Genesis
Words didnât have power, right? They were just words, strung together in sentences, big scary sentences that had me shaking. I wondered when or if the fear would ever leave.
I stared at the fruit on the table, not in the least bit hungry.
âI canât justâ¦â I found my voice and glanced up at Ethan. âI canât just sit around trapped in this house away from the world. It would be like prison.â
âA beautiful prison.â Ethan smiled.
I chose not to smile back. I didnât want to encourage him or encourage my body to lean any closer to his. His body was like a magnet, even if I fought against the pullâ I still couldnât help it.
I found myself inching my chair closer. When it scraped against the floor, everyone smirked but Ethan.
He seemed angry.
Angry, yet heâd been the one to do that to me.
âI donât care,â I said, ignoring the thumping of my heart in my chest and the fact that the closer I got to him the more it raced. âI canât just sit around here being worthless.â
âYou wonât,â Stephanie piped up. âYour life will be relatively normal. Ethan can even get you a job if you want⦠close by⦠so he can keep an eye on you, of course.â
âA job?â
âWork,â Ethan said slowly. âIsnât that what humans live for? A divine purpose? Though, if youâd rather stay here and cook and clean, you wonât get any complaints.â
âA job would be nice.â Anything to get me out of the house or compound.
âFantastic,â Ethan said, his teeth snapping together.
I had a sinking feeling it was anything but fantastic, but I wasnât about to bend over backward and let him make yet another decision for meâregardless of how much I wanted to launch myself at him and never let go.
It was the bond.
Nothing more.
And that really sucked if you asked me, because someone like Ethan⦠well, he was the type of man, person, being that you wanted to want you.
Not just because he had no choice, but because he couldnât imagine existing any other way.
Ashamed of my thoughtsâor maybe just embarrassedâI returned to my stare-down with the kitchen table.
âDrystan owns a book shop,â Stephanie suggested. âWhen Genesis isnât with us fighting crime, she can go there. God knows sheâll need to get away from Ethan in order to have some breathing room.â
Ethan rolled his eyes.
âDrystan?â I repeated. âHeâs immortal too?â
âAncient.â Mason nodded. âAnother werewolf obsessed with books. It should be a good arrangement.â
âArrangement,â I tested the word. âAnd when Iâm not at the bookshop?â
The others fell silent while Ethan reached across the table and grabbed my hand. My skin buzzed to life at his touch.
âI teach you everything you need to know about us⦠about your job, about the humansâ place with us⦠and I take you to your first Gathering.â
âLike a party?â I gripped his hand tighter, pulling strength from him that I didnât know I needed but lusted for, nonetheless.
âYes.â He shrugged. âIn fact, if youâre up to it, we can introduce you this evening.â
âOh.â Waves of pleasure washed over me as he released my hand; his fingertips dancing along the pulse in my wrist. âI think I can probably manage that.â
âThe others will love to meet you,â Stephanie encouraged, placing her hands on my shoulders.
âHow many others are we talking here?â I squinted. âIn my studies it said that the oldest leaders⦠you guysâ¦â
Alex choked on his laugh.
ââ¦only number in the hundreds.â
The laughter died, amusement gone from Alexâs eyes.
âFour of us,â Ethan answered. âThere are four Elders left, and Cassius makes five. The rest are relatively younger, but they number in the thousands.â
âFor just Seattle?â I squeaked out.
âOf course.â Ethan rolled his eyes and released my hand. The temperature in the room dipped. My hand itched to reach back and grasp his. âImmortals are able to live in society, you know.
âMost of us either have a job in the real world or have had in the past until it began to bore us.â
âWeird, I was always told you kept to yourselves.â
âWe arenât good at keeping to ourselves, just like we arenât good with sharing.â Alex grinned. âIsnât that right, Ethan?â
Ethan growled while Alex walked around the table and held out his hand. âHas anyone ever told you how beautiful you truly are? Itâs extraordinary⦠the color of your hair, the light of your eyes, theââ
Ethan kicked Alex in the back of the legs, sending him colliding into Stephanie.
His laughter was the only thing that made me think that Ethan wasnât going to kill him, since his eyes had gone completely black.
âNeed more blood?â Alex asked in a soothing tone. âDonât want you accidentally attacking your mate tonight in front of God and everyone.â
My gut clenched. âDo you, um, take my blood?â
âPlease.â Alex laughed. âLike Ethan would⦠heâs been celibate from blood for over a hundred years.â
âUntil now,â I whispered.
