Genesis
~Cassius.~ The name burned on my lips though I hadnât spoken it out loudâwas too afraid to. I knew the power behind his name, behind who he was.
He was like a god to the immortals.
And to me?
Well, he was more than that. He could kill me with a simple snap of his fingers. He could make me see my worst nightmares by simply willing it to happen. But worst of all? He could own me.
It was said that Dark Ones treated humans as pets, playthingsâan amusement.
But because Dark Ones had such heightened emotions, when they abandoned a human out of boredom or something else trivial, it killed the human.
Instantly shattering their hearts in their chests.
Once the Dark Ones were finished with youâyou didnât survive it. No one could survive the emotional break that came when someone like Cassius left.
It was emptiness.
It was death.
I needed to stay far, far away from him if I wanted to live.
The only happy thought that occurred to me was that someone as old as Cassius most likely despised humans enough not to toy with them. Unlike the vampire and siren, who found it amusing and harmless.
âDo you know your duties?â Cassius barked. âOr am I to go over them with you? From the looks of Alex, it seems heâs been too preoccupied to do much of anything except fill the air with his arousal.â
Alexâs nostrils flared, but he said nothing.
âAnd, Stephanie, whatâs your excuse?â
She dropped her head and gave a little shudder. âSorry, Cassius.â
âMason?â He turned to the werewolf. âYour looks donât betray you, but your rapid heartbeat does. Tell me, does she set your blood on fire?â
The werewolf rolled his eyes. âOnly in irritation, my lord.â
âEthanâ¦â Cassius barked. âYouâve been quiet.â
âIâve been watching.â Ethan tilted his head, making himself look more vampire than before. The way his eyes glowed in my direction sent shivers all the way down my spine. âI think Iâll keep her.â
Stephanie jumped up from her seat. âEthanâ!â
âPlease.â Ethan waved her off. âHe owes me, donât you, Cassius?â
The temperature in the room dropped at least thirty degrees while Cassius stood and, with little effort, threw Ethan across the room. He slammed into one of the rock walls.
Pieces of dust flew into the air. I gasped, covering my mouth with my hands.
âDramatic,â Ethan huffed beneath an array of rubble and rock. âThen again, youâve always been dramatic, havenât you, Dark One?â
Cassius released Ethan and turned to face me. âYou will go with Ethan. You will do your⦠duty.â The way he said it made me feel dirty, like I was being whored out.
âI donât need to explain the rules, but I will, for your sake, explain them once. Youâre hired to do a specific job for us. Youâre hired to do a specific job for us.
âYou are not here to try to land yourself an immortal husband, so leave those hopes and dreams at the door.
âPhysical contact between you and an immortal is forbidden, and if you are on the receiving end of it, outside of your duties, you will be the one punished, not the immortal.â
Yeah, that was what I was afraid of.
âThey may touch you, may do whatever the hell they want with you. But if you seek them out, touch them without proper invitationâ¦â His voice trailed off, his nostrils flared. âDo you understand?â
Not at all. But I had no choice. I gave a quick nod, wringing my hands together. âYes.â
âEthan,â Cassius turned, âconsider my debt paid.â
Ethanâs smile grew to gigantic proportions. âOh, itâs been paid,â he licked his lips, âin full.â
I knew that look.
I was going to die.
Because there was no way that vampire wasnât putting his hands or his fangs on meâ and it would be my fault because I was the human.
To them, we werenât victims. Just nuisances they put up with.
âWell thenâ¦â Ethan held out his hand in my direction. âShall we?â
Fear kept me rooted to my spot.
Then suddenly warmth spread throughout the room. I quickly glanced to the siren; Alex had his hand raised in the air, and I could almost see the heat radiating from his hand toward my body.
~Be calm,~ he whispered in my head. ~Ethan will not harm you.~
~And you?~
~None of us mean you harm.~
My gaze flickered to Cassius.
Alex gave a slight shake of his head. Alex gave a slight shake of his head. ~Yes, human. He means you harm. You are never to be alone with him. Ever. If you are, I cannot help you. I cannot shield you from his power.~
~If he touches you, if he claims you, it will be the last time you own your own body, soul, and mind. He will destroy you. If you must⦠run.~
My hands shook at my sides, but I managed a nod in his direction.
Ethan held out his hand again. âCome.â
I followed him, careful not to touch his hand lest he have the same effect on me a Dark One would, and followed him through a side door.
He moved silently next to me, opening door after door, finally leading me into a dark parking garage where a black unmarked town car was waiting.
