Sitting in my bedroom, tears are streaming down my face, the sense of betrayal weighing heavily on my chest. My mom, Elena, sits next to me, her presence a small comfort in the whirlwind of emotions Iâm feeling.
âIs it true, Mom?â I ask, desperate for some kind of confirmation.
âThereâs no curse, Aisling,â she says
I wipe my eyes, searching for clarity. âAre you sure?â
âCompletely sure. Iâve never heard such nonsense about our family before.â
âReally?â My voice shakes as I ask.
âAbsolutely true.â
I sigh deeply, my heart hurting. âBut Duke believes it, Mom. Heâs not the type to believe in these things. And yet he tried to have a baby with someone else. It feels so real.â
âDid you talk to him today?â she asks softly.
âNo. I donât think heâll call me.â
âAislingâ¦â
âI told him not to call me. Iâm done with him, Mom. I just want out of that family.â
She pauses before speaking, âHe actually called me.â
I look at her, confused. âHe did? What for?â
âI was the one who called him last night, but he was on his way back to Wesbury. He returned my call when he landed.â
âWhat did you want to ask him?â
âI needed to know everything.â
âIt doesnât matter. Iâve already told you everything. You didnât need him to repeat it.â
âI wanted to hear more from him, and he told me everything.â
âOkay,â I say, feeling a sense of resignation.
âIâve forgiven him, Aisling.â
âMomâ¦â I turn to her, my eyes full of disapproval. âMom!â
âAisling, heâs been honest about everything now.â
âBut he was caught, Mom. He didnât come forward willingly.â
âI understand. His mother and aunt orchestrated this whole thing, pushing him to be with another woman.â
âAnd he mentioned seeing a psychic,â I add, skeptically.
âThat psychic was likely paid off. Itâs a common trick.â
âIâm going to uncover the truth myself. I need to know if she was paid.â
âYou should,â she agrees, not trying to dissuade me.
âJust donât defend him, please.â
Her concern shifts. âAre you still considering the IVF?â
I shake my head firmly. âNo, Iâm not.â
âAisling, think about it.â
âWhy should I, Mom? I donât want a baby under these circumstances.â
âAisling, stop this,â she pleads.
âWhy should I continue? He doesnât truly believe in it. Heâs just doing it to please me. He was ready to sleep with someone else, believing she could give him an heir, not me.â
âGive him one last chance, Aisling. Try the IVF one more time,â she says, her voice laced with hope.
âMom, if this cycle fails like the others, itâs exactly what they want. Weâve tried four times already. Theyâre waiting for another failure. Why should I put myself through that humiliation?â My voice is heavy with the weight of our past failures.
âYou might get pregnant this time, Aisling. Youâve had a break, given your body what it needs,â Mom tries to reason with me.
âIâm not doing it, Mom,â I state firmly.
She changes the subject. âGeneva called Anne this morning.â
âWhy?â Iâm curious about what they could have discussed.
âItâs all coming out now.â
âThatâs interesting. Did Duke mention who the psychic is?â
âHe said sheâs in Sterling.â
âSterling?â I repeat, my thoughts racing.
âYes.â
âDo you know when he saw her?â
âIn November.â
âThe same time he visited his grand-aunt?â
âIt seems so.â
âThatâs why he went there?â
âYes.â
âI thought it was to resolve things between him and his mom.â
âHe was with his aunt, not his mom.â
âWhere was his mom?â
âIâm not sure.â
âI assumed she was with them.â
âThey werenât on speaking terms then, remember?â
âIâm not sure what to believe anymore. Should we meet this psychic?â
âNo, itâs not necessary.â
âMom, we need to find out if this curse is real.â
âAisling, there is no curse in our family.â
âHow can you be so sure?â
âBecause no one has ever mentioned such a thing before.â
I jump up from the bed, my frustration boiling over. âExactly! No one mentioned it, so maybe you just didnât know. Itâs a secret thatâs been uncovered now.â
âAisling, thereâs no curse. Why canât you just believe me?â
âMom, your sister couldnât have kids. She had to adopt. What if theyâre right? If we find out more, maybe we can break this curse.â
âGeneva isnât barren! She just had issues because she married late. Thatâs why she adopted,â Mom snaps back.
Her outburst stops me cold. âWhy are you yelling? I still need to see this psychic.â
âItâs a waste of time.â
âBut I need answers, Mom. I need to understand this. If itâs true, then I have to let Duke go. He should marry someone who can give him an heir.â
âDonât say that, Aisling.â
âI canât stay with him if this is true. Itâll be easier to separate if we find out for sure. I need to see this psychic.â
âIf thatâs what you wantâ¦â she finally concedes.
I walk towards the door, then pause, turning back to her. âMom, can I ask you something?â
âOf course.â
âWhy is being a woman so hard? Why?â
âSo, I talked to Sally. Iâm meeting with Nora tomorrow. Sheâs organizing a family meeting next week. Anne and her aunt will be there to spill everything about this curse,â my aunt updates me via video call.
Sheâs determined, set on unraveling the truth.
âI wonât be there,â I say, my decision firm.
âWhy not?â
âAunt, I canât face his aunt or the matriarch. I canât bear to see any of them right now.â
âI get it, but itâs crucial toâ¦â
âI just canât, Aunt.â
âHow did the matriarch even get involved in such a scheme?â Genevaâs confusion mirrors my own.
âYou canât trust them, Aunt. I thought I knew them, but I was wrong.â
âWe all thought the matriarch was on your side. She wanted to abolish that outdated law, didnât she? What changed?â
âNothing makes sense anymore.â
âMaybe she let it happen because she didnât want Duke to leave his position?â
âI donât have the answers, Aunt.â
âWeâll uncover the truth, Aisling. I wonât let this go.â
âI appreciate it, Aunt.â
âWhen are you coming back?â
âTomorrow.â
âWhere will you stay?â
âNot at the Chateau, thatâs for sure.â
âYouâre always welcome at my place.â
âThanks, Aunt. But Iâve decided to stay with a friend in Montecito.â
âIf thatâs where youâll be comfortable.â
