Genesis
Iâd never bled so much in my entire life. Just when I was about to pass out, Aziel appeared by my side and told me to drink. Whatever he brought me tasted funny.
I tried to jerk away from him, but I was too weak from blood loss.
I heard Ethanâs voice. My heart soared. He was there.
And then Sariel turned and offered a sad smile, almost as if he was apologizing for having made over a hundred different small cuts around my arms and neck.
It had happened so fast the pain didnât even register for the first minute, and then everything stung like a hundred fire ants had all bitten me at the same time.
âGenesisâ¦â
Ethan had eyes for me and only me. I wanted to yell for him to stop because something wasnât right. Something felt very wrong.
Cassius moved away from Ethan toward me, maybe to help, maybe to finish the job. When I saw Ethan stumble forwardâ¦
I knew.
Things were about to get a lot worse.
Cassius swore, pulling a feather from Ethanâs back.
âNow we begin,â Sariel said in a calm voice, picking up his pace as he stalked towards Cassius.
Confused, I watched as Ethan fell to his knees and reached for me, his face ashen, his eyes black.
âWhat did you do to him?â I yelled.
âSimply making him⦠a bit more human,â Sariel shrugged, stopping directly in front of Cassius.
Cassius clenched his fists, his stance predatory. âItâs been a while⦠Sariel.â
âFather,â Sariel shrugged, âAnd apparently Iâve been a horrible one⦠neglecting my children. Then again, you know all about being a father, donât you⦠son?â
In a flash, Cassius had his hands around the angelâs neck. He threw him against the wall.
Sariel simply shook his body, his wings elongating to at least seven feet across. âI see Iâve touched a nerve.â
âEthan,â Cassius growled. âGet her out of here.â
Ethan shook his head then slowly stood and stumbled toward me. When his hand touched mine, it was slapped away by chains.
Aziel laughed. âNo, no. The vampire watches. This concerns him, after all.â
âBe silent,â Sariel sneered, waving his hand at Aziel.
âDid you think you could bring the balance all on your own?â Sariel laughed mockingly, making my ears ring with its loudness.
âDid you think that you were strong enough to shield all the immortals and humans alike from your sin?â
Ethan reached for my hand again, tugging me close to him.
My head slumped forward on his chest.
I didnât know if it was my blood getting all over him or his getting all over me. But I felt safeâfinally.
Until Aziel lunged for me.
Ethan kicked him in the chest, causing a snarl to erupt between Azielâs lips. âIf I were whole, Iâd rip you limb from limbâthen again, Iâve already taken everything from you.
âDo you knowâ¦â He stood to his full height, which I hadnât noticed until now, matched Sarielâs. âShe gave me her bodyâher very soulâbefore you killed her.â
Ethan shook in my arms, his fangs grazing my neck.
âAnd when I took her over and over again,â Aziel laughed, âI promised her Iâd make her immortal. If she did one tiny, little thing for me.â
âEthan, donât listen to him.â I gripped the sides of his face. âFocus on me.â
âBirth me a son,â Aziel yelled. âAnd you know what that bitch did?â
Sariel had Cassius by the throat. With a growl, he punched Sariel in the chest, sending the angel soaring through the air again. âNo!â
He was running toward us.
My mind wasnât putting the pieces together fast enough.
Aziel leaned down and whispered in Ethanâs ear. âShe gave me a daughter.â
Cassius fell to his knees.
Sariel walked around him, pulling a long sharp feather from his wings. âOne should never have to kill his own offspring.â
âCassius! Behind you!â I yelled.
Cassius hung his head like he wanted to die.
In a flash, Ethanâs fangs were in Azielâs neck. He hunched over him, blue blood dripping from his fangs as he completely drained the angel.
When he stood, his eyes were white just like Cassiusâs. In two strides, he had Cassius by the neck and tossed him against the wall.
A crack ran from the bottom to the top of the ceiling as plaster fell from overhead.
âThis is my favorite part,â Sariel sang, removing himself from the fight between Cassius and Ethan and coming to my side. âWhere they are finally forced to finish what they started so long ago.â
In my weakened state, I saw two of Sariel. I shook my head. âHe canât die.â
âWhich one?â Sariel asked.
âBoth.â I forced the word out. âTheyâll kill each other.â
âAh, but balance must be restored.â
âI donât understand,â I whispered. âEthan, stop!â
Cassius wasnât fighting anymore. It was like he wanted to die.
âPlease!â I reached for Sariel, my fingers coming into contact with his soft velvet feathers. âPlease.â
âYou knowâ¦â His eyes closed briefly. âThatâs the first time a human has dared touch me in⦠years.â
âSorry.â
âIt was warm.â He sighed. âIâve been cold for a very long time.â
The air in the room shifted, turning to ice.
Ethan growled, his fangs nearly dipping into Cassiusâs neck when Cassius finally punched him in the jaw and stumbled backward. âI couldnât do it!â
âA daughter!â
âShe wasnât yours!â
âYou still killed her!â
Cassius fell to his knees. âNo. No, I couldnât.â
The room stilled as if someone had pressed pause on the TV.
âAnd so the truth reveals itself.â Sariel put his arm around my shoulders. I was too weak to do anything but lean against his cold body.
âA daughter,â Ethan hissed. âYou would kill an innocent human.â
âAbomination,â Sariel said in a deadly tone. âAnother Dark One. No Dark Ones have been born since Cassiusâsince my sin.â
Cassius flinched.
I wanted to hug him.
His own father thought him an abomination.
âNo more Dark Ones must live.â Sariel sighed. âAnd now that Aziel is dead, I am almost appeased. You see, balance was shattered the minute Cassius allowed the Dark One to breathe.â
âI couldnât.â Cassius shook his head back and forth. âShe was innocent.â
âSo one of you will take her place.â Sariel nodded. âOne of you will take her place, and balance will be restored. Itâs as simple as that.â He turned his head to me. âChoose, human.â
âWh-what?â
âYour destiny. You must choose.â
âI donât understand.â
âWho lives? Who dies?â
