The flap swept aside again, and more boot-stomping thundered across the floor as Yanek rushed in.
âWhat the hell is...
Yanek stopped short as he took in the sight of Sevei lying on the bed and registered the of him. Then he began to cackle with glee as Seveiâs face turned various shades of red.
âSir, you have got the tent pitched there,â Yanek hooted. âWhat the hell did he do to you?â
âHe healed me,â Sevei answered through clenched teeth.
âAnd it did âItâs not funny,â Sevei said pitifully. âIt hurts. Stop laughing and get me a quilt or something. I canât move.â
âI donât know that a quilt will help matters,â Yanek noted, but he obediently fetched one from a cabinet of clean bedding and brought it to him. âHere, pull this over,â he said, trying to hand a corner of the quilt to Sevei.
âI canât move,â Sevei said again. His fingers twitched, then fell still. âI canât move anything.â
âSo... you probably canât do anything about then, huh?â Yanek began to snort with laughter again.
âYan...â
âSorry... Ah! Iâve been healed by Alchemists before, but nothing like happened.â
âWell, whoever healed you probably wasnât a SADISTIC ASSHOLE!!!â Sevei shouted, eyeing the tent doorway with a malevolent glare.
Yanek shook the quilt out over him, then pulled it up to his shoulders. Sitting on the bed next to Sevei he tucked the quilt around him as if he were putting a child to bed., then leaned over him with a hand on either side.
âVei,â he said solemnly. âIâm only going to say this right now... because youâre paralyzed and canât hit me for it.â
Seveiâs eyes narrowed warily. A sly smile played over Yanekâs lips.
âIf you want him, just go for it.â
Seveiâs face froze, his chest filling with cold as a fleeting fearful expression slid across his face before he averted his gaze nervously.
âWhat...â he muttered, his lips trembling slightly, âwhat nonsense are you spouting now?â
âVei,â Yanek said firmly, his previous mirth exchanged for earnest gravity. âHow long have we known each other? We have trained together, fought together, eaten together, bathed together... you think I didnât figure this out about you a long time ago?â
The cold wrapped itself around every part of Seveiâs body. If he hadnât already been immobilized, he certainly would be from this abject terror. He flicked a glance at Yanekâs face, unable to meet his eyes.
Yanek squeezed his shoulders.
âYou are my General,â he said. âThe best Iâve ever served under, by the way. And besides that, youâre my heart-brother. If you think that would change anything, then maybe this friendship has been one-sided all along-â
âNo,â Sevei said, his voice rough from the knot gathering in his throat. âNo, Yan...â His eyes had turned glassy, and he turned his face away to hide his pained expression.
âHey!â Yan said, his tone alight with renewed humor, âare... are you ?!â
Sevei blinked his eyes dry and tried to clear his throat. âWhat... of course not...â he said petulantly. âAnd why mention bathing? I never looked at you...â
âOf course you did. Iâm gorgeous.â
âI didnât...!â
âNo,â Yanek conceded. âYouâve always been meticulously careful not to look.
what gives you away.â
Sevei stared at the wall, mulling this over. âHuh.â
He finally turned to face Yanek, who looked down at him with a warm smile.
âAnd Iâm serious,â Yanek said, shaking him gently. âIf heâs the one, go get him. Not this minute, obviously, but when youâre up again, just go... grab him and have your way with him. What are you waiting for?â
âI already did,â Sevei said, instantly regretting that heâd let that slip.
âYou tried?â Yanek cajoled. âWait... you succeeded? ...what!? ...how? ...when!?â
Sevei rolled his eyes and bit his lip. âIn Tharlburg... the night before we came over.â
âThat was ?!â Yanek was positively giddy with this revelation.
âI didnât know who he was. If I had, I never would have...â
âOh, yes you would. It may not be my thing, but Iâve got eyes. If heâs got a sister who looks like that... well, sheâd be a fancy noblewoman who wouldnât look at me twice, but you get my meaning.â
Sevei tried very hard not to smile at that, mostly failing, but the smile faded quickly.
âHeâs not interested in continuing,â he said quietly.
âZarayan Sevei, you are far too old to be that naive,â Yanek admonished. âLook at the state youâre in.
is not normal Alchemist bullshit. This is bullshit. Even for a prank, this is awfully... intimate.â
âHeâs my colleague.â
âScrew that! Where else are people like us supposed to ever meet anyone? If I stay in the army much longer, Iâll have to try for one of those Sekkha ladies, and sheâll probably want to hog-tie me and whip me and stick things... wait. On second thought, that could be rather interesting...â
âGreat,â Sevei sighed. âNow I have to ask that Alchemist if he can burn that image out of my brain. And thatâs another thing â heâs an Alchemist. And a noble. You know how I feel about them.â
âYou think itâs possible theyâre not all that bad?â Yanek asked. âIâm thinking he might be an exception.â
Sevei fought another involuntary smile. âYeah...â he murmured. âHe is... exceptional.â
âThere you go,â Yanek grinned.
âSo why would he want ?â Sevei muttered sadly. âAnd weâre fighting a war here. That is so much more important-â
âHey! Heâll want you because youâre a catch. Youâre a damn good friend, and a damn good soldier, and as for the war, our jobs will be a damn sight easier if you two drop this hostility and get on friendlier terms.
is up to you.â
A ghost of memory whispered into Seveiâs ear, He stifled a groan as his pelvis contracted, sending him squirming beneath the quilt again.
Yanek stood and straightened the quilt around Sevei. âDid he say how long youâd be like this?â
Sevei shook his head. âHe told me to rest for two hours.â
âShhh...
? Well, Iâd help you out, but I donât think we need to be close,â Yanek laughed.
âNo.â
âAnd you know Iâm strictly for the ladies.â
âYes.â
âTheyâre just so soft and squishy.â Yanek raised his hands to chest-height and crooked his fingers in obscene clutching motions.
âYes.â
â
is probably not squishy right now.â
âYan,â Sevei said calmly, his voice revealing his exhaustion, âwill you please fuck off?â
âRight away, General!â
âOh, now you remember that Iâm your General?â
Making his way to the door, Yanek cocked both forefingers in his direction with a cheeky grin.
âThe best Iâve ever served under. Donât forget I said that part when you can move again.â
