Chapter 4

“Nate?” I blurted out, I could feel the anger radiating out of Daniel’s body and seeping through mine.

Like what the actual fuck?

“I thought you had work,” he narrowed his eyes looking back and forth between Daniel and I, talk about weird silence with Daniel placing his hand on my back I instantly moved forward to get away from his cold touch.

While Nate on the other hand seemed a little too disappointed in me being here, I didn’t think he knew about me and Daniel.

“Is she your new toy?” Nate asked in disgust, his tone was even harsher than Daniel’s but I guess that wouldn’t make a difference since they both did look a bit the same but only Daniel looked a little older with a cold, stern face.

“No,” he replied irritated, “she’s the one I told you about, only marrying her for a while before,” he flicked his fingers showing that he was going to get rid of me, right there and then it felt like my heart was ripped out of my chest, squeezed and then jammed back into my heart roughly.

Something was off, the expression on Nate’s face softened as Daniel excused himself to answer his phone,

“So your Luke’s friend?” Nate asked slowly, confused at the same time. Not trusting myself to speak I nod slightly before clutching tightly onto my bag. Daniel entered back into the scene, bloody marvellous grabbing his coat he pushes past me stopping at the door.

“Keep an eye on her,” he motions towards me, “I’m staying at Amy’s tonight,” he smirked on his way out obviously directing it towards me. Keeping my gaze fixed on the ground I wait till the door is shut before running upstairs finding the small room and locking myself in.

I sunk down against the door, tears leaking through my eyes.

He’s spending the night with another girl.

He’s spending the night with someone else.

He’s spending the night with Amy.

Shrugging off my bag, I unlock the door before someone attempts to break it down and settle down at the tiny desk trying to finish the work I’ve missed.

Two hours later I was finishing up three essay’s and reading more on forensic science, it was the only thing that intrigued me and when you witness a murder not any murder but the murder of someone close to you, the person who nurtured you killed in front of your eyes by someone else you thought you loved was hard.

Slamming my books shut, I look at the antique clock that was sitting at the other side of the room displaying eleven thirty on it. The house was awfully quite, so I took this chance to go downstairs and grab a bite to eat in case the repeat of the morning happened again. My feet were greeted by the cold floor; it was like me against the world as it always was what different could it have been now.

Only now, I’m someone else’s property and who knows what the outcome of this is going to turn out like, opening the door of the fridge that was full which reminded me that I had to use my money to shop for their food.

Magnifico.

Taking out the first thing that comes to my hand was a snicker bar, gladly I trotted outside towards the garden to get some fresh air.

“Find lights in the beautiful sea,” I murmured, “I chose to be happy, you and I...,” humming the rest of the tune I looked up at the sky hoping I could wish on a shooting star.

“Hey mum,” I whispered to the night sky, “I hope wherever you are, you’re fine,” tears were running down my face, “I love you mum, always.”

“What happened to her?” I jumped at the voice behind me, Nate.

“Accident,” I lied softly, my heart boiled up I really wanted to tell the whole world the truth but I had to wait, wait till I got my qualifications and then I could go and arrest the person myself.

“I’m sorry,” he muttered, Nate came over and joined me standing next to the wall he actually looked confused, which made me wonder why.

“What’s wrong?” I asked him, he seemed thrown off track by my question but recovered quickly.

“Just surprising what a small world we live in eh?” he let out a small humorous laugh, I opened up the snicker bar and bit a chunk of it off biting on it slowly.

“Mhmm, this is so good,” I thought aloud, Nate chuckled at my reaction to one snicker bar how very lady-like of me.

“Never had one?” he asked curiously in disbelief, I shook my head slowly and went back to eat the lovely bar, I ate slowly so that it could last longer because this might be the only bite I got to eat for the next three days or something.

His hand went around my shoulder, I froze almost instantly and he realised the effect. I stepped away from him and looked up to his face,

“I’m married Nate,” I informed him to which he snorted,

“Yeah, and I suppose that it’s fine that he’s out with someone else,” he retorted, “doing God knows what plus he’s going to divorce you in  three months!” His word sliced through my heart,

“No he won’t,” I said hesitantly trying to reassure myself.

“Yes he will,” Nate shouted, “don’t you see that he’s out today with Amy, he already propose to her yesterday,” well that was news.

More tears came flooding out; Nate grazed his hand through his hair in frustration. The was an awkward silence between us before he spoke,

“Can’t we give us a try?” he asked nervously, at once hearing his words I shook my head,

“No sorry I can’t Nate,” I mumbled, “you don’t understand I’m not cheating on him,” I stood firm in my decision while Nate looked at me incredulously like I was crazy, maybe I’m going crazy.

“Do you know how many girls would kill to be in your position right now?” he sneered, it was like his dark side came to life he grabbed my upper right arm and pushed me against the wall.

“Most girls would love this,” he smirked, “cheating on their husbands,” his hand trailed down my back before resting on my thigh.

I stepped down on his foot hard; his mouth stunk of beer suggesting that he was drunk. He moved back still in daze,

“Well I got news for you,” I shouted, “I’m not most girls!” Running out of the garden into the kitchen then speeding up the stairs I crashed into one of the guys who dropped me off to school.

“What you doing here?” he roughly pushed me against him pulling me up the stairs,

“Ouch,” I hissed grazing my right foot against the sharp surface.

How could this get any better, he pushed me into my room and I fell on the floor hard before he slammed the door shut on me. My back killed me, I crawled towards the small bed and slowly hopped onto it before falling into another nightmare.

“No, stop!” I screamed, jolting awake I realised that it was just a nightmare, it was always the same I was always trying to stop the person hurting my mum but it always happened the other way. My mum always got hurt and I was left their shattered to face the wrath of the person.

