Lesson Forty-One - This Is Your Time.
Looking around Riker's car I took it all in. Leather seats and every high-tech button and gadget you could imagine. I also wasn't stupid I knew that there was guns in this car but I just couldn't see were. You didn't get in the car of a future Mafia leader and think that he wasn't armed in some way. It was clear the car was custom-made and I'm sure that was one of things that were sure to be put into it.
"You sure do like your cars."
I looked over to see that Riker was watching me carefully from the corner of his eye. The whole threatening match that we had going on not that long ago clearly forgotten about. It was good to know that he didn't hold on to things for long. He was always moving on to the next situation at hand the old ones long forgotten about. It was something that I respected about him.
"It's my peace away from the life I live. I'll never have a quiet life until the day I die. Working around cars is as close to that peace as I can get. They can't take back and they are far easier to work out than most people. Plus they can't lie. They either work or don't there is no in between."
Riker nodded his eyes fixed back on the road. "I get that. It's why I like hanging out at the club house. Yes I'm still surrounded by the life I was born into but it's as close to a break as I can get. Plus I know I can protect the people best from inside there."
I scoffed looking out the window. "It got shot at if you don't remember."
"Yea by your ex boyfriend." I could hear the harshness in his tone as he spoke. Him and Zane never had a good relationship. Before our two schools were put together they were always at each others throats. I can't remember how many times I heard Zane curse Riker's up and down. Now here I was friends with my ex boyfriends enemy and frankly I probably liked his company more than I ever did Zane's.
"Zane always did stupid shit. You could say I was his brain when we were going out. Don't you think it was weird that he caused more problems for you when we were together than when we were broken up."
A smirk crossed Riker's face as he seemed to think about it. He knew I was right when he thought about it. It wasn't a big secret anyway even the people that worked for him knew it. I was more born for that life than he ever was. That's probably way his parents were more upset when we broke up than the two of us were.
"No he didn't cause shit when you broke up because he wasn't even in the country to do anything. His dad kept his head down along with the rest of them."
"He left the country not because we broke up that was nothing but an act.He left because he knew the heat would be on his ass more and he wouldn't have my brain or my money to fix it. So he left until it all blew over."
Riker didn't look at all surprised. "Can't say I blame him. I wouldn't want to get on your bad side and I'm from one of the biggest Mafia's in the country."
There was a moment of silence between us before I felt a hand on my thigh. Looking down I seen Riker's tattoos on his arms and he didn't make any move to move his hand. It was weirdly comforting and that wasn't a feeling I was used to. For a moment I let all the worry about my mom and all the troubles come to my life just be forgotten about. I was safe around Riker as much as I hated to admit it and not the way you thought. I didn't need him to protect me in anyway. I didn't need anyone for that, what I needed was someone I could count on and not stab me in the back and I felt like Riker would never do that as much as we argued or didn't get on . Also I didn't have to be the smartest person in the room around him. I could rely on him to get things done as well and not run away when it got bad.
After a few minutes past I felt Riker left his hand from my thigh and I was quick to notice why. We were coming up to Zane's house. Riker drove on and parked his car about a five minute walk from the house. We didn't need to let them know that we were here. What ever Zane was up to I didn't want to let him know that we were here.
As I undid my seat belt I spoke up. "I don't think Zane is behind all this." I thought back to how his house was pretty much empty the last time I was there. How his members seemed to be doing other things leaving the house pretty much unguarded and how Zane didn't even seem to notice. Though I wasn't surprised by that last bit. Zane never was one to notice things without being told.
"Behind it or not it's happening at his house." Riker got out of the car first and then I followed. "You should know that house is there any weaknesses with getting past the guards?"
"Yea there is a secret entrance through the bunker under the house." I said as I started to lead the way. Sometimes it was both a blessing and a curse that I noticed everything.
"Do I want to know how you know that?" He asked rolling his eyes.
"Probably not."
Leading the way I walked around the back of the house. The problem with getting to the bunker though was that we would need to climb the fence and make a sprint across the open space between that fence and the house. We stood on the other side of the fence watching the guards for a few minutes learning their pattern and there path. We had one shot to do this and we both know we couldn't screw it up.
