Genesis
My breath hitched in my chest as I stared at the strangers around me. What did that even mean? Life itself? I was nothing.
Why would I be taught humility and self-hate my whole life only to be told by the very ones I was supposed to fear that I was life itself?
âJealousy,â Ethan said softly, âquickly turns to envy. Envy is a dangerous thing because you end up wanting so desperately what you'd never been given in the first place.
âThe greatest sin an immortal can commit is to laugh in the face of what we are⦠and want.â His eyes were sad. âHe wants you.â
âTo kill me?â I whispered hoarsely.
âNo.â Ethan cupped my chin with his smooth fingers. âHe wants to possess you, and believe me when I say you'll like every part of that possession â until he leaves you.
âDark Ones always leave, and you'll die.â
âMaybe she's different,â Stephanie said in a quiet voice.
âYou'd be willing to sacrifice another?â Mason roared, slamming his fists onto the table. It split down the middle right in front of me.
Gasping, I slid my chair back and nearly fell out of it.
âHow many times have we said weâd stop testing the prophecy?â
Stephanie looked down at her hands. âItâs the only hope we have.â
âHope,â Alex muttered. âWhat a sad, pathetic little word.â
âWe arenât letting Cassius have her.â Ethanâs green eyes flashed as he released my chin. âWe wonât repeat what happened last time.â
âWhat happened last time?â I asked, knowing Iâd probably regret the answer.
Masonâs entire face crumpled with pain as he let out a howl and ran out of the room.
âShit.â Alex stared after him. âItâs going to take hours to get him to come out of his state now.â
âIâm so sorry.â I held up my hands. âI had no ideaââ
âOf course you donât,â Ethan snapped. âYou know nothing.â
~I am nothing.~
I hung my head.
âBe easy on her,â Stephanie said in a calm voice. âSheâs been brainwashed for quite a while.â
âWill he be okay?â I asked in a small voice. âThe werââ I was about to say werewolf and had to stop myself. âMason? Will he be okay?â
âAfter he runs.â Ethan hung his head. âMaybe if he eats something other than berries and the damn pinecones I keep finding in the upstairs bedroom.â
Stephanieâs lips pressed together in a small smile. âHe finds comfort in the outside.â
âYeah, well, heâs ruining my wood floors,â Ethan grumbled.
âYou live together?â I blurted.
All eyes fell to me. âAll immortals live together in one sense or another.â It was Ethan who kept answering my questions.
âAnd you didnât offend Mason as much as remind him of what should have been⦠what could have been.â
âOh.â I swallowed against the dryness in my throat. Shock must have been wearing off as I could at least feel my body again, though what I felt was shaky and weak.
âEthanâ¦â Stephanie glanced between us. âI know you donât like the idea, but itâs really the only way.â
He chewed his lower lip; fangs descended from the top of his mouth. âI know.â
âItâs the only thing we havenât tried.â Alex put his arm around Stephanie. âIt wonât be so bad, will it?â
What were they talking about?
And why was I suddenly feeling rejected all over again?
âIt wonât be so bad,â Ethan repeated. âIt will be absolute torture⦠hell rising to earth⦠and you ask me to do this still? Knowing what you know?â
The two of them hung their heads but said nothing.
It was on the tip of my tongue to ask when the entire temperature in the room dropped.
I saw my own breath.
âHeâs close.â Alex cursed. âDo it now!â
Ethanâs green eyes met mine; they flashed then went completely black before he said in a low gravelly voice, âIâm so sorry.â
All I felt was pain.
As black overtook everything.
~âI love you so much.â The woman danced in the field, throwing her hands up into the air in excitement. âSay you love me.â~
~âI love you,â Ethan grinned. âAlways, you know this.â~
~âSay it again!â She laughed and threw herself into his arms.~
~I felt everything he felt, like it was me. He wasnât just elated, he was⦠perfect. Life was perfect. The universe was at one with him and his mate.~
~âThe hour grows late,â he whispered against her temple. âShall we go back to the castle?â~
~She pulled away and pouted. Her dark hair fell in loose waves all the way down to her waist. âCatch me first.â~
~âToo easy.â~
~âDo it!â She laughed then took off ridiculously fast.~
~Laughing, Ethan chased her into the forest.~
~It was impossible not to laugh with them, not to experience the love firsthand. It was so beautiful I wanted to weep, but I couldnât feel my face or any part of my body. Maybe I was dead.~
~But at least Iâd seen true love once. It was something Iâd never forgetâthe way he held her, the way their hearts beat the same rhythm.~
~The scene changed.~
~She was in a large bed. The curtains were pulled back from the window, letting in the moonlight.~
~âA daughter.â She held the baby up in her arms and grinned. âEthan, we have a daughter!â~
~Ethanâs face was pure awe as he took the small bundle in his hands and whispered against the babyâs head. âSo perfect.â~
~âShe is.â~
~âWe did it,â Ethan said with tears in his eyes. âI cannot believe after all these yearsââ~
~The temperature in the room dropped.~
~âQuicklyâ¦â Her eyes were fearful. âTake her away from here.â~
~âHe would never harm a child.â Ethan shook his head. âWe can trust him.â~
~âWe canât!â she cried. âYouâve seen what they are capable of.â~
~âLeave it!â he roared. âI will protect us.â~
~The door to the room burst open as Cassius casually walked in, his eyes scanning the room with a cold detachment that caused me to shiver.~
~âSoâ¦â Cassius tilted his head; it looked animalistic. âYou defy me?â~
~âSheâs half human,â Ethan said. âYou know the rules.â~
~âThe rulesâ¦â Cassius grinned. ââ¦and youâve broken them.â~
~âNo.â Ethan shook his head. âThatâs impossible.â~
~The woman in the bed started to cry softly into her hands.~
~âMaybe you should ask your wife where her loyalty lies.â~
~âEthanâ¦â she sobbed. âIâm so sorry! It was the only way! It was the only way!â~
~Realization dawned in Ethanâs eyes as he fell to his knees. âTell me you didnât do this, my love⦠tell me!â~
~No more words were spoken.~
~I felt like my heart was breaking right along with his.~
~Cold green eyes met mine as if he truly knew I was there, in that heaven or hell, in the dream.~
âAwake!â he screamed.
I jolted up from the bed in a cold sweat and confused, who carried me there? Ethan hovered over me, Stephanie rocked in the corner, and Alex paced the floor.
âIt worked.â Alex paused his walking, still not looking at me. âThank God, it worked.â
âOf course it did,â Stephanie agreed; her eyes held such a deep sadness, my heart clenched in my chest. âEthanâ¦â
He shoved away from the bedside and walked out of the room, slamming the door behind him.
âHe wonât hurt you.â Alex gave me a sympathetic smile. âJust⦠give him time.â
âTime?â
Stephanie nodded. âTo get used to the idea.â
âThe idea of what?â
âYouâre his new mate.â Stephanie stood, just as the sound of a man screaming in agony pierced my ears. âWeâll leave you now.â
