Genesis
~âItâs snowing.â I held my hand out and caught a few snowflakes. âNo lake today?â~
~Cassius shrugged. His mood was different, darker. âI wanted the comfort cold brings me.â~
~âNormally itâs heat.â~
~âIâm the opposite of warmth.â His eyes turned white. âTherefore, itâs cold that comforts. Itâs my fire.â~
~I pulled the fur blanket around me. We were sitting outside a cabin in front of a roaring fire. It was beautiful; snow-blanketed the forest, making it seem enchanted.~
~âMore questionsâ¦â Cassius sighed. âI sense them.â~
~I stared into the fire. âWhat was Ethanâs daughter?â~
~âDifferent question,â Cassius snapped.~
~âCan you mate?â~
~Cassius let out a slew of curses. âOur punishment or maybe our prize? Women die at our hands. Human women.â He shrugged. âVampire blood and human blood co-exist.~
~âAngel blood and human blood are an abomination.â~
~My throat went completely dry. âSo it canât mix.â~
~âIt can⦠for a time, and then the angel blood overwhelms what weakness the human has. It makes them evil, destroys them from the inside out.â~
~âSo you canât mate.â~
~âWe donât mate,â Cassius snapped, âbecause there is no point, Genesis.â~
~âThatâs lonely.â~
~His eyes closed. âYou have no idea.â~
~âWhat about other immortals. Can you mate with them?â~
~âWhy risk more lives?â Cassius threw a piece of wood into the fire. His eyes still hadnât returned to a normal colorâ they were void of color, void of emotion. âIs that it for this evening?â~
~âOne moreâ¦â I held my hands out to the fire.~
~He nodded.~
~âIs there a way to test the prophecy? To make sure it works?â~
~âThere is always a way,â Cassius sneered, âbut I highly doubt it is a road you want to travelâ or one your mate would let you even step foot on.â~
~âSo I wait to live or die?â~
~âYou pass all tests, you liveâ and hopefully restore balance. The prophecy says a human will mate with an immortal. It will be the new beginning, and theyâll have a child.â~
~I shuddered. âI donât want to die.â~
~Cassiusâs eyes met mine. âThen donât.â~
~âWhaââ He disappeared in front of my very eyes.~
And then I jolted awake, shivering in Ethanâs arms.
âWhat did he do? Meet you in a freezer?â Ethan swore, gathering me against him, wrapping blankets tightly around my body.
âS-sorry.â I shivered. âI didnât realize how cold I was.â
âHe thrives on the cold.â Ethan rubbed my shoulders. âAnd clearly forgets himself if he put you in the middle of a blizzard.â
âIt was a snowstorm⦠I think⦠but pretty.â
âOh well, as long as it was pretty,â Ethan hissed.
I tucked my head against his chest, focusing on his warmth. âWe need to have a child.â
Ethanâs hands stopped moving. âCassius told you that?â
âItâs part of the prophecy, right?â
âYes, butââ
âSo that will make it come true, right?â
âNo,â he said, sadness evident in his tone. âI wish that were true, but no, Genesis, we wonât know untilâ¦â
âI no longer exist.â I trembled. âHe said thereâs another wayââ
âNo!â Ethan yelled. He gulped in a breath, released it, then said more softly, âNo, it isnât an option.â
âMaybe if you told me.â
âItâs forbidden.â
I pretended to be satisfied with thatâ but I wasnât. If there was a way to fix the balance of things, I was going to find it.
Not just for me, but for Ethanâ for Mason, whoâd lost the love of his lifeâ for Cassius, who seemed lonelier than Death.
If I could save themâ
I had to try.