This person, I had so much disgust towards him that I couldn’t even say his name. My antique clock at the end of the room told me it was just five minutes after six so I stripped the thin sheets off myself, made the bed and trotted towards the shower.

It took me exactly fifteen minutes to shower; I applied some shampoo on my hair and scrubbed myself clean washing all the dirt away. My thoughts went back to last night, Daniel was planning on divorcing me but this couldn’t be right and this couldn’t happen I promised my mother that I’d stay in one marriage and not mess about which was the reason why Nate popped up in my head.

Rummaging through the small wardrobe I grabbed some run down shirt and an old pair of jeans again, not bothering how I look I leave my wet hair open and run downstairs to make the breakfast for everyone. I could hear little murmurs in the living room but I didn’t dare go inside it, I sighed before starting to make breakfast for everyone.

Opening the fridge, I inspected it for a good five minutes before taking out bacon and sausages then I started doing my work. I got a few curious glances from the bulky guys that came into the kitchen at the smell of the food, I gotta say the food looked pretty delicious plus I made some lovely pancakes. Not sure why I was in a good mood but Daniel didn’t really seem to like my happiness.

“Can’t you hurry up?” he sneered standing next to me, I was holding the pan in one hand shivering in fear about what he was going to do next the guys behind seemed a little shock at his outburst too but smirked at it shaking their heads.

Quickening my pace I got the plates out placed them on the table, placing a bit of everything for each of the guy’s and passing it to them. Most didn’t acknowledge me, a few nodded in response and only two of them mumbled ‘thank you’.

Since Daniel wasn’t sitting down it only made sense that he wasn’t eating but what was the fun in that right, he planned on making my life a living hell.

“Where’s mine?” he sniggered, I totally forgot about it so I jogged towards the cupboard to grab a plate but was stopped in the process, “watch were your going,” he smirked at me clearly enjoying terrorising me.

I stayed neutral, side stepped him and reach out to the grab the plate but this time my hand was roughly shoved behind my back. I was now facing the guys eating with Daniel twisting my arm up behind my back.

“What do we say when we do something wrong?” Daniel asked, a few guys choked on their drinks, some starting laughing and others just grinned enjoying the show.

“I-I’m sorry,” I stuttered, I felt Daniel’s warm body vibrate as a harsh laugh came out of it. He walked out of the kitchen; guess he didn’t want breakfast in the first place.

School was an even bigger pain, I tried my hardest to keep on down low to avoid Nate at any cost but of course once again fate kicked my ass towards him, how lucky was I.

“You know your too good for him,” i was currently sitting down in the quiet place at the library with my eyes closed, taking deep breath but jumped hitting my head hard on the darw above me.

I hissed in pain, Nate came over and took a look at my head. He touched the bump that formed and I cried out in pain, “Ouch!” He took one finally look before pulling me up onto my feet, I felt dizziness sway over me my eyes were too weak so I propped myself up against the wall.

“C’mon Sidney,” his voice was soothing but I winced as he reached to grab hold of me, “I won’t hurt you I promise,” he sounded promising , so I took the opportunity to believe him and let him guide me to the nurse’s office.

“Oh dear,” the nurse was annoying, her voice pierced through the air making my head pound even more, “I’m afraid you’re going to have to go home,” giving me some tablets, I threw them into my mouth holding out my hand to Nate motioning to him for my bag.

“You want me to let you,” he said, “go home like that?” I didn’t bother arguing so I followed closely behind, there goes my free time I thought I’m going to have even more work to catch up with now.

The car ride was in silence, neither of us said anything and to me it was fine. My eyelids felt heavy, so I closed them a little and a little more until I was fully unconscious not knowing what happened next I fell into a dreamless sleep.

My hand instantly went to my head as I lifted it, the pain returned and it took me a moment to understand what had happened. I was in the guest room, back at Daniel’s house who wouldn’t like it the least bit. Closing my eyes I sighed resting my head against the mattress, but after thirty minutes or so I summoned the courage to get up and make my way towards my room.

I heard tiny murmurs coming from the room down the hall which was Daniel’s, so me being curious I trotted off to see who it was. The door was slightly ajar and sat on it was a woman in her early twenties not much older than me probably three years at twenty-one with bright red lips and bright red nails. She held an iPhone to her ear saying,

“Yes dad,” she replied, “I’ve got him tied around my finger,” she let out a hearty laugh, I took it in but the information was too confusing it wasn’t making any sense.

“Don’t worry,” she reassured her father, “the night of the engagement party we’ll shoot him,” she sounded really happy, and then it clicked.

Engagement.

Girl who I assumed was Amy sitting on Daniel’s bed.

Then it sunk in, Amy was playing Daniel who was in love with her. She had him tied around her finger and she was going to kill him for what though I didn’t understand.

“Dad have I ever failed you?” she answered to prove her point, “He’s going to hand me over everything by then, don’t you worry I got everything under control.” She said a few other things but I didn’t listen to that because all the thoughts in my head were about Daniel, I had to tell him this.

“Oh Daniel,” she laughed at herself throwing her phone on the bed, “you don’t know who you’re dealing with,” her high-pitched laugh made my head hurt, I made a move to get out of her only hitting myself against the wall.

“Who’s there?” Amy shouted, I panicked and ran down to the guest room I was in and lay down acting asleep.

She was going to kill Daniel. I had to tell him, she wanted his money and wealth. She doesn’t really love him, he’s trapped in this mess and he doesn’t even know it.

I had to save him, I had to save Daniel even if it’s one of the last things I do because I took a vow, a vow to protect him and even though it doesn’t stand for him it meant everything to me.

I had to save the Mafia.
