Lesson Thirty-Six - One Day The People Who Never Believed In You Will Talk About How They Met You.
"Riker give me it!"
"Miss Lyra would you like me to come back later?"
I turned around and seen our head butler Richard standing at the grand doors of our library. I had called him over earlier but in that time Riker had came in to basically annoy the living shit out of me. I had four brothers and none of them annoy me as much as this man that stood in front of me now.
"No Richard it's fine." I said turning my full attention to one of my favourite people in the world. "I was just wondering when my father will be home?"
Richard seemed thoughtful for a moment before answering. "In two weeks Miss Lyra. He's currently in Germany with some of shareholders."
Sighing I let my shoulders slump. That wasn't what I wanted to hear. Why was the man never around when you actually needed him. Though saying that he wasn't around very much these days.
"Thanks Richard."
"No problem Miss Lyra." And with that he nodded and walked back out of the room.
"What's wrong with you?"
Turning back to face Riker I could see his infamous smirk. It had made him look like someone from the stories your parents used to tell you as a child. The type of man that would break the hearts of every good girl they ever come across. The type of man that would burn down the city just for kicks. He was the type of person that we were told to stay away from. I was Lyra Anderson though, I was just as much of a devil as he was.
"Give me the phone Riker." It was no longer me asking him, I was telling him and he could see the change in my tone.
"Nope." He responded by taunting me by holding the phone in front of him.
It was my mothers phone. The phone I had Damon switch out for a different one. I didn't know how he did it. All I knew what that I couldn't fault his work.
Riker's sleeves were rolled up on his arms showing the tattoos that ran up them. So much detail in every movement. Who ever did the tattoo was a master of their art and I could tell they took great pride in it.
"I can track them better Princess." He pocked the phone and I gave him a raised eyebrow. "Who ever it is, is more likely someone I would know than you. Between all these shootings and everything going on in the city it's better if I deal with this."
"Are you saying I can't defend myself?" I was actually offended right now. I couldn't believe he thought I couldn't look after myself after everything I've been through. Between the shooting and being kidnapped I think I've proven over and over again that I could handle anything.
He scoffed and gave me a pointed look. "You joking right?" I was about to argue with him but he went on. "Of course I know you can handle this shit. Fuck, you can probably handle this shit better than any person I know. This though is my problem. This is city it mine, so what ever is going on in it right now is my responsibility."
"This person is targeting my family and friends so I want to be involved." I gave Riker a hard look. I'd be damned before I let anything happen to my family. "They can't do what they are doing and get away with it and I'm not stupid Riker. I know you know who is doing this or at least what group."
Riker grabbed him by the back of neck and pulled me close his face only inches away from mine. For the first time in a long time I felt my heartbeat speed up. I was normally so cool and collected but right now with him standing right there in front of me something was different.
"When I know for sure who is doing this I will tell you princess don't worry." I could see something in his eyes. He was telling the truth, I could read it all right there and I didn't know what to say or think. "I promise I will tell you but right now I need to go and trace this phone, alright?"
I didn't know when things started to change between the two of us. He had automatic just planted himself in my life and I didn't even notice it.
"Ok." I caught my thoughts before speaking again. "They're trying to fuck with me and my family and I want to give them some payback."
He let out a deep chuckle but never pulled away. "That's my Princess."
Before I even had time to register anymore thoughts his lips were on mine. Shock was the only word for it right now. His hand was still on the back on neck pushing us into a even deeper kiss and I quickly responded. There was something different about this one. Yea sure I've kissed Riker before but nothing like this. This was a real one. Not one we do to try and annoy the other.
Pulling away he looked at me carefully before a cheeky grin over took his features as he bit his bottom lip for a moment. "I'll see you later."
In that moment as I watched him turn around and leave I seen him for what he really was. He was an Heir to one of the biggest Mafias in the world. He belonged to world that was far more dangerous than my own and I was heading head first straight into it. I had went down this path before with Zane but there was something very different about this one. Riker was the true ruler of this city. I was the future face of this city, but he was the one that picked if this city would rise or fall. There was no police force or army in the world that would change that. His family made the rules.
What he didn't know though. Was that I could play this game better than him.
Riker liked to believe he was always ten steps ahead of everyone else but I was smarter than him. I knew I was. I had to be.
Turning to my focus to my homework that was sitting in one of the large wooden tables. First I need to finish this shit before I could do anything about the real world.
An hour through writing my english essay my brother came in. I set my pen down and leaned back in the chair. It was clear he wanted something, he wouldn't be in here otherwise.
"What do you want dear brother?" I asked mocking him as he sat across from me.
"Need your help little sister." He said coping me. I glared at him. He was only older by seven minutes.
"Then welcome to my domain what can I do for you?" I picked up my pen acting like a business woman and he rolled my eyes at me.
"I need you to be serious for a minute."
I narrowed my eyes at him but nodded for him to continue. What the hell had he got himself into now.
"I need you to do something for me."
"What did you do?" I asked already rolling my eyes. "Who do I need to bribe, blackmail, flirt or threaten with this time?"
Yes I have done all those things for my brother. Got to love sibling love sometimes but I would do anything for him.
He looked at me for a few moments and I could see the seriousness on his face. What ever he wanted me to do he wasn't messing around. He had got himself into something deep.
"Ok when I tell you, you can't freak out." I nodded slowly before he continued. "I need you to ask Sky if she would go out with me."
I looked at my brother, then blinked, then blinked again with a completely blank face. Then I burst out laughing. Like properly laughing my head off like a crazy person.
"Are you actually for real?" I got out between my tears of laughter. "Sky has always liked you." I pointed out once I got over my laughing fit.
"She used to have a thing for Chase though did she not?"
I rolled my eyes and gave him a pointed look. "All girls have a thing for Chase, I haven't came across one girl in my school who wouldn't try to jump him. She's had a proper crush on you though from day one."
"Are you serious?" He grinned out.
"I'm probably going to get killed for this by her so I would say goodbye to me now but yes I'm serious. Though if you tell her I told you I'll have your god damn head."
I knew Sky would find out it was me that told him but I was hoping that she would kind of let it pass if she got with him. Well I would pray she would let it pass. I was scared off no one but Sky. That sweet innocent look could turn demonic and I've seen it before. Never again, I still have the scar from that day.
Damon got up from his seat and gave me a big hug before kissing the top of my head. "You're the best sister ever have I told you that before?"
"I'm your only sister." I pointed out.
"Which is why no one can take that from you." He ran out the door before I could hit for that comment so I just glared at his back as he ran out the door like a love sick puppy.
Turning my attention to my homework once again my phone started to go off. I sighed in annoyance. I was never going to get it finished. It was due tomorrow and I had only started. Don't judge.
My annoyance was quickly taken away though once I seen who it was. Ben, he was one of our companies IT workers and one of the best hackers. I had given him the details of my mothers phone earlier before Riker cornered me. I made it my mission to be ahead of him on this one.
"Hello."
"Miss Lyra?" Came out his smooth voice.
"Yea."
"Miss Lyra I traced that message and I found out where is came from."
"Where?" I asked a million plans already running through my head at what my next move would be and he hadn't even said yet.
"It came from the edge of the City. Somewhere in Blackwater street. That's as close as I could narrow it down to. I'm sorry I can't be of anymore help."
Looking at my phone in shock I couldn't believe he said Blackwater. That was where Zane's home was and where his gang gathered.
"That's fine Ben thank you very much for doing this and please don't tell anyone."
"Of course not Miss Lyra." And with that the line went dead.
Standing up from the table my homework was long forgotten about. Zane Knight had some explaining to do and he was going to tell me now.
