Shane arrived at the hospital, made his way to Scottâs office, and greeted him. âScott.â
Scott was pleasantly surprised. âShane, what brought you here, my friend?â
âI was just passing by the hospital on business and thought Iâd drop by to see you.â Shane placed the gift. he was carrying on Scottâs desk and smiled. âI heard youâve made new discoveries in the field of artificial hearts. Congratulations!â
âItâs a bit early for congratulations now. Wait until I develop an artificial heart that can truly be implanted in the body, then you can congratulate me,â Scott joked with Shane, the atmosphere lively from the banter of two clever people.
Scott thought about how Shane had once shown an interest in the goddess he admired and how he had grown close to her over the years. He felt a sense of pride.
After all, the goddess who was once out of reach now actively contacted him repeatedly because of her child. He thoroughly enjoyed the way the goddess tried to please and get close to him.
âShane, do you remember our medical school goddess, Leah?â asked Scott.
Shane thought, âIf it werenât for Leah, would I come to see you? Whatâs so great about a grown man like you?â
âI do. What about her?â replied Shane.
Scott was pleased with himself as he said, âSheâs at the hospital. How about we have dinner together tonight?â
âI can do that, but Iâm not sure if itâs convenient since sheâs a married woman,â Shane said with a hint of bitterness.
Scott instantly thought that Shane still held unresolved feelings and said with a smile, âShane, I canât believe youâre still such a romantic fool!â
âDonât talk nonsense. Iâm a married man. If my wife hears you, sheâll make me sleep in the doghouse,â
Shane said seriously but nonsensically.
âI never expected you to be afraid of your wife!â remarked Scott.
Shane said in a low voice, âScott, youâre mistaken. Iâm not afraid of my wife. I cherish her! She gave birth to our offspring and takes care of our parents. Shouldnât I treat her well? But you wouldnât understand this feeling. After all, you married our professorâs most precious gem. You have to treat her like a queen, right?
âYouâ¦â Scott felt a wave of turmoil. When he was young, he chose a shortcut in life in order to avoid decades of hard work. Little did he know that this shortcut seemed easy to take but was filled with invisible dangers.
As a son-in-law, his wife had the support of his professor, and even their children didnât bear his last name. The bitterness and sorrows he carried in his heart were indescribable. People only saw his outward shine, unaware of the inner pain he had no one to share with.
âScott, you mentioned that Leah is at the hospital. Why? Is she ill?â asked Shane.
âNo, itâs her daughter whoâs ill with a serious heart condition. If they canât find a suitable heart soon, wonât last another three months!â replied Scott.
she Shane furrowed his brows. âI remember she only has one daughter. If something happens to her daughter, can she handle it?â
âThatâs why I suggested having dinner together tonight, so we can chat about our youthful days and comfort her in her distress,â Scott said, pretending.
âOkay, Iâll ask my wife for permission,â Shane said, playing along.
As Shane sought permission from his wife, Scott had to leave him alone in the ward as he had an emergency surgery to attend to.
Lilianeâs spirits remained high inside the ward as she and her mother sifted through wedding proposals sent by a wedding planning company, making their choices