Ethan looked away, his eyes getting blacker, if that was even possible. âUntil I tasted you.â
A small part of me hoped I tasted good to him.
~Oh you do,~ came Alexâs voice in my head. ~Like pure sin.~
I felt my cheeks heat.
Ethanâs eyes narrowed. âStephanie, help Genesis get ready for this evening⦠keep her occupied while I go meet with Cassius.â
âWhat?â I yelled. âYouâre going to meet with him? After what happened? After going to all this trouble to protect me?â
âHear that?â Alex cupped his ear. âHer blood roars for you, Ethan.â
Ethan seemed to focus on my mouth as his fangs descended over his bottom lip. Holy crap, was he going to bite me again? My breathing slowed.
His eyes went from black to green then back to black again as he cupped the back of my head and brought me close, his teeth grazing my neck.
With a hiss, he pushed me away, almost hard enough for my chair to topple backward if Stephanie hadnât caught it with her hands.
âGo,â he said in a hoarse voice, âbefore I drain her.â
I didnât need to be told twice that it was dangerous just being next to him.
I bolted from my seat, ready to protect myself, if need be, when Mason moved to stand in front of me, bumping against Ethanâs chest. âNot necessary to scare her shitless, vampire.â
Ethan looked over Masonâs shoulder, his body calling to mine, singing, beckoning, even though he was dangerous, even though heâd just threatened me, I wanted to push Mason out of the way more than I wanted air.
âTake care of her,â Ethan barked. âI wonât be long.â
âStay alive,â Alex said in a cheerful voice. âAnd do tell Cassius hello.â
Stephanie put a protective arm around me and whispered in my ear. âIt will get better, you know. Heâs just angry and confused.â
âAnd Iâm not?â I wrapped my arms around myself. âThis morning I woke up, and the only thing on my mind was if I wanted eggs for breakfast or a protein shake.â
âAnd now,â Alex offered with a slight shrug, âyou get to worry about two immortals wanting your blood. No big, right?â
âIs that you trying to make me feel better?â
âNoâ¦â He smiled. âBut this is.â His blue eyes lit up just as Mason shoved him out of the way and Stephanie began tugging me back up the stairs.
âHeâs insane, but I love him.â She shook her head. âNow, letâs get you ready for this evening. I think Iâll put you in red. Wonât that drive Ethan absolutely wild?â
âIâm thinking Ethan needs no encouragement to end me,â I grumbled.
Stephanie pushed open the door to another room, one I hadnât seen before. âHe doesnât want to end you.
âHe wants to drink from youâso much, in fact, that Iâm pretty sure if he doesnât regain some focus, heâs going to punch Cassius in the face.â
âThat canât end well.â
âThey fight.â She shrugged. âQuite often.â
âIsnât Cassius your⦠king?â I was going to try to find a better word, but that was the only one that seemed to fit.
âSomewhat.â She looked down at the ground.
âOr at least at one point, he was supposed to lead usâbut itâs hard, for an imperfect being, pulled between two mortal planes, to do that without losing himself in the process.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âHeâs both human and immortal. He has two different types of chemical makeup fighting for dominance. Sometimes his human side wins. Other times, the angel side.
âItâs frustrating to follow someone who doesnât even know himself.â
âHmm.â I thought about that for a while; theyâd made me believe Cassius was like Satan himself, but now I was starting to wonder if he was just misunderstood.
âWhen you close your eyes,â she whispered under her breath, âheâll explain himself better.â
âWho?â
âCassius.â
âWhat? Did I miss an important part of this conversation?â
âYouâll see.â She smiled. âAnd then you can make your own judgment, yes?â
âUm, sure?â
âYes, this!â She moved to a large closet and opened the doors. âI think the dress is in here.â
I was still mulling over the fact that Cassius would somehow explain himself to me when a shoe flew by my head, missing my cheek by mere inches. I flinched.
âSorry! I forget youâre breakable.â
âVery.â I paid special attention to flying objects and went over to the closet. âWill Cassius be there tonight?â
âIf Ethan allows it.â
âAnd he wonât try to take me.â
âNot with us there, no.â
âBut heâll still try.â
Stephanieâs hand hovered over the other shoe. âEvery day. Until you no longer exist.â
