A supernatural female being associated with the air, seas, woods, water or particular locations. In Greek myth nymphs generally animate or maintain nature, for where they live. Usually depicted as beautiful, young and graceful maidens. Not necessarily immortal, but live many years.

Meliae are nymphs of ash trees. Naiads are nymphs of rivers or streams. Nereids are nymphs of calm seas. Oreads are nymphs of mountains.
