Ethan
âThe last time you called for me was over a hundred years ago,â Cassius said from behind my spot in the kitchen. Iâd been pacing for the past ten minutes, waiting for him to arrive.
Stephanie and Alex tried to get me to feed.
I didnât want blood from a bag.
If I couldnât have her â if I didnât have her â I wanted nothing. Death. I would welcome death.
âSheâs gone.â I didnât recognize my own voice. It was hoarse, like Iâd been choked and barely survived. âAn archangelââ
Cassius moved by me and held up his hand, his eyes blazing white for a few seconds before he uttered a curse. âSariel.â
Mason whistled and fell down into a chair, hanging his head in his hands. âWe should have kept better watch of her. We should haveââ
âMasonâ¦â I shook my head. âIt wasnât your fault.â I turned my attention to Stephanie. âCare to explain how you earned the angelâs mark?â
Cassiusâs head craned to the side, his eyes so white they almost glowed.
He stalked toward Stephanie then with one hand pushed her up against the wall, pulling her head to the side to glance at the mark. âDecided to whore yourself out?â
Stephanieâs face paled. âI hadââ
âDo not lie,â Cassius dropped her to the ground. She crumpled against the floor, holding her head in her hands. âHe didnât say he was going to hurt her.â
I lunged for her.
Mason intercepted me.
âHe said she needed to be tested. You all knew there was another way.â Slowly, Stephanie inched to her feet. âIf an archangel deems the human pure, heâll restore balance, regardless of the prophecy!â
âAnd that worked out so well last time,â Cassius hissed.
Lost, I simply waited for someone to explain. When nothing happened, I pretended to lose my irritation. Masonâs arms slackened. I lunged for Stephanieâs throat, my fangs hovering over her artery.
âWhat. Exactly. Did he promise you?â
Her heartbeat picked up.
âWorth dying for, siren?â
âLove always is,â she whispered.
It wasnât a lie.
I stepped back. Tears filled her blue eyes. âHe promised me, Cassius.â
Cassius went completely still next to me. The room temperature plummeted, causing a frost to cover the granite countertops. âSo, you thought to enslave me?â
âNo!â Stephanie sobbed. âYou said we could never be together⦠immortals do not mate. I simplyââ
Cassius held up his hand. It shook in the air, and pieces of frost fell from his fingertips.
âYou would betray a defenseless humanâ one for whom we have been waiting for over a hundred yearsâbecause you think yourself in love with me?â
The room began to freeze; pieces of ice formed along Cassiusâs face, shattering into the air the minute he opened his mouth to speak. âDark Ones do not love.â
A tear slid down Stephanieâs cheek, freezing against her porcelain skin. âBut weâve spent nearly every night together.â
âAnd every morning I spend with someone else,â Cassius said in a flat voice.
âI didnât think you were becoming so attached as to sell your soul to an archangel in order to align your destiny with mine.â
âButâ
âEnough,â Alex barked. âStephanie, stop⦠youâre making it worse.â
Cassius hung his head. âYou can track her blood?â
âYes,â I hissed. âBut going up against Sarielâ¦â
âHeâs old,â Cassius stated in a bland voice. âOlder than me.â
âNot hard,â Mason grumbled.
Cassius snapped his teeth together. âThe only way to rescue her, to pull her away from the archangelâs scent, would beâ¦â He looked up, his eyes flashing once again. ââ¦to mix the blood.â
âYes.â My voice shook. âShe needs angel blood.â
âShe wonât take it.â Cassius shook his head. âBelieve me.â
âShe has no choice!â I yelled, pain searing my limbs, making them feel heavy. âShe either drinks from you and makes the choice to leave, or heâll keep her forever. You know he will.â
âHe does like his toys.â Cassius swore. âUnless he truly believes sheâs the human weâve been waiting for, and then things are about to get a lot worse.â
Alex pushed Stephanie into a chair and crossed his arms. âHow can it get worse?â
âDeath,â I whispered. âWe can distract him long enough to grab her, shield her from his scent. But if he truly believes what we doâthen blood will be spilled.â
âFor balance to be restored,â Cassius sighed. âBlood always needs to be spilled.â
âDoes it matter who?â Alex asked. âBecause I vote Stephanie.â
Her soft sobs were grating on my nerves. I should have watched her closerâshould have seen the signs of her infatuation. Dark Ones did not mate for a reason.
They were too addicted to those who fell for them, destroying the other half that should help make a whole.
âTrack her,â Cassius finally said. âWe'll go when he's at his weakest.â
Night.
Sariel taught the stars how to shine. At night his resources were depleted on account that his power was shared with the sky.
âAlexâ¦â I nodded toward the siren. âKeep her locked up until we return. And Mason?â
He stood. âLet me go with you.â
âYouâre not strong enough.â I hated saying it, almost as much as I hated that I was right.
Mason let out a growl.
âWolfâ¦â Cassius put his hand on Masonâs shoulder. âYour diet makes you weak. Therefore, it makes us vulnerable. You stay.â
I knew it hurt Masonâs pride.
His eyes went completely black as he slowly sank into the chair, his face completely tight with outrage. Berries and cones didnât make a werewolf strongâ he knew that as much as we did.
âTen miles away.â I sniffed the air for traces of the woman I lovedâ the woman who was taken from me. Anger overtook all good reason as I started moving toward the door.
âLevel head, Ethan.â Cassiusâs cold grip stopped my blood from boiling over. âSheâll need you at your strongest.â
âI know.â
âDrink.â
I had to have heard him wrong.
âDrink.â His teeth snapped. âBefore I change my mind.â He lifted his hand to my lips.
With a sneer, I pushed him away.
He slammed me against the wall. âYou want to save your love? Stop being so damn prideful and drink.â
With a hiss, I bit into his arm and sucked deep. His blood was like ice, cooling my veins, making my body so calm I was finally able to think clearly.
I took a step back, the blue tint of his blood dripping from my fangs. âI wonât thank you.â
âAnd I wonât expect it.â He moved his fingers along the small indents. The skin slowly closed back together.
âIf she touches youââ I whispered.
âWhen she touches me,â he clarified, âyou will finally see it.â
âThat you were right all along?â I growled.
âThat you should have trusted her to begin with.â
