Yvonne bit her lip as she heard it.
She looked over at Joel.
The man was sitting quietly behind the desk with his hands on it. However, his eyes, always smiling, were deep and bottomless.
He was staring at Yvonne, making her feel as if all her clothes had been removed. Those eyes seemed to be able to see right through her, but others couldnât tell what she was thinking.
Yvonne lowered her head. âI admit I made a mistake, Joel. I shouldnât have bought a pill like that and left it in the room, thus giving Madame Florence the opportunity to steal it. But I really didnât break the law. Surely you canât say I broke the law just because someone stole the pill I bought and poisoned someone else with it, can you?â
Joel narrowed his foxy eyes.
He sneered, âYvonne, you think I made you come here to force you to admit your mistakes? Youâre wrong.â
Yvonne was taken aback. Then, she heard the manâs rich, honeyed voice. He said slowly, âIâm not a policeman who needs evidence to convict someone of a crime. Nor do I need you to admit anything. Both you and I know that very well.â
His voice was soft, but it also sounded like a voice out of hell, making Yvonneâs heart sink little by little.
Joel stood up. âSince thereâs no proof, I wonât turn you over to the police. Besides, youâre Uncle Ianâs daughter. Whatever treatment you should receive will have to wait until Uncle Ian wakes up. However, you no longer have to handle family affairs during this time.â
His words made Yvonne look at him suddenly.
As Ianâs only legitimate daughter, Yvonne had always enjoyed a very high status in the family.
In fact, legally, she had a closer relationship with Ian than Ianâs nephew Joel had with him.
So, while Joel managed the affairs of the company, Yvonne handled the affairs of the family. Even Florence, the housekeeper in charge of the familyâs internal affairs, was only his assistant.
Why was Louis still suffering at her hands despite detesting her so much? It was thanks to the fact that she was the one in control of the finances!
However, was Joel going to deprive her of her authority?
Yvonne couldnât help but reply, âWho do you intend to put in charge of managing the familyâs affairs, if not me, Nora? You canât do that. Iâm daddyâs only daughter while sheâs nothing but a shameful product of that womanâs betrayal of daddy. Arenât you embarrassing daddy if you do that?â
Seeing that she was still arguing even now, Joel slowly lowered his gaze and said, âYou can go now.â
Yvonne wanted to argue some more, but she knew Joel never changed his mind once he made up his mind.
She clenched her fists, took a deep breath and left the studio.
After she left, Quentin came out from somewhere, walked up to Joel and asked, âAre you really going to let her go like that, Joel?â
Joel rubbed his temples, feeling his head hurt.
He sighed and said, âUncle Ian is still in a coma. As his only daughter, itâs best that nothing happens to him for now. If Uncle Ian recovers, he will take care of her himself.â
Joel, who had been raised by Ian himself, knew Ianâs character very well.
What he hated most were schemes and conspiracies of this kind.
Besides, it seemed to him that Uncle Ian didnât seem to dislike Nora as muchâ¦.
Quentin couldnât help but ask, âWhat if Uncle Ian doesnât get it?â.
Joelâs gaze suddenly turned cold. âThen it will be time for her to get married once the two years of mourning for Uncle Ian is over.â
As for who sheâll marry and how much money sheâll be given once she does, Joel had the final say!
Quentin nodded.
He and Joel had the same opinion regarding Nora: neither of them liked her very much. After all, she was someone who was constantly in the shadows. Noraâs thoughts were like his own, unable to get out into the open.
As he thought about it, Joel asked, âHas Nora woken up?â
The sensitive Quentin discovered that Joelâs term of address to Nora had changed. From the distant and alienated âMiss Smith,â it had become âNoraâ⦠Ahem!
Quentin straightened his back and replied, âI donât know. She was still asleep when I left. She seemed so lazy, she didnât even work and only knew how to sleep every day in the past. But unexpectedly, she is actually the famous Anti? Thinking again, no wonder sheâs so rich!â
â⦠Rich?â
Quentin nodded. âYes. Donât you know? Louis has already become her fan just because sheâs rich!â
Joel couldnât help but comment dryly, âWhat a promising future that kid has.â
âI know, right?â
Quentin curved his lips in disdain. âI, for one, wonât bend just because sheâs rich. If she wants my recognitionâ¦. Youâll only get it if youâre the Big Sister of the Quinn School of Martial Arts!â
Joel: ââ¦â
Quentin looked at him again. âWhat does our little cousin have to do to earn your recognition, Joel?â.
Joel looked at him, picked up the company documents from the table and said, âWhat a meaningless question.â
Quentin curved his lips in disdain.
Joelâs phone vibrated at that moment. He looked at it and discovered it was a text message from Tanya: âPlease let me know when Nora gets back.â
Joel sent her a question mark.
Tanya responded immediately. As if she was eager to distance herself from him, she wrote: âNora is not answering my calls, So I guess sheâs still in detention! Cherry misses her mother. Tell her to pick up her daughter when she returns.â
Seeing the message, Joel immediately got up, grabbed the car key and went outside.
Quentin was taken aback. âWhere are you going Joel, arenât you going to wait for our little cousin to come home?â
Joel didnât stop. He replied, âIâm going to pick up the little girl and bring her home.â
Quentin: â?â
âGirl?â
Wasnât it the weekend? It didnât look like Mia had gone to the garden, thoughâ¦.

Nora only left the room when she finished talking to Florence.
She didnât really blame Florence. In fact, her loyalty to Ian made her sigh in admiration. How old were they now? There were still people who could go to such lengths for their masters.
No wonder Joel hadnât thrown her out after taking over the family.
Morris asked, âHow do you do, Miss Smith?â
Nora gave him her serious answer. âThe soundproofing in the interrogation room is actually quite good. You might try using it if you ever have insomnia in the future.â
Morris: ââ¦â
I was asking if Florence had said something!!! I wasnât asking about the interrogation room!!!!!
But as he watched the unaffected woman in front of him, he was silent for a moment before finally saying, âI apologize for my earlier actions, Miss Smith. Iâm sorry.â
Nora raised her eyebrows as she heard him.
Her lips curved into a smile and she suddenly said, âApology accepted, Captain Ford, but Iâd still like to ask a favor of you.â
âWhat is it?â
Nora lowered her eyes and asked, âCan you tell me what kind of case Iâm on?â
Her head had cleared after waking up.
Morris was silent for a while. He looked up and stared at her for a long time, apparently considering whether he could tell her. Finally, he stepped aside and said, âLetâs talk over there, Miss Smith.â
Indeed, there were some things he no longer had to keep from her.
Nora nodded. She gave Justin a comforting look and followed Morris into the confidential room next door.
