Montaceito
Exiting Elsaâs guest room, Iâm on my phone, wrapping up a conversation. âThat sounds great, Adam. Thanks for your help⦠Yes, Iâll call you tomorrow. This is a temporary number⦠bye.â
After ending the call, I find Elsa in the kitchen, diligently slicing fruit. Staying at her place has been like a balm to my wounded soul. Elsaâs been nothing short of amazing
The aromatic mix of strawberries, kiwi, and pineapples calls to me, making my stomach growl audibly. Elsaâs eyes dance with mischief as she glances over. âHungry, are we?â
âIâm starving,â I reply, feeling a deep hunger gnawing at me.
Elsa looks up, one eyebrow arched. âWhy are you always so hungry lately?â
âBlame it on the hormones,â I laugh, reaching for a slice of kiwi.
â I guess.â Elsaâs eyes sparkle with curiosity. âSpeaking of which, who was that on the phone?â
âOh, just Adam,â I reply cool, easing into a kitchen chair.
âWhoâs Adam?â She pauses, tilting her head.
I canât help but grin. âHe was my first kiss back in Rutland.â The memory of that innocent kiss still sends a flutter through my stomach.
âHe what?â Elsaâs eyes widen in surprise.
I lean back, laughing. âYes, he gave me my first kiss. Itâs true. It was such a fleeting moment.â
âWhyâs he calling you now? Heard you might be single soon?â Elsaâs tone is playful but probing.
âChuckling, I grab another strawberry. âHeâs helping me scout a location for my café in Rutland.â
Elsaâs interest doesnât wane. âIs he married?â
âNope.â
âAnd is he⦠attractive?â
I smile, a warm feeling spreading through me. âYeah, he isâ¦still quite the sight.â
âThe thought of Adam, and the possibilities he represents, offers a rare moment of lightness amidst the chaos of my life.
âDate him,â Elsa says, her gaze intense and serious.
Iâm taken aback. âWhat?â
âNowâs your chance. Date him,â she urges. âAdam might be just the change you need.â
âBut Iâm still legally married,â I protest, the reality of my situation weighing on me.
âDo you want to move on from Duke?â Elsaâs voice softens.
I look at Elsa, her face expectant, clearly awaiting my reaction. âYes, I would love to,â I admit, the thought both liberating and scary.
âThen see Adam,â she encourages.
Iâm momentarily stunned by Elsaâs straightforwardness. Sure, Adam was a great guy, but dating him? That thought had never crossed my mind.
âIâm not sure,â I hesitate, unsure about jumping into something new.
âDating Adam might be good for you,â Elsa says, eyes sparkling with mischief, âMight help you put Duke behind.â
I shake my head.
Elsaâs eyes are alight with excitement. âItâll be fun. Invite him here, find any reason.â
I shake my head, still unsure. âI donât think I shouldâ¦â
She tilts her head, her playful demeanor not letting up. âI could reach out to Adam for you.â
I laugh, trying to brush off her insistence, but I can tell sheâs serious. âElsa, seriously? Why are you so invested in this?â
âYouâll thank me later,â she says confidently. âYouâve got a whole life ahead. You need to start living it.â
Right then, the phone rings. Elsa goes to answer it, leaving me with my whirlwind of thoughts. She comes back with a smirk. âItâs Duke.â
My heart skips a beat. âReally?â
She laughs. âNo, itâs Jordan.â
I quickly take the phone. âHello, Jordanâ¦â
âHey, Aisling. Listen, I need to postpone our meeting to next week,â Jordan says.
âWhy?â I ask, a sense of disappointment creeping in.
âI talked to Duke. Heâs meeting Dad on Friday to discuss everything.â
âWhatâs he hoping to achieve with that?â I wonder aloud.
âYour guess is as good as mine,â Jordan replies.
After hanging up, I return to the kitchen, feeling a storm of emotions. âDukeâs meeting with Dad on Friday.â
âFor what?â Elsa asks, concern etched on her face. âWhat could Duke possibly want now?â
âI donât know. Maybe to change his mind?â I speculate, crossing my arms protectively over my chest.
âHe must be up to something.â
âI need to call my mum,â I decide, feeling the need to brace myself for whatever Dukeâs meeting with my father might bring.
