Spring City
Iâm jolted awake by the sound of my phone ringing, the morning sun already spilling through the bedroom window. Groggy and disoriented, I fumble for it on the nightstand. Genevaâs name flashes on the screen, and I immediately feel a sense of foreboding.
âGeneva?â I answer, still half asleep.
âElena, are you still in bed?â she asks sharply.
âWhatâs going on?â I mumble, trying to wake up fully.
âListen, Iâve got news,â Geneva says urgently.
âWhat is it?â I ask, now sitting up straight.
âI just got off the phone with that anonymous woman,â she tells me.
My heart skips a beat. âShe called again?â
âYes, Elena, thatâs what I just said,â Geneva sounds impatient. âDuke backed out. Heâs not going through with it.â
âHeâs not?â I canât hide my shock.
âThatâs right. He called the whole thing off. Heâs out,â she says, almost sounding pleased.
âWhat happened?â I ask, curious now.
She speculates, âHe mustâve gotten suspicious. I think Aislingâs giving him a hard time at home.â
I nod. âAislingâs been acting strange, keeping things from us. Itâs been worrying me.â
âDid she confront him or something?â I ask.
But what could she have possibly said or done to influence this decision?
Geneva sighs. âShe hasnât said anything. But he mustâve sensed something to suddenly cancel.â
âYouâre right. Something must have happened,â I agree, trying to piece it all together.
âThis might be good news, Elena,â Geneva adds.
âBut Iâm not so sure,â she hesitates. âItâs not over yet. Heâs still involved with that girl.â
My heart sinks. âYeah, I guess youâre right.â
âSheâs his mistress. Until he ends things with her, itâs not really over,â she says gravely.
âAnd theyâve been together for a while,â I add, remembering Aislingâs revelations from the night before.
âDid you find out anything new?â she asks.
I take a deep breath. âI talked to Aisling last night. She said Dukeâs been involved with this girl for quite a while.â
âAisling told you that?â Geneva sounds surprised.
âYes,â I confirm.
âBut how did she find out?â
âShe met with Heather yesterday,â I explain, recalling the details Aisling shared.
Geneva processes this. âI remember calling her, and she was at Heatherâs.â
âSo Heather told her everything,â I say, feeling a sense of relief that weâre finally getting somewhere.
âReally?â.
âYes, Geneva, a lot,â I confirm.
âHow did Heather get involved?â she asks.
âHeatherâs friend works with Simoneâs cousin in Knoxville. Sheâs been secretly passing information. Simoneâs cousin has no idea,â I explain.
Genevaâs awe is evident in her voice. âIsnât it amazing how things work out? The right people show up just when you need them.â
I nod. âIt always amazes me.â
âWhy didnât Heather speak up earlier?â Geneva wonders.
âFear, mostly,â I say, understanding her reluctance. âShe was wary, given her position. But she did give us some clues, even if Aisling didnât realize their significance.â
âIs Aisling at the cafe today?â she shifts the topic.
âNo, sheâs staying home. She said she wonât be going to the cafe this week.â
âThatâs unusual,â she notes.
âYeah, she even sent her housekeeper and assistant on a break,â I say. âSomethingâs definitely going on.â
âWhy would she send them away?â
âI think sheâs trying to keep them out of whateverâs going on. The tension at their house must be worse than we thought,â I say.
Geneva agrees. âIt must be. Duke calling off the procedure has to be connected to whatever Aislingâs caught up in.â
But my fears run deeper. âIâm scared, Geneva.â
âScared of what?â
âIâm afraid Aisling might do something drastic to Duke. Sheâs hurt, sheâs angry, and people can do terrible things when theyâre in pain,â I admit, the fear evident. âI donât want her to end up in jail.â
Geneva is skeptical. âI canât imagine her going that far.â
âBut sheâs acting so differently,â I argue. âUsually, sheâd come stay with us, avoid him for days. Sheâd confront him.â
Geneva acknowledges this. âThatâs true.â
âAnd she wouldnât cook for him,â I add.
âBut she shared a bed with him?â Genevaâs question catches me off guard.
âWhat?!â I exclaim, my heart skipping a beat.
âDidnât she tell you? They slept together the night she came back from our place,â Geneva reveals, her voice filled with disbelief.
Iâm shocked. âThatâs not like her at all. Itâs alarming.â
âI was surprised when she told me too,â Geneva says.
âIâm worried her anger could lead her to harm him,â I express my deepest fear.
Geneva tries to reassure me. âI donât think Aisling would go that far.â
But Iâm not convinced. âGenevaâ¦â
She interrupts me. âElena, people grow through challenges. Aislingâs becoming stronger, more resilient. Thatâs what I see happening.â Her voice is firm, trying to infuse some confidence into our conversation.
