Ethan
Not how I expected to start my day or end it.
Cassius was in the room next door to mine.
Genesis still hadnât woken up, but her breathing had evened out. Her heartbeat sounded less erratic. I had faith she was just healingâtaking her time.
âHave you tried kissing her?â Mason said from the doorway.
âWhat?â
âKissing her.â Mason walked into the room, his arms folded, eyes tense. âIn those movies, the prince always kisses the princess.â
âWhat the hell are you talking about?â I growled. âWhat movies?â
âLike the King Lion movie⦠thereâs tons of them.
âI had nothing else to do, so I went out and bought them because they made Genesis happy, and I was losing my mind with worry so I watched a few⦠or maybe⦠seven⦠and the prince always kisses the princess.â
I fought hard for patience as my fangs elongated, wanting to take a bite out of his silly neck. âYou watched cartoons. All day?â
âI made steakâ¦â Mason fidgeted with his hands. ââ¦for when sheâd return. I thought maybe we could share it.â
I glanced back at Genesis. âShe would like that.â
âI figured it would give her something to look forward to.â
âSharing meat with a wolf?â I smirked.
âAnd watching cartoons.â Mason pulled a seat up to the bed. âAnd itâs worth a shot. Maybe kiss her, then tell her about the steak.â
Werewolves.
âAny change with Cassius?â
Mason shook his head. âHis temperature drops for seconds before it skyrockets again. Itâs like he doesnât have enough blood to self-heal.â
âHe gave it all to her.â Tears filled my eyes. âTo save my mate.â
âThere must be something we can do for him,â Mason growled. âHeâs still king. Heâs stillâ¦â
âOur friend. Brother,â I finished. âWatch her for me? I need to find Stephanie.â
Masonâs face was impassive, but I could hear his heart pick up speed. âSo, youâll risk breaking her heart by telling her the truth?â
âYes.â I licked my lips.
âGood luck.â Mason shook his head. âI think Iâll stay here and talk to Genesis about steak.â
I smiledâ the first time in a few hoursâ and patted him on the back. âDonât leave out any juicy details, wolf.â
âWouldnât dream of it,â he growled then leaned over the bed and grabbed Genesisâs hand.
âListen, human, if you donât wake up soon, Iâm going to eat all the meat, and we both know what that would do to my digestive system at this point.â
I let out a chuckle and moved down the hallway, my ears sensitive to all the heartbeats in the house.
Cassius was weak, so weak. Iâd never heard his heart flutter that way.
Another strong heartbeat joined the mix.
Picking up speed.
I waited as Stephanie reached the top of the stairs. Her hair was piled in a knot on her head, her blue eyes still blurred with tears.
âRemove it,â I whispered.
Alex could hear my thoughtsâcould hear me in the house. Heâd just walked in the door when Iâd uttered the command. He cursed a blue streak.
âI saidâ¦â My voice edged with venom. âRemove it.â
Alexâs tortured heart slowed, and then the house trembled as Stephanieâs hair went from light to dark, her lips from cherry to pale, her eyesâwhite.
She stumbled back and felt her face.
It would feel different, smoother, stronger.
Her hands shook in front of her. âWhat did you just do?â
âWe need to talk.â I held out my hand. âTrust me?â
She gulped, her white eyes blinking in confusion. âI feel different.â
âBecause you are.â
âI donât understand.â
âBut you want to?â
She nodded.
âTake my hand.â
The minute her fingers touched mine, she gasped. Weâd always felt warm to one another, but the minute her skin came into contact with mine, frost formed across her fingertips.
âButââ
âLetâs go visit Cassius. He may be sleeping right now, but I believe heâd want to be in the room.â
âHe hates me.â
âNo,â I sighed. âThatâs where youâre wrong.â
âDark Ones do not love,â she whispered. âI know that now.â
I tilted my head and smiled sadly. âDonât they?â