The fence was eight foot high but didn't look that hard to climb so that wasn't going to be a problem. We just needed to time it right. Something I was sure we could do. I think. The guards didn't stick to a routine and it was hard to judge what they were going to do next. It was going to be a bit harder than I first thought.
"How we going to do this?" I asked Riker as I turned to face him. I could see the concentration on his face as he watched every guard carefully. There was five of them walking around the area we needed to get through. Five guards that were really starting to get on my last nerve. I didn't have time for this shit my mother was in there. The thought of her sitting in there by herself surrounded by the enemy was more than I could handle. The woman knew how to get on my last nerve but she was family and nothing would change that. Even if I did find out she wasn't actually my mom.
Riker must have sensed my impatience because grabbed my arm when he noticed me move. I was going to be honest I didn't even know I was going to make a bolt for it but he seemed to.
"Wait, look." He said pointing over to one of the guards that was walking towards another. Soon enough all five of them were standing talking to each other at the edge of the house. I didn't know what they were talking about or what they were looking at on the screen on phone they seemed to be looking at but this was our chance.
"Quick."
Not needing much more encouragement I was up and over the fence before Riker had even finished saying the word. With the way I climbed that fence you would think I had a skill of breaking and entering. Who knew maybe I really did. I don't even know anymore on the side of the law I was on. Just as well I could pay the law off if I was on the wrong side. Did I ever feel guilty? Sometimes but not everyone was perfect.
Watching the guards the whole way I made a bolt for the house. Once they were out of view I went to the side of the house looking for the door that was hidden in the bushes.
"What are you doing?" Whispered Riker as he kept lookout around us.
"What the fuck does it look like I'm doing, I'm trying-" stopping mid sentence as my hand fell on the cold metal door handle. "Yes."
Pulling it open a dull light lit up the path and I quickly shoved Riker in through the door and closed it behind me. Taking out my phone I switched on the torch to light up the pathway even more. There wasn't anything special about it there was just the plain bricks walls and a small light every couple of feet to keep the path lit. Not that it was doing a good job. Nothing was clear.
"How do you know about this?"
Looking at Riker from the corner of my eye I could see him being amazed that something like this could be connected to a house that was as grand as Zane's. I had learnt though that every house had its secrets even my own. Plus they came in handy at times like this if you knew about them.
"I was Zane's girlfriend remember. I know a lot of things about stuff I shouldn't I also know that if my mother is really here where they would be keeping her. Which is why we went through this door. It would lead us right to her."
Grabbing Riker's wrist I started to pull him down the hallway making sure to keep my senses at high alert. All I could hear was our own footsteps and harsh breathing. It was cold down here but that wasn't a surprise at all we were basically under the house and it was autumn time.
It didn't take us long to reach the end of the hallway and I stopped dead in my tracks. There was a wooden door between us and the other side and that was the problem. I didn't know who or what was going to be on the other side. Normally the door lead to a small room were Zane used to hold people for questioning and torture. I knew there was a chance my mother was on the other side of this door but I also knew if she was there she wouldn't be the only one.
"What are you waiting for." Whispered Riker as he placed his hand on the door handle but I grabbed his wrist and stopped him from turning it.
"Wait, listen." Leaning closer to the door so that my ear was pressed up against it I could here voices. I couldn't make out what they were saying but I knew that what I had first thought was the truth. There was other people in there and that meant it was high chance of my mother.
Riker looked at me carefully as he pulled out a gun from behind him and handing it to me. He then pulled out another and took off the safety as I did the same.
It was weird to have a gun in my hands again the metal was as cool as the door handle to get into this place but a lot more dangerous. I could feel the adrenaline starting to run through my body and my addiction to danger was starting to come out.
Making sure I know all my surrounding I took one more listen with my ear pressed to the door. I tried to hear how many different voices there was after all the most dangerous person was the one that listens, thinks and observes.
"There's six of them."
Riker looked at me shocked that I had worked that out but quickly masked it was a serious look. I could see it in his eyes, admiration.
"You ready?"
