Lesson Forty-Three - Only Look Back To See How Far You've Come.
"Zane you better answer your fucking phone before I hunt you down and hang you by a rope!" I screamed down the speaker on my phone as I was once again sent to voicemail. I didn't care how crazy I sounded right now. I had passed crazy a long time ago, I was now turning insane. I have had it enough of Zane's shit.
"Why are you screaming at your ex boyfriend now?"
Snapping my head over to the door of the study room I watched as my twin brother Damon walked in. He looked a lot better with his good nights sleep and even though he wouldn't admit it, even he was worried about our mother when she was captured. After all you can't hate someone if they were dead.
"Nothing it doesn't matter." I said putting my phone away. He didn't need to know what had happened at Zane's house. When we brought our mom home we gave them all some messed up story about how we found her down near the river and that she had no memory of what happened. Who ever this Nisha Brooks woman was I didn't need Damon or any of my family for that matter butting in. The less they knew right now the better.
"How's mom?" I asked trying to change the subject.
My brother seemed thoughtful for a moment before speaking. I knew that my plan had worked me screaming bloody murder at Zane down the phone was long forgotten about.
"Fine." He said shrugging his shoulders like he didn't care but I knew he did. He could lie to the rest of the world all he wanted but I was his twin sister we always knew each others truths but I let it go. There was no need to bring something up that I knew would just anger him.
It made me think about what would happen if he knew the truth. What would he think or say if he knew Rachael wasn't really our mom. What if he knew that somewhere out there, there was a woman who left us to be raised by or father and woman who didn't even give birth to us. Our mom took us on and raised us like we were her own. Yes the woman was crazy and selfish at times but she also made us into who we are today. I don't know about you but I love who I am because of her and dad.
"Lyra?"
My attention snapped back to my brother who was looking at me with a frown. It was clear he was talking about something and I didn't hear a word about it. That wouldn't be the first time though. He didn't listen to half the things I said either.
"What?"
"Did you really find mom down by the river?" He knew I was lying, he could always tell when I was lying.
"Yea."
I could see the defeated look on his face and it broke my heart a bit to know I was lying to him and he knew it. I couldn't let him know the truth though. My brother was a wild card when it came to his emotions. Until I knew ever detail there was no need to bring him into this.
"Come on let's get to school. It Monday lets start another week of this shit." Grabbing my schoolbag I walked over to the door expecting my brother to follow. He didn't make a move though.
"I'll met you later. I'm going to met some friends." Pushing past me he made his way out the door before me not even bothering to say bye or even look me in the eyes. I just sighed and let him go. There was no need to go after him. He would get over it.
"What's wrong with him?" Asked Sky as she walked over to me and watching my brother go. Her light blue eyes watching my brother with concern. The two of them have been getting close lately. They were stupid if they thought I hadn't noticed.
"What's ever right with him. Come on let's go."
Sky looked up at me and grinned hooking her arm in with mine as we walked through my grand home. I knew Sky, she wanted something. Sky was a naturally sweet person but she was acting overly sweet right now as she made short conversations with me as we walked to my car. Frankly it amused me and made me forget completely about everything that had been going on.
"-that's why I can always count on you to help." She said closing the passenger car door.
"Ok Sky, what is it you want?" I grinned at my best friend wondering were she was going with all this nice talk. What ever it was she wanted I was sure it was less hassle than what my life had been lately. Plus I would do anything for her anyway.
"I need you to speak to Riker, Pleasseeeeeeee." She was giving me the puppy dog look but I just couldn't get over the fact she wants a favour from Riker. What could he do that I couldn't.
"About what?" I asked as I started my baby the engine roared to life under my hands.
"I want him to get his dad to stop the business deal his dad is doing with my parents." Her voice was soft as she spoke almost like she didn't know if she should speak about the matter at all.
"Why? What do you know Sky?"
Sky played with her hands as she looked out the car window. "My parents are going to throw them under the bus once they get what they want. They want to use the Kennedy name to promote their own but they have dirt on Riker's family. They will ruin them once they are done with them."
"How do you know this? Has your parents been trying to talk to you?"
She shook her head and I left out a breath of relief. I couldn't let them get in her head again. They had already done so much damage in her life and for the first time I could swear that Sky actually looked properly happy and not the fake smile she always had on her face. She had come along way and I was proud of her.
"Then how do you know this?" I asked curious.
"My brother told me. He said our parents are letting the power to go to their head. Their shares are growing by the second and with that more money. I never thought my parents would be so self-centred about money but I guess people change when they come face to face with it."
I scoffed, her parents were always selfish people to me but I wasn't about to complain about them in front of her. They were still her parents at the end of the day no matter how far they go. Family was family, the problem was you didn't get to pick them.
"Why don't you tell Riker yourself?"
"We both know he wouldn't fully believe me. Your close with him Lyra he trusts you and I'm telling the truth. My parents are up to something and I couldn't live with myself if I knew they did something that I could've warned them about. Please Lyra."
I sighed and nodded my head, I brushed my hair out of the way of my face as I looked around before joining the main road. "Ok, I'll talk to him. I can't promise he will listen though."
Sky's face lit up as I agreed to do as she wished. She was such a innocent person I could never understand how her parents could push her away like they had. I could never do something like that to my own children and I could never imagine my own dad doing that to me or my brothers. As much as we pissed off the man sometimes I knew he would always be there for us no matter what choice we made in life.
Parking my car in the car park I seen Riker leaning against his car only a few spaces over. I knew should talk to him now just to get it out of the way but the bell was going to ring soon. Then again since when did I care if I was late for class or not. As long as I got the grades I needed it didn't matter about the rest.
"I'll met you in class." Sky nodded her head knowing I was going to go over to Riker.
"Ok I'll see you later."
As I got closer to Riker his head snapped up to look in my direction. He was wearing infamous smirk as he watched me walk across the car park to him.
"How can I help you today princess? Anymore family members kidnapped? Or any brothers I need to get out of trouble?"
Rolling my eyes at his mocking tone I came to stop only a few feet in front of him. Crossing my arms I let him know I wasn't here to mess around.
"No I've just got some useful information for you. Information you might want to take to your dad before something happens."
Riker put his phone in his pocket and threw away the cigarette that he was smoking. I had his full attention straight away and we both knew it. The school bell rang telling us all to get to class but me and Riker didn't make a move to go anywhere.
"I'm listening."
"A little birdy told me that your dad might want to rethink his deal with the Wilson family. You're family isn't going to come out it well if your dad goes through with it."
Riker's grey eyes studied me for a moment trying to find any hint of lying. "You going to tell me who at least told you this?"
"Nope." I leaned back against the car behind me. "All you need to know is that I trust them and if you truth me then you should take the warning."
He seemed thoughtful for a moment before he nodded. "Ok I'll talk to my dad and call the deal off."
Something had caught my attention at the corner of my eyes as Riker spoke it was Zane's car that had just parked not that far away. I couldn't believe he would dare turn up here after everything.
"I'll be right back there is someone I need to talk to." With that I started to walk over to Zane's car completely blanking out Riker.
This boy had some serious explaining to do and I didn't care how I got the answers, he was going to tell me one way or another.
