Dean bursts into the nursery, his eyes searching as he asks, âWhereâs Aisling?â his voice carries a demanding edge,
Our baby is sleeping peacefully in his crib, and itâs almost noon, and that is the last I expect from him.
âSpring City, last I heard, â I lie smoothly. Attempting nonchalance, I adjust a stuffed bear on a nearby shelf.â
âThatâs not true,â he counters immediately.
âHow do you know?â I challenge, feigning ignorance.
âI looked for her there. Sheâs not in Spring City,â he says, frustration creeping into his voice.
I pretend to be shocked. âThatâs strange. She should be there.â
âYouâre hiding something,â he accuses, his gaze sharp.
I canât help but chuckle. âWell, keep looking then.â
His expression hardens. âAre you on her side? Do you support her leaving the marriage?â
âIf sheâs happy, yes,â I say firmly, believing in Aislingâs right to choose her own path.
My phone rings, interrupting our tense exchange. Glancing at the caller ID, I see itâs Daphne. âExcuse me, Dean. I need to take this.â
He nods, his jaw tight. âIâll be outside,â he says, leaving the room.
âDaphne,â I greet, cautiously.
Heather,â she responds, a hint of panic evident. âThereâs a problem. My work partner⦠sheâs distancing herself. I think she found out something.â
Alarm rises within me. âFound out what?â
âSheâs been avoiding me. Didnât speak to me at all yesterday,â she explains.
âThatâs odd. Maybe she saw something,â I speculate.
Daphneâs tone grows anxious. âOur supervisor called me. My partner wants a new assignment. She asked whatâs going on between us.â
I feel a knot of anxiety in my stomach. âOh no, thatâs not good.â
âI have no idea why sheâs suddenly keeping her distance,â Daphne says, sounding lost.
An idea strikes me. âI think she might have seen the pictures from my babyâs naming ceremony on Instagram. You were here with me.â
Daphne gasps, realization dawning. âYouâre right.â
âShe probably thinks youâre not being genuine with her,â I add.
Daphneâs voice quivers. âWhat am I going to do now?â
Her fear is palpable, and I wish I could reach through the phone to comfort her. As I try to think of a solution, I canât help but feel the weight of the complicated situation weâve found ourselves in.
