Steffan was quite a sentimental man. He was still using the same phone number he had five years ago.
âSteffan, itâs me. Can we talk about adopting Sunshineâ¦â
Esther added from the side, âAnd Twinkleâ¦â
Steffanâs light, mocking tone reached Estherâs ears. âXara, you couldnât even be a good mother to your own son. Now you want to be a mother to others?â
Xaraâs pretty face flushed with shame. âSteffan, Esther only wants us to adopt them in name. Itâs not like we are really adopting them-â
Before Xara could finish her sentence, Steffan coldly interrupted her. âHas Jacob agreed?â
Xara was momentarily startled, her grip tightening on the phone as she sought Jacobâs opinion.
âJacob, can we temporarily help Esther adopt Twinkle and Sunshine?â
Esther was also watching Jacob anxiously. âJacob, Iâm begging youâ¦.â she said pleadingly.
âI agree.â
Those two words from Jacob were like music to Esther and Xaraâs ears.
âThank you, Jacob.â Esther was incredibly grateful. Jacob was truly a good child.
âSteffan, did you hear that? Jacob agreed. Can we go and adopt Sunshine and Twinkle now?â
âXara, what time is it now?â Only then did Xara realize that it was already dark outside.
âSo, first thing tomorrow⦠Can we go to the church and adopt Sunshine and Twinkle?â
Steffan grunted in acknowledgment and hung up the phone, his demeanor still cold and indifferent.
Facing Estherâs worried gaze, Xara was ecstatic. âEsther, itâs all settled. You donât have to worry about Sunshine and Twinkle. Steffan still has some influence, and Iâm confident the adoption will be successful.
âHowever, the process probably canât be completed in a day. Do you want to wait until itâs finalized before returning to your country? Or would you like to head back first?â
âIâll wait until tomorrow when you guys go to adopt them before returning home,â Esther said.
She wanted to ensure that Xara and Steffan could fully adopt Sunshine and Twinkle. Returning home without confirmation would only leave her more anxious.
âOkay.â
Estherâs face lit up with joy, and she immediately shared this good news with Anna.
Seeing Estherâs happiness, Xara suggested, âWhy donât we let the children continue playing? We can have some time to talk.â
âSure.â
After their rushed parting in their previous meeting, Esther and Xara had been apart for at considerable time. Yet, human connections could be remarkably unique. Certain people emanated a sense of familiarity right from the first encounter, and Esther and Xara were a perfect example.
Now, they sat at the Sandersonsâ mini bar amidst an ambiance of vibrant, twinkling lights.
Xara poured a glass of wine, swiftly downing, its contents before asking, âEsther, if you were in my position, would you consider having another child with Bradley?â
