place to live yet.â
Leaning back, I shoot her a smirk. âWhy not, Tally? That seems so irresponsible of you.â Yes, Iâm screwing with her, but I need to stoke the emotion that sheâs holding at bay.
True to form, my girlâs temper flares as she adjusts her glasses. âI want to hit you. Preferably with something heavy.â
âGo ahead. Still doesnât answer my question.â
âWhat can I say? I enjoy living on the edge.â
With lightning reflexes, I pull Tally onto my lap, feeling her tense in my arms. âYou have a place to live. You, Nugget and Hecate are moving into the condo. I bought it for us, and itâs about damn time you started living there. See? Two problems solved in less than ten minutes. This is why you need me.â My lips caress her neck as I bask in the scent that is intrinsically Tally.
Christ, this woman smells like heaven, even covered in a thin sheen of sweat. Especially covered in a thin sheen of sweat.
âHow does that solve anything?â Tally counters, her slight hands trying to put space between us.
Not happening.
âIâm going to pretend I didnât hear that.â I murmur my words against her neck, as I trace a path along her skin with my tongue. My hands circle her hips, pushing her down against my erection. I swear to God, if I donât get inside Tally soon, my dick is going to explode.
âI can say it louder.â Despite my sexual ministrations, Tally isnât willing to cave that easily. Sheâs going to make me work for every inch of her delicious body.
Mission accepted.
âAs I see it, we have three options. I can kiss every inch of your body, right here, right now.â
âWhat are the other options?â Tally may act tough, but I feel her pulse quicken as I tongue the hollow of her neck.
âWe can continue arguing, because thatâs so much more productive. Or, we pick up our dinner, which is waiting for us, and then for dessert, I feast on you.â I stand up, taking my tiny vixen with me, only setting her back down when she squirms in my arms. âYou have ten minutes to pack some clothes while I coax Hecate into the carrier.â
Tally stands her ground, her hands locked on her hips and jaw set, but she looks more like a Care Bear than a fierce warrior.
Better not mention that fact.
With a chuckle, I drop a kiss on the top of her head. âCome on blood goat queen, times a wasting.â
That did it. The grimace fades, and Tally grins, shrugging in resignation. âFine. But itâs only temporary until I find a place.â
âWeâll see about that. The final decision lies with Hecate.â
âSheâs my cat. Sheâs going to side with me.â
I offer Tally a wink as I stroke Hecateâs fur, her back arching into my hand. âYou sure about that? She seems really fond of me.â
âNo accounting for taste.â
âYou know I taste good,â I volley back, watching my girl flush. âNot as good as you, butââ
âGo collect the cat,â she mutters, ushering me out of the room as she opens a suitcase on her bed. âIâll be done in a minute.â
As I coaxâokay, shoveâHecate into the carrier and cart her to the car, I canât keep the smile from my face.
Finally, my girl is coming home.