âHurry, get in.â
âWhat?â
He shoved me in the car and ran to the other side, faster than my eyes could follow, then sped off as if we were being chased.
âWe donât have much time.â He looked behind him. âDamn it, we have less than that much time.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âHe will ~hunt~ you.â
âWhat?â I gasped. âWho?â
âCassiusâ¦â He spat. âHe wants you. I could feel it. Could see it in his mindâs eye as if I was living it myself. The reason youâre here isnât for the immortals. Itâs for him.â
âBut, my mom said thatââ
Ethan barked out a laugh. âYes please tell me what your human mother told you about what your job is to the immortals?â
I swallowed the dryness in my throat. âIâm to educate you about the ways of the humans so you donât have to interact with us.
âTeach any of the immortal children how to use the Internet, cell phonesâtechnologyâand at the end of the day, Iââ
He roared with laughter, interrupting what I thought was a pretty good speech.
âSo thatâs what they tell you now?â
âWh-what?â I looked behind me only because he kept looking behind us. For Cassius to fly overhead? Or what? We were in the middle of Seattle. Itâs not like the immortal would want to be seen.
âImmortals cannot have children with one another, Genesis.â
âWhat?â I gasped. âBut thatâs impossible. That would meanââ
Ethanâs eyes flashed. âDo you really think that with all the money we have, all the resources, we would need a tiny pitiful ugly little human to tell us how to use a damn computer?â
Well, when he put it that wayâ¦
It didnât make sense. I mean, Iâd studied their history, studied everything about each race. Iâd studied my butt off so I could be useful for them, to them.
And when all of that was finished, Iâd even had to take classes on proper etiquetteâhow to serve at an immortal feast, how to dress when I was presented, how toâ
âOh, my gosh,â I gasped, reaching for the seatbelt.
Ethanâs hands went to mine. âStop. It will pass. Youâre just scared.â
âButââ
âShhh.â Something shifted in the car, maybe it was the temperature, maybe it was just Ethan trying to calm me down, but my heartbeat slowed way down.
âDid you justâ¦â My words felt funny. ââ¦slow down my heart?â
âIâm a vampire, love. What did you expect me to do? Bite you into silence?â
Yeah, thatâs exactly what I expected; itâs what the books had said.
âDonât believe everything you read. Besides, Iâm not the least bit hungry.â He winked and took the next exit toward Lake Washington.
âSoâ¦â He drove the car like a maniac. Turns werenât just turns. It was like he was jerking the car so hard the steering wheel was about to come off. âTell me you believe me.â
âBelieve you?â
âAbout your purpose?â
âWhat is my purpose?â I asked. âI mean, sir, or⦠umâ¦â Crap, Iâd drawn a blank on how I was supposed to address him. He was above me; I needed to show him respect.
âEthan.â He sighed heavily. âDamn, do they brainwash you that much these days?â
âThese days?â
âWe havenât called a number up in fifty years.â Ethan shook his head. âPity that Cassius would do it now. Then again, after looking at youâ¦â He licked his lips. ââ¦Iâd probably do the same damn thing.â
âWhat?â
âHome!â Ethan screeched the car to a halt in front of a gigantic, fenced-in mansion overlooking the lake. A few men stood outside the gates.
When they magically swung open, Ethan sped inside then turned off the car. âCome on.â
With no other option but to follow, I quickly got out of the car and followed him to the door.
Two men with the same-colored eyes but darker hair glanced from me to Ethan and back again.
The first spoke. âApologies, my lord, but she⦠you cannot bring a breeder into the house! Not if you want to live through the night.â He leaned forward and sniffed. âSheâs marked!â
âStay out of it, Ben.â Ethan gripped my hand and jerked me into the house.
âBreeder?â I repeated. âWhat did he mean by that?â
âSilence, human.â Ethan continued pulling me through the house until finally stopping in a gourmet kitchen. âI donât know what to do with you yet. I donât know what to do with you yet.
âI donât suppose youâll take kindly to the doghouse out back or the nice water bowl with the name Scratch on it?â
My mouth dropped open. âA dog? Youâre going to treat me like your dog?â
âJoke.â He smirked. âBut good to know youâre opposed to sleeping outside.â
My knees threatened to give out. He must have noticed; in an instant I was in his arms being carried to the nearest chair.
âHumans,â he whispered into my hair. âSo fragile.â
It didnât register I was in a vampireâs arms. In fact, nothing was registering. Nothing was making sense, and I wasnât sure if I was even allowed to ask questions. It wasnât my place.
