Laurenâs pupils shrank.
The biggest humiliation of her life was when she got involved in Hermanâs marriage and became the busybody shunned by everyone. Whenever people talked about her, they called her the homewrecker who had managed to become the legitimate wife.
Yet Nora had brought it up in public, in front of everyone. It was just infuriating.
Laurenâs face was filled with anger. She asked, âWhat is the meaning of this, Ms. Smith?â
âDonât you dare make the bet with me?â
Nora raised her eyebrows.
Cornered, the angry and anxious Lauren could only say, âFine.â
She clenched her fists tightly.
To return to Hunt Manor, as well as to return to the pinnacle of status in New York, she really wasnât holding anything back. However, when he thought about it carefully, nothing could go wrong with that flower pot anyway. Nora was at a complete disadvantage when she made the bet with it.
To be honest, the moment Nora said the ingredient was too strong, Lauren had already felt a little guilty. In fact, she had drawn some conclusions from her time studying medicine abroad over the years.
However, she firmly believed that even if something really went wrong, it would only happen at a later stage.
There was no way it would happen in an hour.
She was sure to win the bet.
When she thought of it this way, Lauren no longer felt so unhappy, because the bet was clearly disadvantageous to Nora.
After the two parties made the bet, Lauren summoned some people and ordered them, âKeep a close eye on this pot of Phantom Orchids. If anything goes wrong, you are to let me know immediately.â
As rare as the Phantom Orchids were, to Lauren they were nothing more than a pot of flowers. What mattered to her was not the flowers, but winning the bet.
She spoke very loudly, everyone heard her. Lauren explained with a smile, âAfter all, weâve already made the bet. Iâm just afraid that someone will deliberately spoil the flowers in an hour because sheâs a sore loser. It would be terrible if people refused to pay their bet when that happened.â
Iris, however, ignored her. Instead, she pulled Nora to the side, lowered her voice, and asked, âTell me the truth, are you Orchidiance?â
Noraâs lips curved into a smile and she nodded.
Iris: ââ¦â
She stared at Nora with a stunned look. âOrchidiance is the only person capable of curing Matthewâs flowers, why didnât I think of that? No, it was because youâre too young. I didnât expect Orchidiance to be so young, I always thought she would be as old as me, or maybe even older.â
Nora looked at her.
After she spoke, Irisâs immediate thought was that she now had someone to treat the flowers in her greenhouse, if anything ever happened to them.
Instead, she let out a huge sigh.
She said, âAt first I thought there were only a few people in this world who can cure Matthewâs Ghost Orchids because those flowers are really very difficult to treat. When you said you could cure them, I thought you were just gambling. But I didnât expect that what was a one in ten thousand chance for me would instead be a 100% sure chance for you.â Nora replied, âSo, you need to tell me your story now.â
Iris was taken aback for a moment. Finally, she waved her hand and said, âAh, well, never mind, it was all planned!â.
She had also thought things through for herself. By adopting a gamblerâs mentality with this, she was also trying to give herself a glimmer of hope for the future.
She also didnât want to grow old and die in that suburban village and be separated from Justin for the rest of her life.
This had all been preordained for a long time, that was all.
She said, âI hope you both donât hate me after hearing my story.â
Back then, she had protected Justin from everything. Now that her son was grown, it was time for him to repay his debt.
Iris sighed.
Nora patted her on the shoulder. âWeâre not afraid.â
When one was young, their mother was an all-powerful figure who protected them from everything Now that they had grown up, they were willing to be that all-powerful figure for their mother.
The two chatted for almost an hour. When the hour passed after they made the bet, Lauren looked at the orchid. Seeing that it was still blooming beautifully, she let out an immediate sigh of relief.
Then she walked over to Iris and Nora. âMiss Smith, youâve lost.â
Nora looked at her, âStill two minutes to go.â
Lauren smiled and said, âOnly two minutes left, but that pot of flowers is now blooming even more beautifully than before. Thereâs no risk of it wilting at all, so you two have definitely lost.â
âThatâs not necessarily true.â
Nora stood up and looked at the time on her phone.
Lauren curved her lips in disdain and said, âMs. Smith, to be honest, weâre all family. How can there be hard feelings between family? Why do we have to draw such a clear line between us? Why donât we just forget about the bet? So that it doesnât reflect badly on us. I am not one to hold grudges against my young ones either. However, Elder Mrs. Hunt is getting old. Herman has always wanted to be filial to his mother and be by her side, so letâs not let the Hunts hold him back anymoreâ¦â
No sooner had she said that than a security guard came running up, startled, and said, âMrs. Hunt, this is terrible!â
Lauren was taken aback â she turned around and saw that the security guard was actually the one she had instructed to keep a close eye on the Phantom Orchids just a moment ago!
