Spring City
I sink into the couch in the living room, flanked by Kari and Geneva. Yes, Kari is here as we requested to do so. The coffee table is littered with papers and a laptop.
Geneva clears her throat, her voice heavy with the news sheâs holding. âKari, we brought you here tonight because thereâs something you need to know.â
Kariâs eyes flick between Geneva and me, confusion written all over her face. âIs everything okay?â she asks, with a hint of worry in her voice.
âNo,â Genevaâs reply is blunt, and I feel a chill run down my spine.
Kariâs expression crumbles with concern. âDid I do something wrong?â
I quickly jump in, âNo, Kari, itâs not about you.â
She relaxes, just a fraction, but her eyes are still filled with unease. âOkay, whatâs going on then?â
Geneva takes a deep breath. âAisling is coming to Wesbury soon.â
Kari nods, waiting for more, but Genevaâs next words visibly shake her. âWe have some really bad news for her.â
Kariâs voice shakes, âSomething terrible happened?â
Geneva nods solemnly. âYes, and itâs serious.â
I brace myself, feeling the weight of the truth Iâm about to reveal. âKari, Duke is having a baby with another woman named Simone.â
The shock on Kariâs face is clear. âDuke? A baby?â
âYes,â I confirm, and Geneva picks up, âTheyâre doing IVF. Weâve gathered some information on Simone.â
Kari seems to reel from the impact of the news. âWas that what the call was about earlier?â
Geneva nods, her expression grave. âShe was vague about herself, but she mentioned working at the clinic where the IVF is happening.â
âDuke Presley?â Kari can barely believe it.
Geneva hands her some printed photos of Simone from Instagram. Kariâs eyes grow wide as she looks at them.
âShe looks so much like Aisling. Can you see it?â
