Knoxville
Iâm packing up my camera gear when my phone rings from the kitchen. A cozy feeling floods me as I look at the caller ID.
Itâs Duke.
I canât help but smile as I pick up.
âHey, Duke,â I say.
His voice comes through, setting off a burst of excitement inside me. âHowâs everything going?â
âJust finished up. Got all my shots done andâ¦â I stop mid-sentence, the dayâs work replaying in my mind.
Heâs curious now. âHowâd it go?â
I laugh a little, thinking about the process. âItâs not so bad, really. These shots, theyâre easier than I thought.â
âThatâs a new one for me,â he sounds surprised.
I lean against the counter, the phone cradled between my ear and shoulder. âHonestly, Duke, itâs quick. Just a few seconds of discomfort.â
âGood to know,â he says, and I can almost hear his smile.
But then, the reality sinks back in. âThe tough part is yet to come. The egg retrieval. They say thatâs the real deal.â
âYeah, that partâs tough,â he agrees, and I appreciate his honesty.
I canât help but probe a little. âYouâve been through this a few times, havenât you?â
He hesitates, âUmmm, yeah.â
I try to sound encouraging. âWell, hopefully, this is the last time for you.â
Thereâs a pause before he speaks again.
âWell..â
I laugh, trying to lighten the mood. âNever mind me. Howâs Aisling doing?â
âSheâs good,â he replies, and I sense a change in his tone.
âIs she back yet?â
âNo, not until Thursday.â I frown slightly, knowing the distance must be hard on him. But he has me to talk to.
He cuts me off before I can say more. âJust wanted to check on youâ¦â
âI appreciate it,â I say, but then remember something important. âI heard you want me to quit my job, to leave here?â
His response is quick. âThat wasnât from me.â
Iâm confused now. âIt wasnât you?â
âNo.â
I frown deeper, my mind spinning. âI thought thatâs what you wanted.â
My grandaunt thinks itâs better to move me into a house, especially if the test is positive next week.â
âTheyâre talking about me quitting my job too,â I add, the idea unsettling me.
Duke seems surprised. âThey didnât mention that to me.â
I frown. âReally? I wonder why.â
Heâs just as puzzled. âI have no idea.â
A sense of isolation creeps in. âMaybe they donât want me around,â I say, more to myself, feeling a twinge in my heart.
Dukeâs voice turns gentle. âDo you want to quit your job?â
Iâm torn. âIâm not sure, Duke. I donât want to just stay home after having the baby. Iâd go stir-crazy. I love my job. And itâs not like I canât transfer. Iâm with the IRS, theyâre everywhere.â
His reply is reassuring, a lifeline in my confusion. âDo whatâs right for you, Simone. Donât be pressured into anything.â
His words warm me, easing some of the worry. âThanks, Duke. I needed to hear that.â
âJust be yourself,â he encourages.
I smile. âI will. Iâm definitely doing me.â
âGood.â
I take a moment, gratitude swelling in me. âAnd Duke, thank you for the house. Thatâs incredibly generous.â
Heâs modest, as always. âMy pleasure, Simone.â
Just after hanging up with Duke, I dial Mariahâs number, craving the sound of her upbeat voice. She doesnât disappoint.
âHey, Simone! Whatâs happening?â
I try to sound lighthearted. âWerenât you supposed to come over tonight?â
She sounds frazzled. âOh, Iâm swamped at work. Weâre drowning in paperwork. Canât make it, sorry.â
âSo, I guess youâre not coming?â
Sheâs quick to apologize. âI really wish I could, Simone. Iâm sorry.â
âOkay.â
Her tone shifts, concerned. âHow are you holding up?â
I muster a small smile. âIâm managing.â
âThatâs great to hear,â she says. âLetâs catch up later. I could use your advice on something.â
Intrigued, I ask, âAbout what?â
I pause, the gravity of the situation settling in. âAbout where I might be living soon.â
Her reaction is immediate and full of disbelief. âHeâs getting you a house?â
I nod, âYeah.â
Her voice rises in shock. âSeriously?â
âCompletely.â
Sheâs curious now. âWhere at?â
I chuckle, the absurdity of it all hitting me. âThatâs the thing. I have no idea. Need your help deciding.â
âIâll call you tonight. And you better stay awake!â
I laugh, her excitement infectious. âI wonât sleep, promise.â
Sheâs still in awe as we end the call. âA house, Simoneâ¦â
I agree, feeling a mix of wonder and disbelief. âItâs unbelievable.â
âDidnât see that coming,â she adds.
âMe neither,â I reply, half-amused, half-overwhelmed.
âWeâll talk later, okay?â
âCanât wait,â I say, hanging up with a heart full of anticipation and a mind swirling with possibilities.
