Genesis
My body was heavyâon fireâand the only way it felt better was when I was pressed against Ethan. I had no idea how long weâd slept. He woke me up three times in the middle of the night.
Each time, heâd drunk from me, never a lot, but enough to make it so my world stopped.
Each kiss was like a slow drug.
Each touch of his fingertips, each caress, went on for an eternity until I lost complete track of time.
I fell asleep with my face pressed against his solid chest and my legs wrapped halfway around his body.
âGenesis.â His smooth voice was hypnotic. âGenesis, wake up.â
âNo.â I pressed my face harder against his chest.
A warm chuckle erupted. âYes, we have work to do. Well, you have work to do, and then after your so-called work, weâre going to pay your mother a visit.â
I didnât open my eyes. âNo staying in bed all day?â
âAbout thatâ¦â Ethan sighed. âThe good news is it will feel like weâve been in bed for days when really it could have been mere hours.â
âHmm?â I perked up. âWell, thatâs a nice trick.â
âIâm full of them.â His eyes sparkled. âCare to know more?â
âYes,â I whispered, my mouth finding his.
With a groan, he pushed me back against the mattress and loomed over me, his naked body glorious-looking against the sunlight streaming through the window. âPerhaps weâll stay a bit longer.â
âYes.â I nodded my head eagerly. âIâm your mate, after all. Donât you want me to be pleased?â
âYou were pleased at least four times last night, possibly five, if we count the time Iââ
âShh.â I put my hands over his mouth.
He smirked. âAfraid the dust will hear?â
I rolled my eyes.
âEthan!â Alexâs voice boomed on the other side of the door. âFeed her!â
âIgnore him,â Ethan hissed.
The knock got louder. âFor the love of God, sheâs human. Give her food.â
âHeâs a siren. He knows nothing.â Ethan continued kissing me.
âMason will break down the door if he has to.â Fighting broke out in the hall. âEthan, I can smell the sex from here. One immortal to another, feed her before you can't feed from her anymore.â
Ethan growled and pulled back from me. âThey have no manners.â
I was half-tempted to cover my face with my hands. Had they heard us? Of course they'd heard us, and they knew, and they could⦠Yeah, I wanted to crawl under the bed and hide for a few days.
Instead, Ethan pounced from the bed, put on a pair of jeans, and jerked open the door while I tried to hide beneath the covers.
Alex peered over Ethan's shoulder and waved.
I had no choice but to wave back and hope that I wasn't as red as I felt.
âShe's alive.â Alex held up his hand for a high five. âNo? Not funny? Too soon?â
âHorrible joke,â Mason said next to him. âI made eggs. She's going to need food. Make her eat everything on the plate andââ
He was still talking when Ethan slammed the door in his face and brought a giant plate of food over to me.
âForgive them.â Ethan scowled. âThere aren't typically secrets between us, and they're just concerned for you.â
I pointed at the eggs, ten slices of bacon, and toast. âClearly, they donât want me to starve.â
âWolves.â Ethan looked heavenward. âHe should be more concerned with his own diet, the ass.â
âIt does smell good.â I moved up the bed so I could lean against the headboard. âDo you eat?â
Ethanâs lips curved into a predatory smile. âI ate several times last night. Care for me to refresh your memory?â
My cheeks burned.
âSo tempting.â He reached for a piece of bacon and held it to his lips, taking a small bite that had my entire body clenching to keep from reaching out and attacking him. âAnd yes, I can eat.
âI typically do eat but havenât been because when we drink, we donât need normal food.â
âBut before meâ¦â I grabbed a piece of toast. âYou were eating normal food.â
âI like you better.â He winked. âBut yes, I was.â
âGood to know Iâm better than bacon.â
âYour tasteâ¦â His eyes brightened. ââ¦is unlike anything Iâve ever had.â
âHmmâ¦â I licked my lips.
âStop it,â he hissed and looked away. âDamn, I canât watch you eat.â
âIâm going to shower while you eat your entire plate as per Masonâs orders, and then Iâll contemplate letting you leave this room so you can go to the bookstore.â
âAh!â I almost knocked over the food. âMy job! Am I late? Will I get fired?â
Ethan burst out laughing. âItâs eight in the morning. Heâs expecting you when I drop you off. No sooner, no later. You wonât get fired. He wouldnât dream of it, and you really are adorable.â
âAnd hot.â I sighed.
âThat too.â
âNo, I mean hot, as in, itâs scorching in here.â
Ethan winced. âYou may be that way for a few days.â
âHot?â
He nodded.
âWhy?â
âToo much vampire blood makes you overheat a bit.â He shrugged.
âIt wonât turn youâ Youâre very much human, like Iâve said before, but sometimes the vampire blood causes a type of burn to take over in your bloodstream, not painful, just not exactly pleasant if itâs a hundred degrees outside.â
âGood thing itâs Seattle.â I bit into the toast.
âYes, well, I imagine at this point, raindrops would simply turn to vapor if they landed on your skin.â
I smiled.
âShower.â He nodded. âIâm going to turn around now and walk away.â
âNarrating?â
âApparently, thatâs what I do when I can think of nothing more than ripping that sheet from your body, slamming you into the nearest wall, and possessing you all over again.â
I dropped the toast.
He growled, taking two steps toward me, then swore and turned back around.
âHave a good shower!â I called.
Another growl was his answer, and then his jeans went flying. I wasnât laughing anymore.
The ride to the bookstore was torturous. Ethan pulled over a half-dozen times just to kiss me. It was noon by the time we actually made it there, and even then, I almost refused to get out of the car.
âFour hours,â Ethan repeated for the tenth time. âDo your work, contribute to society, enjoy yourself, and after⦠we'll make a visit to your mother.â
My stomach dropped to my knees.
He gripped my chin between his fingers and kissed my mouth softly. âWe need to know the truth, Genesis.â
âWhy?â My voice trembled.
âBecause it may have something to do with the prophecy, or it could just be a rare coincidence. I swear, I won't let her hurt you.â
I sighed, already drawing into myself.
âMy offer still stands,â Ethan whispered.
âWhat?â My head snapped up. âWhat offer?â
âI'll kill her,â he said softly. âAll you need to do is ask it â and it's done.
âShe doesn't deserve life for the way she treated you, and it would make me happy to see you hold your head high around her.â
âBut sheâd be dead.â
âPerhaps Iâll just toy with her a bit.â
I giggled.
âGo.â He kissed me again. âAnd if Cassius shows upââ Ethan swore. âWhich he may, considering heâs insane and has a death wish⦠try to ignore him.â
âDone,â I answered. âBesides, I could touch him all I wantedâ¦â
Ethan growled.
ââ¦and still crave you.â
His face softened. âI wish that was true.â
âIt is.â
His face was sad. âIâll see you in a while.â