My mom had made that clear.
I was terrified of doing the wrong thingâ and suffering for it.
The room felt warm again. Warm and familiar. I looked up just as Stephanie and Alex rushed in the room.
âYour scent is all over the thing.â Alex shook his head. âItâs not enough.â
Ethan hissed. âIâve had her for fifteen minutes. He freaking marked her. What do you expect me to do?â
âTry harder,â Alex clipped then turned his cold blue eyes toward me. âSorry, little one, but this dayâs going to get a hell of a lot worse before it gets better.â
âIâll do it,â a third gruff voice said.
âMasonâ¦â Ethan nodded ââ¦do your worst.â
Mason grunted then held out his hand to me.
I didnât take it.
âHell, Ethan, what did you do to her?â Mason rolled his eyes. âSheâs petrified.â
âSheâs human,â Stephanie pointed out.
âS-sorry.â I shook my head. âIâm sorry that Iâm scared.â
They all stopped glaring at one another and instead turned their full focus on me.
âFear attracts immortals,â Mason said plainly. âIt would be good of you to stop shaking.â
âSlow her heart.â Stephanie slapped Ethan in the chest. âHurry.â
Rolling his eyes, Ethan focused in on me, and slowly my racing heart went back to normal.
âMason,â Alex barked, âhurry.â
âRight.â Mason took a step forward. âWe won't hurt you⦠but it will hurt.â
âWhat?â
âJustâ¦â Ethan cursed and looked away. ââ¦stay as still as possible, human.â
âShe has a name,â Alex grumbled, earning a fiery look from both Ethan and Mason.
My breath hitched when Mason leaned down, gripping my shoulders, and softly nibbled on my neck. It felt goodâuntil a slicing pain followed the nibbling.
I shrieked.
He didnât let go.
When I was about ready to pass out, he pulled back, his eyes completely black. âIt didnât work.â
âShit.â Ethan ran his hands through his hair.
âYou have to do something.â Stephanie looked toward Ethan. âHeâll find her if you donât.â
âWhat the hell do you expect me to do?â Ethan roared. âBite her?â
The room fell silent. Didnât vampires bite?
Isnât that what the text had said?
Alex exhaled loudly. âIâll try, just donât get all pissed off when she melts into a puddle on the floor.â
âOh please.â Stephanie rolled her eyes.
âFocus.â Alex snapped his fingers in front of my face. âLet me try to at least smother his scent with mine.â
His lips descended.
And I was being kissedâby a siren. Something the texts described as indescribable ecstasy.
I was too afraid to feel anything except for heat and desire.
My heartbeat picked up again. My body went damp and hot as his mouth moved against mine.
When he pulled back, it wasnât with a satisfied smirk but one of hopelessness. âIâm so sorry, little human.â
âHeâll come for her,â Stephanie whispered, her eyes flickering to Ethan. âIf he takes herââ
âI know,â Ethan barked. âDonât you think Iâm well aware of our own prophecy?â
âYet we play right into it⦠every century,â Alex muttered. âI thought⦠for a second, I thought this one would be different. It felt different, right?â
The room fell silent again.
âWhatâ¦â My voice was hoarse. ââ¦what am I really doing with you? Why was my number called?â
âOh dearâ¦â Stephanie plopped down into a seat. âEthan didnât explain that?â
âAgain, fifteen minutes,â Ethan muttered under his breath. âAnd sheâs human. Itâs not like her capacity for learning new information has evolved.â
I glared at him.
Mason chuckled.
âHoneyâ¦â Stephanie reached her hand across the table and placed it on mine. âWhatever your family has taught you is a lie. You arenât here to teach us or do anything of the sort.
âYouâre⦠youâre a breeder.â
âA breeder,â I repeated. âLike a horse?â
Mason laughed harder. Well, at least I knew werewolves werenât out to kill me.
Ethan swore and sat down on the other side of me.
âWe call numbers every fifty years to breed. Immortals cannot procreate with other immortals,â he explained. âHumans are chosen based on their scent, strengthâ¦â He coughed and looked away.
âPhysical appeal.â
âBut Iâm ugly,â I blurted. âTo you Iâm ugly. Weâre ugly, weâre nothing, weâreââ
Ethan shook his head slowly. âAnd thatâs the greatest deception of all.â His hands moved to my chin. âTo us youâre not ugly. You are absolute perfection.â
âTo a Dark One,â Mason continued, âyouâre life itself.â
