Presley Estate, Wesbury
I pull the car to a gentle stop, just a few yards from the breathtaking Chateau. It stands tall and regal, its beauty drawing a breath from my lips. Beside me, Daphneâs eyes shine with the same admiration, her excitement palpable.
âSo this is it,â I say to Daphne, my voice filled with a mix of awe and familiarity as I gaze at the grand building. âThe home of Duke and Aisling.â
Daphneâs eyes light up with admiration. âThis place is super gorgeous,â she gushes.
I nod, unable to disagree. âIt is.â
Her excitement is infectious. âLetâs go inside. Iâm dying to see the whole place. Maybe we can take a tour?â
I pause, hesitating. The idea feels invasive, like peering through someoneâs diary. âI donât think itâs right, Daph. Duke and Aisling arenât here.â
Daphne scoffs, waving her hand dismissively.
âWhy not?â
âWe just canât,â
âWhy canât we?â She presses, not understanding the boundary Iâm trying to uphold.
âTheyâre not here,â I admit, the disappointment clear in my voice.
Daphneâs not one to give up. âWe could ask the housekeeper to show us around. Itâs only a tour. Iâm sure Aisling wouldnât mind, especially since youâre here.â
I picture how Iâd feel if someone wandered through my home in my absence. âTheyâre people, Daph. With lives and privacy.â The house, grand as it is, represents more than just bricks and art. Itâs their sanctuary. I wouldnât want strangers poking around my space, even if it wasnât half as majestic.
She looks at me, a hint of mischief in her eyes. âJust a peek? I just really wanted to peek inside the Chateau.â
âWeâll do it another time,â I suggest gently, hoping to visit when Aisling is around. âHow about we come back another time? Maybe when theyâre here?â
âDo you know when Aisling will be back?â Daphne asks, her voice tinged with genuine concern.
I sigh, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. âI wish I did.â
âAnd Duke?â she inquires.
âHeâs in Rich Oaks,â I inform her.
Daphne lets out a heartfelt sigh. âI really hope they get their baby.â Her words echo my own silent prayers for Duke and Aisling.
âMe too,â I admit, my brow furrowing with concern. âI canât shake off this feeling that heâs with that girl just to have a baby.â
âYou think so too?â Daphne asks, her voice tinged with surprise.
âYeah. It feels like heâs trying to have a baby with her,â I confess, the unease growing inside me.
âIâve had the same hunch,â she says, mirroring my worries.
I canât hold back my thoughts any longer. âAnd his momâs in on it. I wouldnât be surprised if they set him up with her for that very reason.â
âYou mentioned that before,â Daphne recalls.
âItâs true. We canât let this go any further. They shouldnât even get to that point,â I say, with a sense of urgency in my voice.
âBut Aisling knows about her now,â Daphne points out.
âHow sure are we that heâs not still seeing her?â I ponder aloud, the suspicion gnawing at me.
âI need to dig deeper,â I say, determination setting in.
In a hushed tone, I share my fears. âHeâs planning to move her out of Knoxville, maybe even buy her a house in another town. Itâs like heâs trying to hide her from everyone.â
âThat makes sense, especially now that Aisling knows about her,â Daphne nods.
âWe need to stay on top of this, and find out whatâs really going on,â I insist.
Daphneâs eyes widen, struck by a sudden thought. âWhat if heâs moving her because sheâs pregnant with his child and he doesnât want anyone finding out?â
My heart sinks at the possibility. âOh, my God. There could be so many reasons.â
âWhat should we do?â Daphne asks, her voice laced with worry.
âWe need to get closer to Simone too. We have to find a way to befriend her,â I suggest, already plotting our next move in this tangled web. The thought of Duke possibly fathering a child with another woman and the secrets that might be lurking in the shadows sends a chill down my spine. We have to uncover the truth, and stop them, for Aislingâs sake.
